  • Numerical procedure of design optimality evaluation is studied for caisson structural systems. Two kinds of evaluation methods can be considered; mathematical optimality criteria method (MOCM) and numerical optimization method (NOM). The choice of the method depends on the available information of the system MOCM can be used only when the information of all function values, gradients and Lagrange multipliers is available, which may not be realistic in practice. Therefore, in this study, NOMs are applied for the structural optimality evaluation, where only design variables are necessary. To this end, Metropolis genetic algorithm (MGA) is advantageously used and applied for a standard optimization model of caisson composite breakwater. In the numerical example, cost and constraint functions are assumed to be changed from the orignal design situation and their effects are evaluated for optimality. From the theoretical consideration and numerical experience, it is found that the proposed optimality evaluation procedure with MGA-based NOM is efficient and practically applicable.

  • This paper gives conditions under which necessary optimality conditions in a locally Lipschitz program can be expressed as the invexity of the active constraint functions or the type I invexity of the objective function and the constraint functions on the feasible set of the program. The results are nonsmooth extensions of those of Hanson and Mond obtained earlier in differentiable case.

  • Parameter identification problem of a three species (predator, mutualist-prey, and mutualist) ecological system with reaction-diffusion phenomenon is investigated in this paper. The mathematical model of the parameter identification problem is constructed and continuous dependence of the solution for the direct problem on the parameters identified is obtained. Finally, the existence of optimal solution and an optimality necessary condition for the parameter identification problem are given.

  • We are concerned with an optimal control problem governed by a Poisson equation in which body force acts like a control parameter. The cost functional to be optimized is taken to represent the error from the desired observation and the cost due to the control. We recast the problem into the mixed formulation to take advantage of the minimax principle for the duality method. The existence of a saddle point for the Lagrangian shall be shown and the optimality system will be derived therein. Finally, to attain an optimal control, we combine the optimality system with an operational technique. By achieving the gradient of the cost functional, a convergent algorithm based on the projected gradient method is established.

  • In this paper, we have formulated optimum Accelerated Life Test (ALT) plan for a parallel system with two independent components using masked data with ramp-stress loading scheme and Type-I censoring. Consider a system of two independent and non-identical components connected in parallel. Such a system fails whenever all of its components has failed. The exact component that causes the system to fail is often unknown due to cost and time constraint. For each parallel system at test, we observe its system's failure time and a set of component that includes the component actually causing the system to fail. The stress-life relationship is modelled using inverse power law, and cumulative exposure model is assumed to model the effect of changing stress. The optimal plan consists in finding out the optimum stress rate using D-optimality criterion. The method developed has been explained using a numerical example and sensitivity analysis carried out.

  • First-order least-squares method of a distributed optimal control problem for the incompressible Stokes equations is considered. An optimality system for the optimal solution are reformulated to the equivalent first-order system by introducing the vorticity and then the least-squares functional corresponding to the system is defined in terms of the sum of the squared $H^{-1}$ and $L^2$ norms of the residual equations of the system. Finite element approximations are studied and optimal error estimates are obtained. Resulting linear system of the optimality system is symmetric and positive definite. The V-cycle multigrid method is applied to the system to test computational efficiency.

  • We study a boundary optimal control problem of the fluid flow governed by the Navier-Stokes equations. the control problem is formulated with the flow through a channel with steps. The first-order optimality condition of the optimal control is derived. Finite element approximations of the solutions of the optimality system are defined and optimal error estimates are derived. finally, we present some numerical results.

  • We have investigated optimal control strategies for prevention of ecstasy use. Ecstasy use has continued at raves and nightclubs in recent years and the reduction of ecstasy use has become one of the important issues in society. We apply optimal control theory to a model of the peer-driven dynamics of ecstasy use. Our goal is to minimize the ecstasy use class and the intervention cost. Optimal control is characterized in terms of the solution of optimality system, which is the state system coupled with the adjoint system and the optimality equations. The numerical simulations show the optimal prevention policies of ecstasy use in various scenarios.

  • IS changeback is regarded as an offective way to control the usage of computers and communication systems which are very much limited resources and whose costs are very high, In this paper, the problem of combining the optimal chargeback system which guarantees the efficiency with the Rawls'(1971) concept of fairness. Primary conclusion of this paper is that if the value function which represents the contributions of IS user to the firm's profit is evidit and there is no uncertainty about this contribution information, optimality can be achived without any loss of fairness using full cost allocation pricing. But if there is no significant differences among contribution of each user and there is no significant differences among users because of the managerial arbitrariness, From this point of view contingent chargeback system with which manager can find the golden middle between optimality and fairness by adjusting the 'efficiency coefficient' according to his/her organizational characterisics and environments is proposed. A heuristic of finding the appropriate efficiency coefficient is also suggested.
