  • In this study, we present an approach to parallelizing OPF that is suitable for distributed implementation and is applicable to very large inter-connected power systems. The approach could be used by utilities for optimal economy interchange without disclosing details of their operating costs to competitors. It could also be used to solve several other computational tasks, such as state estimation and power flow, in a distributed manner. The proposed algorithm was demonstrated with several case study systems.

  • In this paper, we consider the optimal control of detection threshold to minimize the conditional mean-square state estimation error for the probabilistic data association (PDA) filter. Earlier works on this problem involved the cumbersome graphical optimization algorithm or time-consuming numerical optimization algorithm. Using the numerical approximation of information reduction factor, we obtained the closed-form optimal detection threshold. This results are very useful for real-time implemenation.

  • In this paper, the estimation method for the power signal harmonics is proposed by using the time-varying optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filter. To estimate the magnitude and phase-angle of the harmonic components, the time-varying optimal FIR filter is designed for the state space representation of the noisy power signal which the magnitude and phase is considered as a stochastic process. Since the time-varying optimal FIR filter used in the proposed method does not use any priori information of the initial condition and has FIR structure, the proposed method could overcome the demerits of Kalman filter based method such as poor estimation and divergence problem. Due to the FIR structure, the proposed method is more robust against to the model uncertainty than the Kalman filter. Moreover, the proposed method gives more general solution than the time-invariant optimal FIR filter based harmonic estimation method. To verify the performance and robustness of the proposed method, the proposed method is compared with time-varying Kalman filter based method through simulation.

  • The paper considers nonparametric empirical Bayes estimation of residual survival function at age t using a Dirichlet process prior V(a). Empirical Bayes estimators are proposed for the case where both the function ${\alpha}$(0, $\chi$] and the size a(R$\^$+/) are unknown. It is shown that the proposed empirical Bayes estimators are asymptotically optimal at a rate n$\^$-1/, where n is the number of past data available for the present estimation problem. Therefore, the result of Lahiri and Park (1988) in which a(R$\^$+/) is assumed to be known and a rate n$\^$-1/ is achieved, is extended to a(R$\^$+/) unknown case.

  • This paper presents an improved algorithm of optimal measurement design with a reliability evaluation method for a large power system. The proposed algorithm is developed to consider the dummy bus and to achieve highest accuracy of the state estimator as well with the limited investment cost. The dummy bus in the power system is impossible to install measurement meter, while real and reactive power measurements is considered in the proposed algorithm. On the other hand, P/C model is developed by taking advantage of the matrix sparsity. The improved program is successfully tested for KEPCO system with PSS/E lineflow calculated data package.

  • This paper proposes the optimal placement with minimum set of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU's) using tabu search and makes an alternative plan to secure the robustness of the network with PMU's. The optimal PMU Placement (OPP) problem is generally expressed as a combinatorial optimization problem subjected to the observability constraints. Thus, it is necessary to make a use of an efficient method in solving the OPP problem. In this paper, a tabu search based approach to solve efficiently this OPP problem proposed. The observability of the network with PMU's is fragile at any single PMU contingency. To overcome the fragility, an alternative scheme that makes efficient use of the existing measurement system in power system state estimation proposed. The performance of the proposed approach and the alternative scheme is evaluated with IEEE sample systems.

  • Two control algorithms of active suspension system for improving ride quality are described and their effectiveness is assessed using a quarter car model. Optimal control approach demonstrates great flexibility to meet various running conditions of a vehicle. However, in order to fully utilize the power of optimal control apporach, accurate estimation of the state variables is essential. Simple, yet effective sky-hook algorithm seems to be well suited for real application because of its much relaxed requirements on sensing the stste variables and relative easiness to implment.

  • The standard estimation and filtering theory are well known and has recently been incorporated with the H$_{\infty}$ optimization techniques where the parametrizations of all estimators and filters are utilized. The issue of reducing its order is always of interest. This paper presents a method for synthesizing low-order stable state estimators. The method presented in this paper is based on the utilization of a free parameter function contained in the parametrization of all state estimators. The results obtained in the paper are compared with standard results on low-order estimators. Both results are shown to be the same in a sense of its orders, but the approaches taken are largely different. It is also shown in the paper that the method can easily and directly be extended to the Kalman filters and the H$_{\infty}$ (sub)optimal filters. Consequently, the orders of all state estimators, Kalman filters, and H$_{\infty}$ filters are shown to be reduced down to the number of states minus the number of outputs, respectively.ly.

  • Recently, it is increasing the concern of distributed generations(DGs) that installed small power at a site near by the customer. In deregulation environment, not only distributed generation operation but also state estimation is the key function in distribution systems. This paper process to calculate the impact of distributed generation on a distribution feeder. WLAV state estimation is performed the distribution systems with DGs and bad data test including single, multiple, interacting. Simulations with test cases are performed and the results are presented, using IEEE 34 bus radial distribution systems

  • In this paper, we consider the optimal fuzzy filter of nonlinear discrete-time with estimation error variance constraint. First, the Takagi and Sugeno(T-S) fuzzy model is employed to approximate the nonlinear system. Next, the error state is mean square bounded, and the steady state variance of the estimation error of each state is not more than the individual predefined value. It is shown that, the addressed problem can be carried out by solving linear matrix inequality(LMI) and some algebraic quadratic matrix inequalities. Finally, some examples are provided to illustrate the design procedure and expected performance through simulations.
