  • We develope a model that can manipulate the reflux ratio of a batch distillation process in real time for optimal operations. Firstly, reflux ratio decision model for batch distillation unit was developed using the simple short-cut method. Secondly, more detailed rigorous method was applied to improve the accuracy of the model. Based on these models, operational strategies for the optimal reflux ratio was proposed. The results are illustrated with suitable examples and compared with the results using commercial simulator.

  • Three different reflux policies are compared for a batch distillation process in which a fixed recovery with a given average purity of the distillate is required ; the first, for the constant distillate purity ; the second, for the constant reflux ratio ; finally, for the optimal reflux policy which gives the minimum operation time. The optimal reflux policy was obtained using pontryagin's maximum principle. Througy the numerical simulations for the three different binary mixtures, it was found that the time advantage of the optimal reflux operation over the constant overhead composition operation varies form 10.0 to 22.4% and the advantage over the constant reflux operation varies from 1106 to 36.6% in the three cases considered.

  • To determine the optimum condition for the extraction of active components, noni adventitious roots were extracted under various conditions employing various solvents including methanolic water at different ratio (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% water), extraction times and extraction methods. Anthraquinones, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids extraction using different solvents showed that 1 h of ultrasonic extraction was effective in 60-80% methanol, and 2 h of reflux extraction was effective in 80% methanol. To compare the extraction efficiency of active components according to different extraction methods and extraction times for noni adventitious roots, the active components were extracted by ultrasonic extraction, shaking extraction, reflux extraction, homogenizer extraction, high-pressure extraction, and soaking extraction. The highest phenolic contents were found in the extracted from ultrasonic extraction and anthraquinones and flavonoids contents were highest in the reflux extraction.

  • In this study, we have completed the simulation and optimization work for the deethanizer column which was used for natural gas processing plant or saturated gas plant in a petrochemical process. An optimal feed stage location which minimizes the reboiler heat duty was determined. For the modeling of deethanizer, PRO/II with PROVISION was used and Soave modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state model was selected. Through this study, we have found that the minimum number of stage and minimum reflux ratio for separation were 9.03 and 0.62437, respectively and the theoretical stage number was 12, optimal feed stage location was 9 and minimum reboiler heat duty was $12.7470{\times}10^6\;KJ/hr$.

  • The aim of this study is finding the optimal design parameters and the optimal operation variables of a reactive distillation column. Different from steady state optimization, dynamic optimization makes it possible considering operation ability as well as design problems at process design step. For performing dynamic optimization, dynamic simulation should be done first. If dynamic simulation is already finished, dynamic optimization can be performed with less effort than that of dynamic simulation.Reactive distillation systems involving reaction and separation in a single unit have the potential to reduce capital and operating costs, particularly when reaction have conversion constraint or when azeotropes exist making conventional separation difficult and expensive. This study here present work on the continuous distillation process, the homogeneous catalyzed esterification of methanol and acetic acid, the synthesis of methyl acetate. Based on an equilibrium stage model of a reactive distillation column a dynamic optimization problem was formulated and solved. And the results were verified by performing dynamic simulation and showing the variation of conversion and purity as the variation of the operation variables. As the results of dynamic optimization, this study found optimal feed ratio, reflux ratio and reboiler duty of this system. And as this study applied it to dynamic simulations the dynamic characteristics of a reactive distillation column are showed under optimal operating condition.

  • In this article, we develop a reactive distillation (RD) column configuration for the production of hydrogen. This RD column is in the HI decomposition section of the sulphur - iodine (SI) thermochemical cycle, in which HI decomposition and H2 separation take place simultaneously. The section plays a major role in high hydrogen production efficiency (that depends on reaction conversion and separation efficiency) of the SI cycle. In the column simulation, the rigorous thermodynamic phase equilibrium and reaction kinetic model are used. The tuning parameters involved in phase equilibrium model are dependent on interactive components and system temperature. For kinetic model, parameter values are adopted from the Aspen flowsheet simulator. Interestingly, there is no side reaction (e.g., solvation reaction, electrolyte decomposition and polyiodide formation) considered aiming to make the proposed model simple that leads to a challenging prediction. The process parameters are determined on the basis of optimal hydrogen production as reflux ratio = 0.87, total number of stages = 19 and feeding point at 8th stage. With this, the column operates at a reasonably low pressure (i.e., 8 bar) and produces hydrogen in the distillate with a desired composition (H2 = 9.18 mol%, H2O = 88.27 mol% and HI = 2.54 mol%). Finally, the results are compared with other model simulations. It is observed that the proposed scheme leads to consume a reasonably low energy requirement of 327 MJ/kmol of H2.

  • Purpose : Urachal anomalies are rare but are known to develop several complications, especially infection. Moreover, uniform guidelines for management have not been presented because of the variable clinical characteristics of these anomalies. The purpose of this report is to review our experience with urachal anomalies and attempt to determine the optimal management. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the records of fourteen children with a variety of urachal anomalies who had been treated from January 1996 to June 2005 at Dong Kang General Hospital. Results : The age distribution of the patients(mean age; 3.8 years) was six neonates, one infant, five preschool-age and two school-age children. The male to female ratio was 1:1. Six cases of urachal cyst, four cases of patent urachus, two cases of urachal sinus and two cases of urachal diverticulum were found. Three patients with patent urachus and one with urachal cyst had hydronephrosis. Other associated anomalies included an inguinal hernia in one patient with urachal sinus and a vesicoureteral reflux in one patient with urachal diver ticulum. As a first-line diagnostic tool, high-resolution ultrasound examination was performed in thirteen cases and computed tomography in one case. Surgical excision was performed in nine patients with urachal anomaly. Five cases out of six neonatal cases experienced spontaneous improvement during a three-month follow up period. Due to frequent infection of the umbilicus, surgical excision was performed on one neonate with urachal sinus. Conclusion : All patients with urachal anomalies should undergo investigation for associated anomalies. The neonate with urachal anomalies, especially patent urachus, do not require surgical excision unless the patient has multiple episodes of recurrent infection.
