Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.
The loss in contrast-discrimination ability of the human visual system under high ambient illumination level can cause image quality degradation in mobile phones. In this paper, we propose a perceived contrast compensation method by processing the original displayed image. With consideration that the perceived contrast significantly varies across the image, this method extracts the local band contrast from the original image; it then compensates these contrast components to counteract the perceived contrast degradation. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can maintain most contrast details even in high ambient illumination levels.
The ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring f the study of biological oceanography. OSMI performs solar and dark calibrations for on-orbit instrument calibration. The purpose of the solar calibration is to monitor the degradation of imaging performance for each pixel of 6 spectral bands and to correct the degradation effect on OSMI image during the ground station date processing. The design, the operation concept, and the radiometric characteristics of the solar calibration are investigated. A linear model of image response and a solar calibration radiance model are proposed to study the instrument characteristics using the solar calibration data. The performance of spectral responsivity and spatial response uniformity. The first solar calibration data and the analysis results are important references for further study on the on-orbit stability of OSMI response during its lifetime.
This paper presents the preliminary results on the application of optical fiber sensor(OFS) for the diagnosis of degradation in the transformer oil. An OFS system using a Mach-Zehnder interferometry technique was built to detect attenuation of acoustic signal produced by discharging. With increasing the number of discharging in the insulation oil, the attenuation of acoustic signal became greater. A strong correlation between electrical and acoustic signal intensities from discharge generated in the transformer oil was confirmed by the results reported here.
A null test method which relies on a computer generated hologram (CGH) is widely used to measure a large aspheric surface. For precise measurements of the surface shape of an aspheric optics, the CGH must precisely generate a wavefront that can fit on the ideal surface shape of the aspheric optics. If fabrication errors arise in the CGH, an unwanted wavefront will be generated and the measuring result will lack trustworthiness. Thus far, there has been limited research on wavefronts generated by CGH using only linear-type binary grating models. In this study, a theoretical error model of a circular-type zone plate, the most commonly used types for CGH patterns, is suggested. The proposed error model is checked by simulations and experiments.
To clarify the relations of optical properties to the main factors responsible for the loss and damage of luminous efficacy, a 20 min turn-on/turn-off test for 2,000 h for a ceramic metal halide lamp is conducted. The corrosion rates of the arc tube wall and electrode are estimated based on thermal stress. Wall blackening is attributed to the tungsten being transported from the hot electrode tips to the relatively cold arc tube wall. Furthermore, the grain boundaries of the arc tube are changed by the degradation. Distortion of the electrode is observed, and the ignition and the driving voltage of the load both increase. Finally, the color rendering index and the color coordinates are changed after the degradation. The luminous flux and the intensity of the luminous distribution are decreased significantly.
Te-thin films were highly proper material for optical recording media, but has the demerit of short archival life time due to the unstability to humidity. In order to restrain the degradation, Te$_{100-x}$Se$_{x}$ alloys adding Se stable for the humidity were fabricated. Primarily, to measure the degradation rate with varing the composition of Se to x=5, 10, 14, 25 at.% at Te$_{100-x}$ Se$_{x}$, the change of light transmittance was used in various temperature-humidity environments. As the results, it was showed that Se$_{86}$Te$_{14}$ thin was the most proper composition for the improvement of degradation restraint.int.int.
We investigated the combined effect of fiber chromatic dispersion and self-phase modulation (SPM) in multi-channel subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) optical transmission systems. We theoretically analyzed the transmission characteristics of the SCM signals with the effect of SPM and chromatic dispersion in a single-mode optical fiber by numerical simulations based on the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The numerical simulation results revealed that the effect of fiber dispersion and SPM could occur independently between subcarrier channels in two-channel SCM systems for small optical modulation index (OMI) and large channel spacing. However, for large OMI, small channel spacing, and large fiber launching power, we found a performance degradation of the two-channel system compared to that of a single-channel system. These parameters are therefore important for the optimization of multi-channel SCM systems applicable to radio over fiber networks.
Aspheric polymer lens fabrication using isothermal compression molding is presented in this paper. Due to increasing definition of an image sensor, higher precision is required by a lens which can be used as a part of an imageforming optical module. Injection molding is a factory standard method for a polymer optical lens. But achievable precision using injection molding has a formidable limitation due to the machining of complex mold structure and melting and cooling down a polymer melt under high pressure condition during forming process. To overcome the precision requirement and limitation using injection molding method, isothermal compression molding is applied to fabrication of a polymer optical lens. The fabrication condition is determined by numerical simulations of temperature distribution and given material properties. Under the found condition, the lens having a high precision can successfully be reproduced and does not show birefringence which results often in optical degradation.
