Purpose : The present study aimed to investigate the of the based on their oral health status and the study findings will provide the basic data for establishing future oral health related policies for the elderly. Methods : A total of 50 elderly participants were selected for the study. Oral examinations were performed by a single trained dental hygienist, the oral health status was classified according to the use of dentures, presence of temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) noise, presence of TMJ pain, presence of trismus, presence of preferred chewing, and number of residual teeth. An oral health-related survey using the in-person interview method was conducted by two dental hygienists and 30 types of foods were selected for the assessment of chewing ability. For data analysis, the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's Rho analysis were performed to investigate the association between oral health status and chewing ability. Result : The results of the present study revealed that there was a statistically significant positive (+) correlation between the number of residual teeth and chewing abilities. In other words, as the number of residual teeth increased, chewing ability increased as well, with the differences being statistically significant. Conclusion : Improvement of oral health in the elderly is a fundamental aspect of healthy aging. Therefore, the implementation of more efficient oral health care policies for the elderly is required as We move toward a super-aged society.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an oral health promotion program. And suggest that education on oral health should be given by a professional. Methods : Sixty-four people over the age of 65 years were selected from three elderly care facility located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, A city. From June 7 to August 19, 2016, an oral health promotion program was given to two experimental groups (N=21 and 20) for a total of eight times. One program was conducted by a professional and the other by a non-professional although both were considered experts. Additionally, a control group(N=23) was a observed. Results : While both experimental groups showed a positive change from the oral health promotion program, the experimental group that was given the oral health promotion program by a professional showed more positive changes in oral cavity function. Conclusions : By using professionals, it is possible to provide a health promotion program that actively monitors the oral cavity of the elderly as well as provide elderly care services for oral hygiene. Appropriate elderly health policies and oral health business model for elderly are needed.
Objectives: This study aimed to validate the moderating effect of oral health on the relationship between perceived health status and health-related quality of life in the elderly and to use this information as primary data to suggest oral health policies for the aged society. Methods: This study included 3,707 subjects aged over 65 years who answered all the variables used in the study model and completed the health questionnaire and screening survey based on the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Baron & Kenny's linear regression analysis using SPSS 22.0 and SPSS Macro Version 3.1 programs was performed to confirm the moderating effect of the number of remaining natural teeth, chewing difficulty, and cardiovascular disease on the relationship between perceived health status and healthrelated quality of life in the elderly. Results: The number of remaining natural teeth, chewing difficulties, and cardiovascular diseases affected the perceived health status of the elderly. As the number of remaining natural teeth increased, the effect of perceived health status on the quality of life in the elderly was buffered. The effect of perceived health status on the quality of life increased with chewing difficulties and the number of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it was confirmed that chewing difficulties, rather than the number of cardiovascular diseases. had a greater effect on the quality of life in the elderly. Conclusions: Oral health policies and projects are required to ensure oral rehabilitation with dentures and implants and restore chewing function to improve the quality of life of the elderly in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to provide the data for discussion related to oral health promotion policies for the elderly by examining and analyzing the prosthesis conditions and necessity for the fixed and removable dentures among the Korean elderly. The data, obtained from 4,557 elderly aged at 65 or higher who were targeted for the 5th National Health Nutrition Survey, were analyzed through the complex sample frequency analysis, complex sample cross analysis, and complex sample logistic regression analysis. The results of analysis showed significant relevance of whole denture implant and the necessity thereof in older subjects, rural community, and subjects with lower education background, regarding the state of upper jaw/lower jaw prosthesis and the necessity for upper jaw/lower jaw fixed partial denture/whole denture. In addition, the necessity for prosthesis implant was found to have correlation with the income and subjective health condition, while the necessity for artificial teeth(denture) was found to have correlation with the gender, age, education, and subjective oral health condition. Therefore, it is considered necessary to map out the prevention and treatment policies designed to help maintain and promote oral health based on oral health education, along with the policies that aim to recover the neutralized oral health functions, in relation to the oral health of the elderly.
Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the rates of perceived stress of elderly people over 65 years old and to confirm the influence of stress on general health and oral health status. Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey for 2014, 1,472 people over 65 years of age were selected as final subjects. Stress was used as an independent variable and dependent variables were included physical health (perceived health status), mental health (depression), and oral health (perceived oral health status). The following confounding variables were adjusted for the current study: demographic characteristics (gender, age, education level, house income) and health - related characteristics (drinking, smoking, exercise, frequency of tooth brushing, using oral care product, dental exam, comorbidity, restrict activity). Complex sampling analysis was applied and logistic regression was performed to determine the effects of stress on physical health, mental health and oral health status. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% Confidence Interval, 95% CI) were calculated. Results: Logistic regression indicated that stress was significantly associated with low physical health (OR=2.18, 95%CI: 1.49-3.20), low mental health (OR=8.68, 95%CI: 4.98-15.11), low oral health (OR=1.53, 95%CI: 1.06-2.21) after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusions: The perceived stress of the elderly was found to be related to the general health and oral health status. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate stress as a predictor of health risk for the health promotion of the elderly on multidisciplinary assessment and continuous evaluation. In addition, health support policies should be provided to achieve good health status for elderly.
