  • This study investigates optimum designs of steel space truss towers under seismic loading by using Jaya optimization algorithm. Turkish Earthquake Code (2007) specifications are applied on optimum designs of steel space truss towers under the seismic loading for different local site classes depending on different soil groups. The proposed novel algorithm does not have any algorithm-specific control parameters and depends only a simple revision equation. Therefore, it provides a practical solution for structural optimization problems. Optimum solutions of the different steel truss examples are carried out by selecting suitable W sections taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). In order to obtain optimum solutions, a computer program is coded in MATLAB in corporated with SAP2000-OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface). The stress and displacement constraints are applied on the design problems according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) specifications. Firstly, a benchmark truss problem is examined to see the efficiency of Jaya optimization algorithm. Then, two different multi-element truss towers previously solved with other methods without seismic loading in literature are designed by the proposed algorithm. The first space tower is a 582-member space truss with the height of 80 m and the second space tower is a 942-member space truss of about 95 m height. The minimum optimum designs obtained with this novel algorithm for the case without seismic loading are lighter than the ones previously attained in the literature studies. The results obtained in the study show that Jaya algorithm is a practical and robust optimization method for structural optimization problems. Moreover, incorporation of the seismic loading causes significant increase in the minimum design weight.

  • This study presents Mine Green Framework(M.G.F) which can protect the slope of rock and tailings. M.G.F method provides the fiber frame which helps the growth of the plant in the barren site like mined rock slope. M.G.F system consists of the polyester fiber mat, soil, seeds and anchors for the attachment. The optimum rate of filling materials was figured out by many germination tests in order to improve the effect of filling materials and the optimum rate of filling materials was applied in four test sites individually. High rooting rate over 70% was confirmed in all field tests. Especially the moisturizer was the most important component of filling materials and it could make the better condition for the plants.

  • PURPOSES : The permeable pavement type has been rapidly developed for solving problems regarding traffic noise in the area of housing complex and heavy rainwater drainage in order to account for the climate change. In this regards, the objective of this study is to figure out the characteristics of pavement types. METHODS : The laboratory test for deriving optimum asphalt content (OAC) was conducted using the mixtures of the permeable asphalt surface for the pavement surface from Marshall compaction method. Based on its results, the pavement construction at the test field was conducted. After that, the site performance tests for measuring the traffic noise, strength and permeability were carried out for the relative evaluation in 2 months after the traffic opening. The specific site tests are noble close proximity method (NCPX), Light falling deflectometer test (LFWD) and the compact permeability test. RESULTS : The ordered highest values of the traffic noise level can be found such as normal dense graded asphalt, drainage and porous structure types. In the results from LFWD, the strength values of the porous and drainage asphalt types had been lower, but the strength of normal asphalt structure had relatively stayed high. CONCLUSIONS :The porous structure has been shown to perform significantly better in permeability and noise reduction than others. In addition to this study, the evaluation of the properties and the determination of the optimum thickness for the subgrade course under the porous pavement will be conducted using ground investigation technique in the further research.

  • Deposition behavior of hard amorphous carbon film was investigated by molecular dynamic simulation using Tersoff potential which was suggested for the interaction potential between carbon atoms. When high energy carbon atoms were collided on diamond (100) surface, dense amorphous carbon film could be obtained. Physical properties of the simulated carbon film were compared with those of the film deposited by filtered cathodic arc process. As in the experimental result, the most diamond-like film was obtained at an optimum kinetic energy of the incident carbon atoms. The optimum kinetic energy was 50 eV, which is comparable to the experimental observation. The simulated film was amorphous with short range order of diamond lattice. At the optimum kinetic energy condition, we found that significant amount of carbon atom were placed at a metastable site of distance 2.1 $\AA$. By melting and quenching simulation of diamond lattice, it was shown that this metastatic peak is Proportional to the quenching rate. These results show that the hard and dense diamond-like film could be obtained when the localized thermal spike due to the collision of high energy carbon atom can be effectively dissipated to the lattice.

  • We were to investigate the geomorphological environment of optimum location in the object of Bronze Age's dwelling site (hereinafter called dwelling site) of total of 205 units confirmed in the 'Cheonan Baekseokdong Relic Group' distributed in hill of the uppermost stream part in the watershed of Jangjae stream in Cheonan, Chungnam Province. To do this, we classified the hill of the object of investigation where dwelling sites were distributed as 8 units of slope micro-landforms and again by combining them with the grade of gradient of 5 units subdivided them into ultra-micro-landforms of total 40 units. On the foundation of this, in the viewpoints of 'gradients of each of micro-landforms' analyzed the 'number of dwelling sites' and 'dwelling site distribution density (measure: number of dwelling sites/1000m2) of 'Cheonan Baekseokdong Relic Group'. As the result, the optimum landform environment where the dwelling sites were located were found to be largely 5 units of ultra-micro-landforms - ① flat land of crest flat, ② gentle slope land of crest flat, ③ flat land of crest slope, ④ gentle slope land of crest slope and ⑤ semi-gentle slope land of crest slope. This analyzed material will be used from now on as basic material which can predict the distribution of dwelling sites of Bronze Age men who dwelled in the watershed of Jangjae stream.

