Spring-like leg models have been employed to explain various dynamic characteristics in human walking. However, this leg stiffness model has limitations to represent complex motion of actual human gait, especially the behaviors of each lower limb joint. The purpose of this research was to determine changes of total leg stiffness and lower limb joint stiffness with gait speed in knee osteoarthritis. Joint stiffness defined as the ratio of the joint torque change to the angular displacement change. Eight subjects with knee osteoarthritis participated to this study. The subject walked on a 12 m long and 1 m wide walkway with three sets of four different randomly ordered gait speeds, ranging from their self-selected speed to maximum speed. Kinetic and kinematic data were measured using three force plates and an optical marker system, respectively. Joint torques of lower limb joints calculated by a multi-segment inverse dynamics model. Total leg and each lower limb joint had constant stiffness during single support phase. The leg and hip joint stiffness increased with gait speed. The correlation between knee joint angles and torques had significant changed by the degree of severity of knee osteoarthritis.

The propagation of the impulse wave discharged from the Inclined exit of a pipe is investigated through shock tube experiment and numerical computations. The pressure histories and directivities of the impulse wave propagating outside from the exit of pipe with several different configurations are analyzed for the range of the incident shock wave Mach number between 1.1 and 1.4. In the shock tube experiments, the impulse waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system for the purpose of validation of computational work. Computations using the two-dimensional. unsteady, compressible, Euler equations are carried out to represent the experimented impulse waves. Computed Schlieren images predict the experimented impulse waves with a good accuracy. The results obtained show that for the radial direction the peak pressure of the impulse wave discharged depends upon the Inclined angle of the exit of the pipe. but for the axial direction it is almost constant regardless of the inclined angle of the pipe exit.

Compared to the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), the modified CMA (MCMA) is easy not only to improve the steady-state performance but also to be expanded to higher-order constellations by using fewer moduli with evenly spaced. In this paper, it is shown that the MCMA is sufficient to achieve satisfactory steady-state performance by applying a variable step-size to the MCMA without switching to an hard decision-directed algorithm. Two new methods varying the step-size are proposed, and the performance improvement of the MCMA with the new methods of variable step-size is presented as compared to the CMA and the fixed step-size MCMA through computer simulations.
Metamaterials operating in the terahertz frequency range show promising potential for use in highly sensitive microbial sensors that are capable of effectively detecting microorganisms in the ambient environment. We were able to detect extremely small numbers of microorganisms by measuring the differential transmission spectra (DTS) of the metamaterial resonances. This was possible because their sizes are on the same scale as the microgaps of the terahertz metamaterials. DTS depend critically on the number of microorganisms placed in the gap area, and their dielectric constant. In addition, these metamaterial microbial sensors are reusable, because the microorganisms can be completely removed by fungicide solution. Finite-difference time-domain simulations successfully reproduce our experimental data.

This study is focused on the root mean square and peak-to-valley based on the injection conditions of the f-theta lens, one of the main components of laser printers and laser scanning systems. The f-theta lens of an aspherical plastic lens requires ultra-preaction. Injection molding is typically used for the mass production of aspherical plastic lenses. In the injection-molding method, the resin in the lens shape is filled with the resin after melting the plastic pellets at a constant temperature and then cooled. It is necessary to maintain a uniform injection molding system to produce high-quality lenses. These injection-molding systems are influenced by different factors, such as pressure, speed, temperature, mold, and cooling. It is possible to obtain a lens that exhibits the optical characteristics required to achieve harmony. We investigated the root mean square and peak-to-valley caused by variations in temperature, a critical parameter in the melting and cooling of plastic resins generated inside and outside the injection mold.

