  • Objectives: This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of preheating on the hardness of nanofilled, nanoceramic, nanohybrid, and microhybrid resin composites. Materials and Methods: An electronic search of papers on MEDLINE/PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost was performed. Only in vitro studies were included. Non-English studies, case reports, clinical trials, and review articles were excluded. A meta-analysis of the reviewed studies was conducted to quantify differences in the microhardness of the Z250 microhybrid resin composite using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Results: Only 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. The meta-analysis showed that there were significant differences between the non-preheated and preheated modes for both the top and bottom surfaces of the specimens (p < 0.05). The microhardness of the Z250 resin composite on the top surface in the preheated mode (78.1 ± 2.9) was higher than in the non-preheated mode (67.4 ± 4.0; p < 0.001). Moreover, the microhardness of the Z250 resin composite on the bottom surface in the preheated mode (71.8 ± 3.8) was higher than in the non-preheated mode (57.5 ± 5.7, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Although the results reported in the reviewed studies showed great variability, sufficient scientific evidence was found to support the hypothesis that preheating can improve the hardness of resin composites.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe and identify the phases of amalgam and to know the transformation of microstructure in the set amalgam by lapse of time. In this study, shofu spherical-D alloy was used. After trituration of amalgam alloy and mercury (Wig-L-Bug), it was filled in the stone dies. This specimens being polished and etched by usual method was observed under optical microscope using metallurgical microscope. And then X-ray diffractometer was used to analyze the phases contents and transformation of microstructure at $2{\frac{1}{2}}$ hours, 15 hours, 28 hours and 2 years after being amalgamated. The following results were obtained: 1. Shofu spherical-D alloy powder was composed of ${\gamma}$ phase, ${\epsilon}$phase and Ag-Cu eutectic phases. 2. ${\gamma}_2$ phases were appeared at $2{\theta}$ values ($32.0^{\circ}$ and $43.8^{\circ}$) in the amalgam which was analyzed at $2{\frac{1}{2}}$ hours and 15 hours after trituration with mercury. 3. In the amalgam at 28 hours, ${\gamma}_2$ phase was found at $2{\theta}$ value ($43.8^{\circ}$) at 35 hour, $r_2$ phase was appeared at $2{\theta}$ value $32.0^{\circ}$. 4. No ${\gamma}_2$ phases were observed in the 2 years old amalgam. But ${\eta}$ ($Cu_6Sn_5$) phases were found at $2{\eta}$ values $29.4^{\circ}$ and $42.4^{\circ}$.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of glassionomer cement against cut dentin surface which was treated with various surface cleaning agents. 48 freshly extracted human 3rd molars were ground flat through the enamel into the dentin using 600 grit silicone carbide paper under a flow of water. The were divided into four groups by the following cleaning procedure on cut dentin surface; Group I : No surface treatment after grinding with 600 grit silicone carbide paper as control group Group II : Surface treatment with 50% citric acid for 30 seconds. Group III : Surface treatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds. Group IV : Surface treatment with 10% poly acrylic acid for 30 seconds. The specimens in 4 groups were immersed in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing after cleanising with water-spray and drying with air. Bond strength was measured with Instron Universal Testing Machine (Autograph S-100, Shimadzu, Kyoto, JAPAN). The results were as follows: 1. The bond strengths of group II, III & IV were not seemed to be shown more significant improvement than a group I. 2. The bond strengths in groups which were treated with 50% citric acid, 37% phosphoric acid and 10% polycrylic acid, were ranked 24.70kg/$cm^2$, 22.02kg/$cm^2$ and 31.13kg/$cm^2$, but its difference was not significant, statistically.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the speed of grinding and coolants on mercury vaporization during amalgam removal. Forty amalgam filled stone dies were stored at $37^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity for 7 days prior to the beginning of the mercury vapor experiment and were divided into 4 different groups; In Group I; Used by high speed without coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group II; Used by high speed with coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group III; Used by low speed without coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group IV; Used by low speed with coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. The amalgam specimens were removed in a 30-second time period and mercury vapor was collected with membrane filter at 27mm from the site of removal and 45 degree above there. Samples in Group II, IV were removed with coolant spray at a flow rate of 30 ml/min with high-velocity evacuator. Mercury vapor collected membrane filter was analysed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer using cold vapor method. The results were as follows; 1. The mercury vapor levels were obtained all of the Groups. 