A Study on the Design of the Optimal Nonlinear Controller for Single State Feedback (단일상태 귀환 제어계의 최적 비선형제어기 설계에 관한 연구)

  • For feedback control of a linear dynamic system the optimum linear state regulator (OLSR) can be implemented only if all states are available for feedback. This work demonstrates that when only the output state is available for feedback, a nonlinear controllers can give improved performance over that obtained by a proportional controller. This paper found the optimal control law by dynamic programming and principles of optimalityl. This, performances of both proportional and nonlinear controllers are compared with performance of optimum linear state regulator.

  • In this paper, a new method of the optimal control of the regulator and tracking control problem concerning the dimension of the velocity is derived and applied for the second order plant. The output position, output velocity and the control effort are plottcd with time applying analog computer simulation. And it is compared with the output of the ordinary optimal control law in case the reference input is given by velocity function, and studied about the gain of this method.

  • This paper proposes an optimal incentive scheme for environmental pollution and output control in oligopoly markets under asymmetric information situation where the regulator has no information about each firm's technology on output productions and pollution abatements. We compare two interesting optimal incentive schemes (one is static model previously proposed and the other is dynamic model suggested in this paper), analyze features of these schemes, and carefully discuss its relevances to other schemes.

Electrical Design of a Solar Array for LEO Satellites

  • During daylight, the solar array of low earth orbit satellites harvests electrical power to operate satellites. The power conversion of the solar array is carried out by control of the operation point using the solar array regulator when the solar array faces the sunlight. Thus, the design of the solar array should comply with not only the power requirement of satellite system but also the input voltage requirement of the solar array regulator. In this paper, the design requirements of the solar array for low earth orbit satellites are defined, and the means of satisfying these requirements are described. In addition, the architecture of a multi-distributed interface is suggested to maximize the power harvested from a solar array having high temperature deviation between each panel. The power analysis in this paper shows the optimal number of multi-distributed interfaces with a converter.

  • The CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) boost topology is generally used in the PFC (Power Factor Correction) regulator of household air-conditioning systems. There are three kinds of power devices-bridge rectifier diodes, FRDs (Fast Recovery Diodes), and IGBTs (or MOSFETs) - used In a boost PFC regulator. Selecting the appropriate device is very cumbersome work, specially, in the case of FRDs and IGBTs, because there are several considerations as described below: 1) High frequency leakage current regulation (conducted and radiated EMI regulation) 2) Power losses and thermal design 3) Device cost. It should be noted that there are trade-offs between the power loss characteristic of 2) and the other characteristics of 1) and 3). This paper presents a detailed evaluation by using several types of power devices, which can be unintentionally used, to show that optimal selection can be achieved. Based on the given thermal resistances, thermal analysis and design procedures are also described from a practical viewpoint.

Structural optimal control based on explicit time-domain method

  • The classical optimal control (COC) method has been widely used for linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problems of structural control. However, the equation of motion of the structure is incorporated into the optimization model as the constraint condition for the LQR problem, which needs to be solved through the Riccati equation under certain assumptions. In this study, an explicit optimal control (EOC) method is proposed based on the explicit time-domain method (ETDM). By use of the explicit formulation of structural responses, the LQR problem with the constraint of equation of motion can be transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem, and therefore the control law can be derived directly without solving the Riccati equation. To further optimize the weighting parameters adopted in the control law using the gradient-based optimization algorithm, the sensitivities of structural responses and control forces with respect to the weighting parameters are derived analytically based on the explicit expressions of dynamic responses of the controlled structure. Two numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of the EOC method and the optimization scheme for weighting parameters involved in the control law.

Nonlinear control of a double-effect evaporator by riemannian geometric approach

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the details of design procedure of a nonlinear regulator by Riemannian geometric approach and to applied it to the case of a double-effect evaporator. A nonlinear geometric model is proposed on a direct sum space of a state vector and a control vector as well as in the previous parers by the authors. The geometric model is derived by replacing the orthogonal straight coordinate axes of a linear system on the direct sum space with the curvilinear coordinate axes. The integral manifold of the geometric model becomes homeomorphic to that of fictitious linear system. For the geometric model a nonlinear regulator with a performance index is designed renewedly by the procedure of optimization. The construction method of the curvilinear coordinate axes on which the nonlinear system behaves as a linear system is discussed. To apply the above regulator theory to double-effect evaporators especially to the pilot plant at the University of Alberta, a suitable nonlinear model is determined by the plant dynamics. The optimal control law is derived through the calculation of the homeomorphism. As a result it is confirmed that the regulator is effective and superior to that of the conventional control.

A New Photovoltaic System Architecture of Module-Integrated Converter with a Single-sourced Asymmetric Multilevel Inverter Using a Cost-effective Single-ended Pre-regulator

  • In this paper, a new architecture for a cost-effective power conditioning systems (PCS) using a single-sourced asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (MLI) for photovoltaic (PV) applications is proposed. The asymmetric MLI topology has a reduced number of parts compared to the symmetrical type for the same number of voltage level. However, the modulation index threshold related to the drop in the number of levels of the inverter output is higher than that of the symmetrical MLI. This problem results in a modulation index limitation which is relatively higher than that of the symmetrical MLI. Hence, an extra voltage pre-regulator becomes a necessary component in the PCS under a wide operating bias variation. In addition to pre-stage voltage regulation for the constant MLI dc-links, another auxiliary pre-regulator should provide isolation and voltage balance among the multiple H-bridge cells in the asymmetrical MLI as well as the symmetrical ones. The proposed PCS uses a single-ended DC-DC converter topology with a coupled inductor and charge-pump circuit to satisfy all of the aforementioned requirements. Since the proposed integrated-type voltage pre-regulator circuit uses only a single MOSFET switch and a single magnetic component, the size and cost of the PCS is an optimal trade-off. In addition, the voltage balance between the separate H-bridge cells is automatically maintained by the number of turns in the coupled inductor transformer regardless of the duty cycle, which eliminates the need for an extra voltage regulator for the auxiliary H-bridge in MLIs. The voltage balance is also maintained under the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Thus, the PCS is also operational during light load conditions. The proposed architecture can apply the module-integrated converter (MIC) concept to perform distributed MPPT. The proposed architecture is analyzed and verified for a 7-level asymmetric MLI, using simulation results and a hardware implementation.

Study of the effects of injector cleaning on the exhaust gases in a common rail diesel engine (커먼레일 디젤엔진의 인젝터 클리닝이 배기가스에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • As a response to exhaust gas regulations, the electronic control system was applied to the diesel engine. The injected fuel mass and injection timing are accurately controlled using it, and the fuel efficiency and the engine output are significantly increased. In addition, the noise and the vibration of vehicles are decreased. To maintain the optimal performance of an electronic control diesel engine, it is important to control the fuel injection pressure accurately using the fuel pressure regulator. When the fuel pressure regulator is not worked normally, the failure phenomena (starting failure, staring delay, accelerated failure, engine mismatch et al.) occurred because the fuel pressure is not stabilized and controlled accurately. In this study, the effects on a fuel pressure, return fuel mass flow, and engine rotating speed according to the control rate of fuel pressure regulator were investigated to analyze the performance variation under the failure conditions of a fuel pressure regulator. As a result, when the control rate of a fuel pressure regulator decreased by 4%~6% compared to that of the standard condition, the variation of engine rotating speed and return fuel flow were increased greatly, and the abnormal condition occurred. In addition, it is possible to diagnose the failure of a fuel pressure regulator by monitoring these conditions.
