  • This paper proposes a new operation algorithm for elevator by considering both better service for passengers and minimization of energy consumption for elevator operation. The main idea of the proposed operation algorithm is based on the assumption that passengers push the numbered buttons indicating their destination, one of the main differences of proposed operation mode from the conventional one is that the elevator may move to the opposite direction for a few floors according to the rescheduled operational pattern determined by some factors. Some examples by computer simulation show the efficiency of the proposed operation algorithm.

  • The symmetry is general geometric design principal in contemporary architecture shape. But, Symmetry sometimes easily causes unreasonable design. In some reason, two of symmetric units in the apartment, one side of unit have very reasonable plan and arrangement but opposite side unit nay not. For example, if the kitchen on right unit had right-handed arrangement, the symmetrical other would have left-handed kitchen arrangement. In addition to this, if each house unit has the same plan but different direction, each unit has different usage or affects the residents' life pattern. Nevertheless, Architects use only one unit plan to design public housing development by using symmetric operator (mirror, proper rotation, inversion center) at their option. This study suggests that using group theory and mathematical matrix rather than designer's discretion can solve this symmetry problem clearly. And, this study analysis the merits and demerits between each symmetrical pair of unit plan shapes by using mathematical point group theory and matrix.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of hourly PET(Potential Evapo Transpiration) variation estimated using Penman ET model. The estimated PET using Penman model was compared with measured ET. For this study, two subwatersheds were selected, and fluxes, meteorological data and soil moisture data were measured during the summer and winter days. During the winter days, the aerodynamic term of Penman ET is much greater than that of energy term of Penman ET for dry soil condition. The opposite phenomena appeared fer wet soil condition. During the summer days, energy term is much more important factor for ET estimation compared with aerodynamic term regardless of soil moisture condition. Penman ET, measured ET, and energy term show the similar hourly variation pattern mainly because the influence of net radiation on the estimation of Penman ET is much more significant compared with other variables. Even though there are much more soil moisture in the soil during the wet days, the estimated hourly ET from Penman model and measured hourly ET have smaller values compared with those of dry days, indicating the effect of cloudy weather condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine temporal structures of English words beginning with an /s/ plus stop sequence through production experiments with native speakers of Korean learning English and native speakers of English. According to the results of our production experiment, both a beginner and an advanced group of Korean English learners produced /s/ shorter than a following stop, while the opposite pattern was observed in English native speakers' production. An advanced group of Korean English learners were good at producing a stop after /s/ as unaspirated, but their production of a stop following /s/ was different from English native speakers' production in that the closure duration of the stop was much longer.

  • Long-tenn variation in krill (Euphausia superba) and salp (mainly Salpa thompsoni) stocks was compared to environmental changes in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Antarctic. Environmental conditions examined were air temperature, water temperature, salinity, and sea-ice extent from 1926 to 1938 and from 1982 to 2000. The long-term pattern of krill was opposite to that of salp: krill stock decreased while salp stock increased concurrently. Krill stock was about three-fold higher from 1926 to 1938 than from 1982 to 2000, but salp was about four -fold lower in 1926-1938 than in 1982-2000. A wanning trend was observed in the environmental data, and the long-term variation in krill and salp stocks was affected by this trend.

  • Computations are presented for the ortho- and para-substituted benzyl alcohol-$H_2O$ clusters. A variety of conformers are predicted, and their relative energies are compared. Binding energies of the clusters are computed, and detailed analysis is presented on the effects of substitution on the strength of the hydrogen bond in the clusters. F- and $NH_2-$ substituted clusters are studied to analyze the effects of electron-withdrawing and electron-pushing groups. In para-substituted clusters, the inductive effects are dominant, affecting the binding energies in opposite way depending on whether the hydroxyl group is proton-donating or -accepting. For ortho-substituted clusters, more direct involvement of the substituting group and the resulting geometry change of the hydrogen bond should be invoked to elucidate complicated pattern of the binding energy of the clusters.

  • In this study, the physicochemical and sensory properties of glutinous rice kochujang added with germinated barley powder were periodically examined during storage at $20^{\circ}C$ for 40 days. The pH level of glutinous rice kochujang added with germinated barley powder increased gradually with a higher amount of germinated barley powder, whereas it gradually decreased during storage. On the other hand, acidity showed the opposite pattern. The salinity of samples decreased gradually with a higher amount of germinated barley powder. The L-, a and b-values of samples increased gradually with a higher amount of germinated barley powder, whereas they decreased gradually during storage. Amino nitrogen content of glutinouse rice kochujang increased gradually with a higher amount of germinated barley powder, whereas they increased gradually during storage. In the sensory evaluation, glutinous rice kochujang added with 5~10% germinated barley powder was superior in color, texture and overall preference. Therefore, addition of 5~10% germinated barley powder was optimum for improving kochujang quality.

  • Throughout the economic development era of Korea, migration occurred within a spatial hierarchy, with upward flows from rural areas to urban. The concept of step migration is a typical theory to explain these upward migration flows. Recent migration data and trends, however, indicate that migration-pattern regime shows strongly opposite-direction flows, with many of the major migration flowing downward on this national-spatial hierarchy, away from urban areas. In this study, we examine the most recent structure of migration flows up and down within the national-spatial hierarchy. We define seven tiers to tabulate origin-destination migration flows from population density of local administrative districts for the period 2001-2014, and then analyze the migration patterns between the tiers over time. The results show differentiated patterns of migration within the national-spatial hierarchy over time including specific states of migrants' life cycles.

  • The residual stresses in molded plastic parts can be divided into the flow induced residual stresses produced in flowing stages and the thermally induced residual stresses produced in cooling state. Reducing residual stresses in the final parts is one of the goals in recent study. The present study focused on comparing the predicted values for thermal residual stresses in freely and constrained quenched plastic plates with and without free volume theory. As a result the final residual stresses showed the opposite pattern in thickness direction. furthermore by applying free volume theory the predicted residual stress at the center showed about 50% of the values without free volume theory for constrained quenched case.

  • Alteration of molecular markers related to apoptosis of in vivo normal system and in vitro cancerous system by soy-isoflavonoid with estrogen was investigated. Down-regulation of Bcl-2 was accompanied by decreased expression of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) in mature female rats treated with soy-isoflavonoid and estrogen. In ovariectomized rat system, Bax was regulated by higher concentration of soy treatment. Bax up-regulation by soy-isoflavonoid genistein treatment was observed in MCF-7 mammary cancer cell system. Estrogen without soy induced similar pattern of Bax expression as soy-isoflavonoid in vivo, but exhibited opposite trend in vitro. These findings suggest soy-isoflavonoid may have potential to induce apoptosis at higher concentrations through up-regulation of Bax or down-regulation of Bcl-2 expressions depending on normal or cancerous state, and physiological status of rats.