We have investigated the dimensional nature of center-of-mass exciton confinement states in a CdMnTe/CdTe/CdMnTe heterostructure, where the CdTe well is too wide (144 nm) to confine both electrons and holes but able to confine whole excitons in the center-of-mass coordinate. Fine multiple photoluminescence spectra with a few meV separation were observed at 6 K. From the thickness dependence of the transition rate, they were attributed to even numbered center-of-mass exciton confinement states (N = 2, 4, 6, ${\cdots}$, 18). Dimensionality of the center-of-mass exciton confinement states was also investigated in terms of temperature dependence of radiative decay time. At low temperatures (${\leq}12K$), we found that the ground state excitons are likely localized possibly due to the barrier interface fluctuation, resulting in a constant decay time (~350 ps). With increased temperature (${\geq}12K$), localized excitons are thermally released, giving rise to a linear temperature dependence of radiative decay time as an evidence of two-dimensional nature.
The resonance characteristics of H-shaped metamaterials, whose widths were varied while keeping the height constant, were investigated in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The H-shaped metamaterials were numerically analyzed in two modes in which the polarization of the incident THz electric field was either parallel or perpendicular to the width of the H-shaped structure. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial changed stably in each mode, even if only the width of the H shape was changed. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial operating in the two modes increases without significant difference regardless of the polarization of the incident electromagnetic wave as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial increases. The electric field distribution and the surface current density induced in the metamaterial in the two modes were numerically analyzed by varying the structure ratio of the metamaterial. The numerical analysis clearly revealed the cause of the change in the resonance characteristics as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial changed. The efficacy of the numerical analysis was verified experimentally using the THz-TDS (time-domain spectroscopy) system. The experimental results are consistent with the simulations, clearly demonstrating the meaningfulness of the numerical analysis of the metamaterial. The analyzed resonance properties of the H-shaped metamaterial in the THz frequency range can be applied for designing THz-tunable metamaterials and improving the sensitivity of THz sensors.
In this study, the effect on the stability of Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) caused by an AGS separator was investigated. The AGS separator was a hydrocyclone. The main factors of the AGS separator were filter pore size (0.125~0.600 mm), conical-to-cylindrical ratio (1.5~3.0), and operating time (1~20 min). The AGS/mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) ratio gradually increased to 0.500 mm (AGS/MLSS: 84.3±3.0%). AGS was best separated at the conical-to-cylindrical ratio of 2.5 (AGS/MLSS: 84.7±3.3%). As the operating time increased, the AGS separation performance also tended to increase. The shortest AGS separator run time, but the highest AGS separation performance was 10 min (87.0±2.5%). AGS stability was evaluated by operating the selected AGS separator and sequencing batch reactor. The average removal efficiencies of TOC, TCODCr, SS, TN, and TP were 95.7%, 96.9%, 93.0%, 89.0%, and 96.2%, respectively, which met the effluent standards in Korea. In addition, the AGS/MLSS ratio tended to remain constant, and the sludge volume index demonstrated a tendency to decrease from 140 mL/g to 70 mL/g. During the operation, the particles of AGS in optical microscope observations gradually increased.

The element iron (Fe) is affordable and abundantly available, and thus, it finds use in a wide range of applications. As regards its application in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the electrochemical reactions of Fe must be clearly understood during battery charging and discharging with the LIB electrolyte. In this study, we conducted systematic electrochemical analyses under various voltage conditions to determine the voltage at which Fe corrosion begins in general lithium salts and organic solvents used in LIBs. During cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, we observed a large corrosion current above 4.0 V (vs. Li/Li+). When a constant voltage of 3.7 V (vs. Li/Li+), was applied, the current did not increase significantly at the beginning, similar to the CV scenario; on the other hand, at a voltage of 3.8 V (vs. Li/Li+), the current increased rapidly. The impact of this difference was visually confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements showed that at 3.7 V, a thick organic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) was formed atop a thin fluoride SEI, which means that at ≥3.8 V, the SEI cannot prevent Fe corrosion. This result confirms that Fe corrosion begins at 3.7 V, beyond which Fe is easily corrodible.
In this study, we investigate the tribological behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel pairs under deionized water and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) water dispersion lubrication. The specimen friction and wear properties are evaluated using a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer. The coefficient of friction remains nearly constant throughout the test under both lubricant conditions. The wear depth of the specimens under h-BN lubrication is smaller than that under deionized water lubrication, indicating the inhibition behavior of h-BN nanolubricants on direct metal-metal contacts. Optical micrographs and stylus profilometer measurements are performed to evaluate the severity of damage caused by the sliding motion and to determine the wear morphology of the specimens, respectively. The results show that h-BN nanolubricants does not have a significant effect on the friction behavior but demonstrates reduced wear owing to their trapping effect between the sliding interfaces. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy images of the specimens were acquired to confirm the trapping effect of h-BN between the sliding interfaces. The results also suggest that the trapped lubricants can distribute the contact pressure, reducing the wear damage caused by the metal-metal contact at the interface. In conclusion, h-BN nanolubricants have potential as an anti-wear additive for lubrication applications. Further investigation is needed to provide direct evidence of the trapping effect of h-BN nanoparticles between the sliding interfaces. These findings could lead to the development of more efficient and effective lubricants for various industrial applications.