This study is to observe the effect of oral health of elderly on overall health status and social activity to provide basic data for oral health improvement program for the elderly and development of related policies. The survey was conducted from July 25th to July 29th, 2011, and used 145 copies for this research analysis. As a result of correlation analysis, it is observed that all of 4 sub factors of Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index have significant static correlation with overall health status of elderly and social activity also has significant static correlation with oral health. As a result of regression analysis, the functional limitation out of sub factors showed significant positive effect on health status and psychological effect has significant positive effect on social activity. Based on the above result, it is observed that, at the time of rapidly entering to an aging society, the life quality related to oral health of elderly which is part of overall health and overall health status and social activity areas that are recognized by the elderly have significant correlation. And, it is important to understand the factors of oral health affecting health status and social activity. Based on the result of this study, more researches on the development of oral health program and development of assessment tool that can be easily employed should be made.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oral care behavior, oral health care self-efficacy, and social support on the subjective oral health level of the elderly. The data survey was conducted from September 17, 2019 to November 22, 2019 for the elderly living in Daejeon Metropolitan City and parts of Chungcheongnam-do, and the collected data were analyzed by 𝑥2-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis. As a result of the survey, subjective oral health level increased by 3.242 times when dentures were not used and 2.339 times when the number of brushings per day was 3 or more times. In addition, as the oral health care self-efficacy and social support increased 1.755 times and 1.192 times, respectively, the subjective oral health level also increased. Based on the above results, in order to improve the subjective oral health level of the elderly, opportunities for oral health education such as denture care methods and toothbrushing lessons should be expanded. In addition, there is a need to prepare policies to reinforce oral health care self-efficacy and social support.
This study was conducted to identify the oral health status and management behavior and dental use behavior according to the level of education and income of the elderly, and to present the supporting data to prepare policies and systems for the promotion of elderly oral health. The data survey was conducted on 224 elderly people living in the Daejeon area from August 19, 2019 to October 25, 2019, and the collected data were analyzed by chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. As a result, oral health status and management behavior showed significant differences according to education and income level in denture use, implant use, oral hygiene product use, oral health education experience, and oral health management method. There was a significant difference in dental use behavior according to education and income level, and age, education level, implant use, and the main reasons for dental use were found to be factors affecting dental use. Therefore, it is expected that the quality of life of the elderly's oral health can be improved by preparing an institutional plan at the national that considers education and income level based on this study.

This study is conducted on 1,725 elderly people over 65 years of age using 2018 data obtained from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) data. In this study, an analysis is performed considering the general characteristics of the elderly and their oral health status (authoring discomfort, speech problems, etc.) to confirm the relationship between the elderly's unmet dental experience and depressive experience. The results of this study showed that depressive experiences by the elderly resulted in unmet dental medical experiences, and it was also found that the income level and the complaint of chewing discomfort had an effect. Based on these results, it is believed that oral health policies should be developed to improve the unmet dental medical experience by considering the socio-economic level of the elderly and depressive experiences. This policy development is expected to lead not only to the improvement of oral health for the elderly, but also to improve the quality of life for the elderly through health promotion.

The purpose of this study was to identify chronic diseases and oral health care behaviors in 65-year-old individuals and to determine the factors that influence masticatory mobility. The raw data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2020 were utilized to analyze factors associated with chewing discomfort in 1,278 elderly Koreans. Using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0, we conducted complex sample cross-analysis to examine the difference in chewing discomfort based on general characteristics, chronic diseases, and oral health care behaviors. Additionally, we performed complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with chewing discomfort. As a factor influencing chewing discomfort, unmet dental care was 3.33 times higher (p<0.001), and subjective oral health was 0.18 times more likely to be moderate (p<0.001) and 0.48 times more likely to be good (p<0.001) lower. In the case of arthritis, the level of chewing discomfort was high (OR=1.08, p=0.694), but there was no significant difference. As a result of the aforementioned factors, it is believed that there is a need for policies and systems to provide dental care to the elderly before their oral health deteriorates. Additionally, tailored oral health promotion programs should be implemented.
