  • This study examines the relationship between recuperation nurses' oral health knowledge and perceptions and senile denture management behavior. For this study, 198 recuperation nurses who work in recuperation facilities for elderly patients in Andong City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, are surveyed. The data are investigated statistically using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analyses, and logistics regression analyses. The analyses results demonstrate that the rate of correct answers for oral health knowledge of recuperation nurses is 76.5%. The relationship between oral health perceptions and oral health knowledge is 0.324, which is slightly high correlation(p<0.01). In addition, the potential of senile denture management behavior is more likely among nurses who have high levels of oral health knowledge and perceptions. Therefore, it is necessary to explore measures that can promote denture management and oral health for the elderly who enter recuperation facilities through helping raise the level of recuperation nurses' oral health knowledge and perceptions.

We analyzed the data with descriptive statistics analysis, chi-squared analysis and logistic regression analysis by using SPSS 23.0. Results: The response rate to the questionnaire was 92%. Oral health management provided by caregivers to inpatients in the elderly was prevention of oral diseases(92.8%), tooth brushing (89.5%), use of oral care products(68.4%), denture cleaning(90.8%) and oral cleaning(90.8%). Frequency analysis of oral health management in accordance with the educational needs of caregivers was all confirmed statistically significant(p<0.05). In the logistics regression model, oral health knowledge was significantly associated with low oral cleaning(OR=1.58) and oral health attitude was significantly associated with high denture cleaning(OR=1.29) and oral cleaning(OR=1.28) after adjustment for other covariates including gender, age, certification, education level, ward, working years. Conclusions: It is necessary to expand the scope and improve the quality of education that can change the attitudes and behaviors of the caregivers on the oral health management of the elderly on the basis of the current oral health education.

Among the kinds of parents' oral health management behavior towards their children, guidance for tooth brushing and guidance for oral care influenced their children's O'leary index. When they received a higher score in guidance for tooth brushing and guidance for oral care, their children's O'leary index became lower. Conclusions: This study has found that parents' dietary guidance provided to children influences their dt index, and O'leary index, one of the major causes of dental caries, is influenced by parents' guidance for tooth-brushing and guidance for oral care. Therefore, we should realize that according to the degree of parents' interest in children's oral care, children's state of oral health can be changed, and parents should acquire proper knowledge about oral health and instruct and train their children desirably.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between oral health professionals' knowledge, attitude, and practice with regard to infectious waste management and to identify related factors influencing it. Methods: The study comprised of 219 oral health professionals from select dental clinics and public health centers recruited between August 25, 2016 and September 5, 2016, who agreed to participate in the study with full understanding of the study objectives. A self-reported questionnaire was administered, which consisted of 22 items on knowledge of infectious waste management, 9 items on attitude, and 16 items on practice. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses. Results: The age, knowledge, and clinical attitude of oral health professionals significantly correlated with waste management practice. Specifically, infectious waste management practice improved with increasing age, a greater level of knowledge, and a more positive clinical attitude. Additionally, the standardized regression coefficient demonstrated that, of these three factors, clinical attitude more strongly correlated with effective waste management practice, followed by age and level of knowledge. Conclusions: These results indicated that oral health professionals had a low level of knowledge regarding infectious waste management, and a more positive clinical attitude resulted in better practices. Therefore, the development of detailed and active education guidelines and strategies are needed to enhance the attitude, knowledge, and practice of oral health professionals with regard to infectious waste management.

Methods: This study used 922 senior citizens over 65 from the data (2015) of the 6th National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS). The regression analysis was adopted to identify factors affecting their oral health status which has effect on their oral health quality of life. The statistical package SPSS 21.0 was employed. Frequency analysis, chi-squared analysis and regression analysis were used, and the significance level or Cronbach's alpha value was 0.05. Results: Depending on income levels, there were differences in their oral health status as to whether they use oral hygiene products, take dental examinations, join private health-insurances, and delay dental treatments or not. And educational levels also made significant differences in their oral health status as to whether they smoke, drink alcohol, how many times they brush teeth a day, whether they use oral hygiene products, take dental treatments, and join private health-insurances. Regression analysis on the relationship between their oral health status and the oral health quality of life showed that there were significant differences depending on whether they take dental treatments, delay dental medical treatments, smoke, take oral examinations, how many times they brush teeth a day, and whether they use oral hygiene products, or join private health-insurances. Conclusions: The study shows that a comprehensive plan is needed to raise attention on proper oral health-care and ultimately to improve the quality of life by considering the daily number of tooth brushing, oral hygiene product use, regular dental treatments, and other medical uses.
