  • The design of an ultra fast ellipsometer is suggested. It adopts the division-of-amplitude-photopolarimeter (DOAP) as the polarization state detector. It does not utilize any moving part such as the rotating polarizer(analyzer) or even any electronic modulation part like the piezo-electric phase modulator. Hence the time resolution of the present system is limited only by the response time of the photo-detector and electronic circuit as well as the analog-digital converter. The feasibility of the suggested ultra fast ellipsometer was tested and the response time with nano-second time resolution has been verified. Its future application to the investigation of kinetics including that of the phase-change optical recording media like GezSb2 Tes is discussed. ussed.

  • Pre-stressed concrete circular spun piles are widely used in various infrastructure projects around the world and offer an economical deep foundation system with consistent and superior quality compared to cast in-situ and other concrete piles. Conventional methods for measuring the lateral response of piles have been limited to conventional instrumentation, such as electrical based gauges and pressure transducers. The problem with existing technology is that the sensors are not able to assist in recording the lateral stiffness changes of the pile which varies along the length depending on the distribution of the flexural moments and appearance of tensile cracks. This paper describes a full-scale bending test of a 1-m diameter spun pile of 30 m long and instrumented using advanced fibre optic distributed sensor, known as Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA). Optical fibre sensors were embedded inside the concrete during the manufacturing stage and attached on the concrete surface in order to measure the pile's full-length flexural behaviour under the prescribed serviceability and ultimate limit state. The relationship between moments-deflections and bending moments-curvatures are examined with respect to the lateral forces. Tensile cracks were measured and compared with the peak strains observed from BOTDA data which corroborated very well. By analysing the moment-curvature response of the pile, the structure can be represented by two bending stiffness parameters, namely the pre-yield (EI) and post-yield (EIcr), where the cracks reduce the stiffness property by 89%. The pile deflection profile can be attained from optical fibre data through closed-form solutions, which generally matched with the displacements recorded by Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers (LVDTs).

  • We demonstrate and characterize a volume holographic filter operating at $1.55{\mu}m$ region, which corresponds to the wavelength region of optical communication system. By changing recording times or the angle between writing beams. the reflectivity, the filtered wavelength, and the bandwidth of this filter can be controlled. A center wavelength of 1532.8 nm, reflectivity of 10.7% and a bandwidth with full width at half-maximum of 4.0nm are measured in our experiment.

  • The precision fabrication of aspherical lenses is increasingly required for the latest applications of compact and high resolution video-recording or camera systems. Micro-optical components, including micro-spherical or aspherical lenses and reflecting mirrors, are generally required to be manufactured with high shape accuracy, extremely low surface roughness and no surface damage. To meet the needs of the precision fabrication system, a bed which supports the micro aspherical lens fabrication machines stably and safely is required. In this study, the thickness of the ribs of the bed is optimized using the CAD integrated optimal design system, a virtual DS program.

  • Nowadays, many studies and researches in data storage have been carried out and storage capacity is increased. But the limitation of storage capacity is happened for several problems. One of them is spot & pit size in optical and magnetic data storage and another is the resolution of actuators. The problems in spot & pit size is covered by new data storage methods- for example, NFR{Near-Field Recoding) system. But the resolution limit of an actuator doesn't follow up the development of spot & pit size. Because of them, we should improve a resolution of an actuator. Especially, in this paper an actuator is studied and designed for NFR(in using SIL(Solid Immersion Lens) system. It is a dual stage actuator, which consists of a Fine actuator and a Coarse actuator, and should desire 100nm accuracy. But, our actuator system only includes tracking mechanism execpt focusing mechanism which is controlled by slider mechanism used in HDD. Its actuating force generation method is VCM(Voice Coil Motor). The Fine actuator is composed of 4-leaf springs and a bobbin wrapped by coil. The Coarse actuator has Coils and 3-Roller bearings.

  • Compared with other transport means, safety and timeliness are the merits of railways. Unexpectedly when accident happens, much time and human strength are required to cope with the accident. And for swift recovery, systematic rehabilitation is needed. Recently using MTS(Moving picture Transmission System), we can perform accident rehabilitation and recording work efficiently. MTS is the device that transmits continuous picture information from accident field to control center. We are developing the appropriate system to railway situation to make use of the existing information communication technology, processing technology of video-tex, super high speed transmission technology through fiber-optic, copper cable and network description of information Technology, etc. If these communication-based can technologies are applied to railway system, railway managers can control the accident by inspecting the picture of accident field and can contribute to the safe train operation and the improvement of railway management. In this paper, we investigate the connecting methods when optical fiber is used for moving picture data transmission of train accidents, and its problems. And, we validate MTS's performance through about 28km section of field test.

  • Recently, various recording technologies are studied for optical data storage. After standardization of BD (Blue-ray Disc) and HD-DVD (High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc), the industry is looking for a suitable technology for next generation optical data storage. Super-RENS (Super-resolution near field structure) technique, which is capable of compatibility with other systems, is one of next optical data storage. In this paper, we analyze the nonlinearity of Super-RENS read-out signal through the bicoherence test, which uses HOS (Higher-Order Statistics) and apply neural networks for nonlinear modeling. The model structure considered in this paper is the NARX (Nonlinear AutoRegressive eXogenous) model. The experiment results indicate that the read-out signals have nonlinear characteristics. In addition, it verified the possibility that neural networks can be utilized for nonlinear modeling of Super-RENS systems.

  • Fractal-space multiplexing using a moving window(MW) can multiplex holograms by moving a window left and right. and up and down. But, crosstalk occurs by two neighboring moving windows in the vertical direction of the holographic memory system and limits high-density information recording. Accordingly, we analyzed the crosstalk with the focal length of lens, the distance of MW, and the number of multiplexed hologram to record high-density infromation and presented the optical experimental results of fractal-space multiplexing using volumetric photorefractive crystal and disc type photopolymer.

  • With respect to the researches of the optical flying head(OFH) , the head-gimbal assembly should be analyzed to guarantee the stable fabrication and the characteristics of shock resistance. The suitable design is proved through the Probabilistic analysis of the design parameters and material properties of the model. Probabilistic analysis is a technique that be used to assess the effect of uncertain input parameters and assumptions on your analysis model. Using a probabilistic analysis you can find out how much the results of a finite elements analysis are affected by uncertainties in the model. Another factor is analysis of the dynamic shock analysis. For the mobile application, one of the important requirements is durability under severe environmental condition, especially, resistance to mechanical shock. An important challenge in the disk recording is to improve disk drive robustness in shock environments. If the system comes in contact with outer shock disturbance. the system gets critical damage in head-gimbal assembly or disk. This paper describes probabilistic and dynamic shock analysis of head-gimbal assembly in micro MO drives using OFH slider.

  • Compared with traditional video monitoring systems that provide a video-recording function as a main service, an intelligent video monitoring system is capable of extracting/tracking objects and detecting events such as car accidents, traffic congestion, pedestrian detection, and so on. Thus, the object tracking is an essential function for various intelligent video monitoring and surveillance systems. In this paper, we propose a background and local histogram-based object tracking approach for intelligent video monitoring systems. For robust object tracking in a live situation, the result of optical flow and local histogram verification are combined with the result of background subtraction. In the proposed approach, local histogram verification allows the system to track target objects more reliably when the local histogram of LK position is not similar to the previous histogram. Experimental results are provided to show the proposed tracking algorithm is robust in object occlusion and scale change situation.
