Effect of Dimension in Optimal Dimension Reduction Estimation for Conditional Mean Multivariate Regression (다변량회귀 조건부 평균모형에 대한 최적 차원축소 방법에서 차원수가 결과에 미치는 영향)

  • Yoo and Cook (2007) developed an optimal sufficient dimension reduction methodology for the conditional mean in multivariate regression and it is known that their method is asymptotically optimal and its test statistic has a chi-squared distribution asymptotically under the null hypothesis. To check the effect of dimension used in estimation on regression coefficients and the explanatory power of the conditional mean model in multivariate regression, we applied their method to several simulated data sets with various dimensions. A small simulation study showed that it is quite helpful to search for an appropriate dimension for a given data set if we use the asymptotic test for the dimension as well as results from the estimation with several dimensions simultaneously.

  • To execute load curtailment efficiently for Urban Railway Load, the load patterns of the Urban Railway Load and available amount of load curtailment over the Urban Railway Load are analyzed through comparing the load to the common power loads. In addition, the current policies of the load curtailment for the Urban Railway Load are investigated and the problems of those are presented. Based on the researches, the optimal load curtailment strategies for the Urban Railway Load are proposed to minimize the consumer's utility diminishment and the costs of the use of energies. Finally, the optimal load curtailment strategies are applied to the real Urban Railway Load, the results shows that proposed methods are efficient and cost effective while the amount of load curtailment is minimized.

  • Car navigation system which is killer application fuses map management techniques into CPS techniques. Even if the existing navigation systems are designed for the shortest path, they are not able to cope efficiently with the change of the traffic flow and the bottleneck point of road. Therefore, it is necessary to find out shortest path algorithm based on time instead of distance which takes traffic information into consideration. In this paper, we propose a optimal path search algorithm based on the traffic information. More precisely. we introduce the system architecture for finding out optimal paths, and the limitations of the existing shortest path search algorithm are also analyzed. And then, we propose a new algorithm for finding out optimal path to make good use of the orientation of the collected traffic information.

  • A simulation program is developed for the optimal design of small scale district heating and cooling system. Main features for the simulation program are the reliability and the easiness for the optimal design of the DHC(District Heating and Cooling) systems. In order for implementing those features, the operational characteristics according to the prime movers is modeled based on the materials of efficiency as a function of operational load. The unit energy load model is also developed extensively for several building types, of which the corresponding district consist, such as apartment complex, hotel, hospital, buildings for business and commercial use respectively. The specific features and the overall procedure of the simulation are described in brief in this paper. The results of the simulation for several test cases will be presented in subsequent study.

  • According to the increasing demands of supercomputer, an exclusive supercomputer building is requested to install a supercomputer for promoting high-end R&D as well as creating the public service infrastructure in the national level. KISTI, as a public supercomputer center with the 4th supercomputer (capacity of 360Tflops), is experiencing shortage of infrastructure systems, caused by increased capacity. Thus, it is anticipated that the situation will be growing serious when the 5th and 6th supercomputers will be installed. On this study, analyzed on the 5th supercomputer system through projecting performance level and optimal operating environments by assessing infra-capacity. Explored way to construct optimal operating environments through infrastructure-capacity analysis of supercomputer center. This study can be of use for reviewing KISTI's conditions as the only supercomputer center in Korea. In addition, it provides reference data for planning the new exclusive supercomputer center in terms of feasibility, while analyzing infrastructure systems.

  • A new algorithm is suggested to solve the optimal reactive power control(optimal VAR control) problem. An efficient computer program based on the latest achievements in the sparse matrix/vector techniques has been developed for this purpose. The model minimizes the real power losses in the system. The constraints include the reactive power limits of the generators, limits on the bus voltages and the operating limits of control variables- the transformer tap positions, generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The method developed herein employs linearized sensitivity relationships of power systems to establish both the objective function for minimizing the system losses and the system performance sensitivities relating dependent and control variables. The algorithm consists of two modules, i.e. the Q-V module for reactive power-voltage control, Load flow module for computational error adjustments. In particular, the acceleration factor technique is introduced to enhance the convergence property in Q-module, The combined use of the afore-mentioned two modules ensures more effective and efficient solutions for optimal reactive power dispatch problems. Results of the application of the method to the sample system and other worst-case system demonstrated that the algorithm suggested herein is compared favourably with conventional ones in terms of computation accuracy and convergence characteristics.

  • Optimal sensor placement (OSP) is an integral component in the design of an effective structural health monitoring (SHM) system. This paper describes the implementation of a novel collaborative-climb monkey algorithm (CMA), which combines the artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) with the monkey algorithm (MA), as a strategy for the optimal placement of a predefined number of sensors. Different from the original MA, the dual-structure coding method is adopted for the representation of design variables. The collaborative-climb process that can make the full use of the monkeys' experiences to guide the movement is proposed and incorporated in the CMA to speed up the search efficiency of the algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by a numerical example with a high-rise structure. The results show that the proposed CMA algorithm can provide a robust design for sensor networks, which exhibits superior convergence characteristics when compared to the original MA using the dual-structure coding method.

  • In order to achieve stable and efficient use of energy at iron and steel works, a model for the prediction of supply and demand of electric power system is developed on the basis of the information on operation and particular patterns of electric power consumption. The optimal amount of electric power to be purchased and the optimal fuel allocation for the in-house electric power plants are also obtained by a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP) and a nonlinear programming (NLP) solutions, respectively. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed model are investigated by several illustrative examples. The simulation results show the satisfactory energy saving by the optimal solution obtained through this research.

  • The use of a demand response controller is necessary for electric devices to effectively respond to time varying price signals and to achieve the benefits of cost reduction. This paper describes a new formulation with the form of constrained optimization for designing an optimal demand response controller. It is demonstrated that constrained optimization is a better approach for the demand response controller, in terms of the ambiguity of device operation and the practicality of implementation of the optimal control law. This paper also proposes a design scheme to construct a demand response controller that is useful when a system controller is already adapted or optimized for the system. The design separates the demand response function from the original system control function while leaving the system control law unchanged. The proposed formulation is simulated and compared to the system with simple dynamics. The effects of the constraints, the system characteristics and the electricity price are examined further.

  • In this paper, we introduce a seamlessly integrated CAD-based design system (DS) for CAD modeling, engineering analysis, and optimal design which has been developed in CCED at KAIST, The key points of this integrating philosophy are to make full use of a parametric CAD program as the platform of integration and to adopt finite difference method for design sensitivity analysis in optimization process to get robustness and versatility. Design variables are directly selected by clicking CAD model parameters and all the analysis and design activities are menu-driven. This integrated program, named as DS/FDM, runs on Windows NT or Unix and FE analyses are performed at a remote Unix-workstation for multiple users. Application examples include shape optimal design of a belt clip that fits onto a portable electronic device and a bracket to show performance of DS/FDM with shell and tetra solid elements. This software is found efficient and effective fur shape design and size design of engineering structures.