  • Earthquake disaster is dependent upon both site intensity and strength of structures. The higher the strength, structures become more safe, which in turn increases the construction cost. Therefore, it is necessary to decide an optimum design intensity in which the safety is balanced with the cost. Such an optimum design intensity for major man-made structures in Korea is determined in the present study from a simulation model as follows. 1) Hypothetical earthquake time series are generated from the probability distribution to represent appropriately the seismicity of Korea. 2) The strength of structures constructed with a certain design intensity is assumed to exponentially decrease with the elapsed time. The construction cost is also expressed as a function of design intensity. 3) Comparing the seismic intensity generated from the earthquake time series with the strength of structures, the safety of structures is examined. Then the time until the structure is damaged by an earthquake is obtained within the designed life time. 4) The above simulation is iterated several hundred times and hence the mean life time of structures having a certain design intensity is obtained. 5) After all, the optimum design intensity to minimize the annual mean loss, the ratio of construction cost to mean life time, is estimated. The major conclusions obtained from the above simulation model are as follows. 1) Depending upon the designed life time ($T_p$), the optimum design intensities are appeared to be 0. 05-0. 10g for $T_p=50yr$ and 0. 08-0.13g for $T_p=100yr$. 2) According to the sensitivity analysis, the optimum design intensity increases with the rapid strength decrease of structure and decreases with the increase of initial construction cost.

  • Jungmun beach was confirmed only one beach as a nesting place of seaturtles in Jeju of South Korea. We investigated the environment conditions for nesting of seaturtles (sites 1, 2) to target as the spawning grounds of accidental nesting place. Sand temperatures of beaches at 5 cm above and 10, 30 and 50 cm below the surface of beach were measured at intervals of approximately 10 days during June to December. These data indicated that the optimum (over $25^{\circ}C$) sand temperature for spawning and hatching of seaturtles in the sites 1 and 2 from June 23 to September 29, 2008 and from June 23 to October 17, 2008, respectively. Also, maintained the optimum coastal water temperature (above $20^{\circ}C$) for seaturtles maintained from June 23 to November 17, 2008. Therefore, Jungmun beach could be the possible spawning grounds of accidental nesting place, where the landed seaturtles and hatched young seaturtles could be survived successfully.

  • For the optimum design of pile foundations, the determination of allowable load should take both the material strength and the geotechnical characteristics of the site into consideration. Through survey of previous construction records in Korea, it was found that most of the design is overconservative and in some cases the design load was higher than the constructed quality. Proper analysis making use of WEAP and monitoring of pile driving by PDA have been proved to solve most of the prevailing problems. In addition, the time effect in the evaluation of pile bearing capacity has the must significant effect and should not be ignored in the pile design.

  • The structure of Chosun-ilbo Boopyung factory was desined as exposed concrete. The self compacting concrete(non-vibrating concrete) must be applied to this case because the exposed concrete wall is very thin(200mm) and high(6m), Laboratory tests and semi mock-up test were performed for optimum mix design of the self compacting concrete. As a result, the optimum mixes were observed at the 3-component types(ope, fly-ash, slag powder) that Vp$\geq$0.175, Vw/Vp$\geq$0.95, W=170~175$kgf/m^3$ and B=500~540$kgf/m^3$ Based on this result. we make plan that the pilot productions of batcher plant, the full-scale mock up tests and site application.

  • It is proposed in this paper to develop the rational mix design system of High-strength concrete which is adjusted in the domestic circumstances. 1) Collect a lots of data in order to introduce the optimum mix design which has relation among material variables which compose High-strength concrete and run by using SAS (Statistical analysis system) which is one of multivariate statistical analysis method. 2) Select the important material variables for mix design of High-strength concrete by major component analysis and propose the standard range of each material variable along the target strengths. From the results of this study, it was proposed the range of proper material variables in domestic circumstance, which are W/C, S/A, air and admixture amounts, etc, at the target strengths for concrete kind. Also it was developed the optimum mix design program of High-strength concrete according to target strength and size of aggregate and made mix design ease in domestic construction site.
