  • In this paper we conduct comparative statics for optimal consumption and portfolio selection of an agent who has a utility function of Epstein and Zin type. We derive the Slutsky equations and decompose the total effects of changes into the substitution effects and the income effects. We identify the role of the elasticity of intertemporal substitution and the coefficient of relative risk aversion.

  • In this paper, various replacement policies for the general failure model are considered. There are two types of failure in the general failure model. One is Type I failure (minor failure) which can be removed by a minimal repair and the other is Type II failure (catastrophic failure) which can be removed only by a complete repair. In this model, when the unit fails at its age t, Type I failure occurs with probability 1-p(t) and Type II failure occurs with probability p(t), $0{\leq}p(t){\leq}1$. Under the model, optimal replacement policies for the long-run average cost rate and the limiting efficiency are considered. Also taking the cost and the efficiency into consideration at the same time, the properties of the optimal policies under the Cost-Priority-Criterion and the Efficiency-Priority-Criterion are obtained.

  • Designs for discriminating between two linear regression models are studied under $\Lambda$-type optimalities maximizing the measure for the lack of fit for the designs with fixed model inadequacy. The problem of selecting an appropriate $\Lambda$-type optimalities is shown to be closely related to the estimation method. $\Lambda$-type optimalities for the least squares and minimum bias estimation methods are considered. The minimum bias designs are suggested for the designs invariant with respect to the two estimation methods. First order minimum bias designs optimal under $\Lambda$-type optimalities are then derived. Finally for the case where the lack of fit test is significant, an approach to the construction of a second order design accommodating the optimal first order minimum bias design is illustrated.

  • This paper proposes a method for generating a basis translation matrix between isomorphic extension fields. To generate a basis translation matrix, we need the equality correspondence of a basis between the isomorphic extension fields. Consider an extension field $F_{p^m}$ where p is characteristic. As a brute force method, when $p^m$ is small, we can check the equality correspondence by using the minimal polynomial of a basis element; however, when $p^m$ is large, it becomes too difficult. The proposed methods are based on the fact that Type I and Type II optimal normal bases (ONBs) can be easily identified in each isomorphic extension field. The proposed methods efficiently use Type I and Type II ONBs and can generate a pair of basis translation matrices within 15 ms on Pentium 4 (3.6 GHz) when $mlog_2p$ = 160.

  • To store hydrogen with high pressure is one of key technologies in developing FCVs (fuel cell vehicles). Especially, metal lined composite structure, which is called Type 3, is expected to effectively stand highly pressurized hydrogen since it has high specific strength and stiffness as well as excellent storage ability. However, it has many difficulties to design Type 3 vessels because of their complex geometry, fabrication process variables, etc. In this study, therefore, optimal design of Type 3 vessels was performed in consideration of such actual circumstances using genetic algorithm. Additionally, detailed finite element analysis was followed for the optimal result.

  • In this paper, the problem of determining optimal burn-in time is considered under a general failure model. There are two types of failure in the general failure model. One is Type I failure (minor failure) which can be removed by a minimal repair and the other is Type II failure (catastrophic failure) which can be removed only by a complete repair. In this model, when the unit fails at its age t, Type I failure occurs with probability 1 - p(t) and Type II failure occurs with probability p(t), $0{\leq}p(t)\leq1$. Under the model, the properties of optimal burn-in time maximizing mean time to the catastrophic failure during field operation are obtained. The obtained results are also applied to some illustrative examples.

  • In this paper, we adopt discontinuous Galerkin methods with penalty terms namely symmetric interior penalty Galerkin methods, to solve nonlinear viscoelasticity type equations. We construct finite element spaces and define an appropriate projection of u and prove its optimal convergence. We construct extrapolated fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the viscoelasticity type equation and prove ${\ell}^{\infty}(L^2)$ optimal error estimates in both spatial direction and temporal direction.

  • Dynamic nature and diverse requirements on construction sites make the automation technology harder to be employed actively. In this study, we analyzed optimal type of automation system and importance of core technologies for developing efficient construction automation system on 11 construction operations. As a result, it showed that man-machine cooperation system may be the most suitable for most operations, while autonomous robot will be best suited in hard working environment such as maintenance of exterior wall. In elemental technology, ease and accuracy of control and operation showed higher priority than others regardless of automation system type. These findings will provide useful information for developing the construction automation system.

  • An optimal 3-point quadrature formula of closed type is derived. It is shown that the optimal quadrature formula has a better error bound than the well-known Simpson's rule. A corrected formula is also considered. Various error inequalities for these formulas are established. Applications in numerical integration are given.

  • A thin sheet of metal with corrugated structures has been utilized in various devices: heat exchangers, separators in fuel cells, and many others. However, it is not easy to fabricate thin corrugated structures using a single-step stamping process due to their geometrical complexity. To solve this problem, firstly, a plate type heat exchanger was redesigned to attain the optimal value of aspect ratio and the optimal shape of corrugated structures for the actual loading conditions. A forming analysis of the corrugated plate was then carried out to determine the process parameters. From this work, the optimal value of aspect ratio was found to be 4.6. In addition, the process parameters of heat exchanger forming were optimized using the optimal value of aspect ratio, and the analytical results were evaluated through experiments. The results obtained indicated good agreements between them.