2. The mercury vapor levels of the Group II, IV (with coolant & evacuator) were less than that of the Group I, III (without coolant & evacuator). 3. The highest mercury vapor level recorded during amalgam removal procedure was Group I (used by high speed without coolant & evacuator) and its record was $0.78{\pm}0.09\;mg/m^3$, which exceed the T.L.V. by 15 times. 4. The mercury vapor level of the Group IV (used by low speed with coolant & evacuator) was more than that of the Group II (used by high speed with coolant & evacuator), but its difference was not significant, statistically. • Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of dentin pretreatment with silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microshear bond strength (${\mu}SBS$) durability of different adhesives to dentin. Materials and Methods: Occlusal surfaces of 120 human molars were ground to expose flat dentin surfaces. The specimens were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 20). Three groups (A, B, and C) were bonded with Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) and the other groups (D, E, and F) were bonded with Clearfil SE Bond (SEB). Dentin was pretreated with CHX in groups B and E, and with SNPs in groups C and F. The specimens were restored with Z250 composite. Half of the bonded surfaces in each group underwent ${\mu}SBS$ testing after 24 hours and the other half was tested after 6 months of water storage. Results: SNP application was associated with a higher ${\mu}SBS$ than was observed in the CHX and control groups for SEB after 24 hours (p < 0.05). A significantly lower ${\mu}SBS$ was observed when no dentin pretreatment was applied compared to dentin pretreatment with CHX and SNPs for SB after 24 hours (p < 0.05). The ${\mu}SBS$ values of the 6-month specimens were significantly lower than those obtained from the 24-hour specimens for all groups (p < 0.05). This decrease was much more pronounced when both adhesives were used without any dentin pretreatment (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SNPs and CHX reduced the degradation of resin-dentin bonds over a 6-month period for both adhesive systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different polishing procedures on the surfaces of composite resins. Two-paste type comosite restorative resin (Hipol) was selected for this study. 70 cavities prepared on the plaster-stone dies, 6mm in diameter and 2mm in depth, was filled with composite resin according to the manufacturer's specifications and by polymerizing against mylar strips. The polymerized composite resin specimens were polished (surface finished) by using 6 polishing devices; white stones, diamond finishing points, 12-fluted carbide finishing burs, green stones, sand paper disks, and Quasite rubber disk after polished with sand paper disks and green stones. A profilometer (Bendix type) was used to record in microinches the surface roughness of each surface finished composite resin specimens. The results were as follows. 1. The best finished surface that can be obtained is a surface formed by the mylar matrix strip 2. The white stones produced the smoothest surface in the experimental group. 3. The green stones produced the roughest surface in the experimental group. 4. It was proved that the gradual use of finishing instruments from a rough one to fine ones reduced the surface roughness.

  • Objectives: The aims of this study were to conduct a systematic review of the microtensile bond strength (${\mu}TBS$) of multi-mode adhesives to dentin and to perform a meta-analysis to assess the significance of differences in the ${\mu}TBS$ of one of the most commonly used universal adhesives (Scotchbond Universal, 3M ESPE) depending on whether the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode was used. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was performed of MEDLINE/PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost. Laboratory studies that evaluated the ${\mu}TBS$ of multi-mode adhesives to dentin using either the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were selected. A meta-analysis was conducted of the reviewed studies to quantify the differences in the ${\mu}TBS$ of Scotchbond Universal adhesive. Results: Only 10 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Extensive variation was found in the restorative materials, testing methodologies, and failure mode in the reviewed articles. Furthermore, variation was also observed in the dimensions of the microtensile testing beams. The meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference between the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes for Scotchbond Universal adhesive (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Multi-mode 'universal' adhesives can achieve substantial bonding to dentin, regardless of the used modes (either etch-and-rinse or self-etch).

  • Streptococcus mutans were isolated from dental plaques of carious lesions of 4 patients on mitis-salivarius agar medium. Three patients known to harbor S. mutans in their dental plaques. Identification of the isolated S. mutans was established by colonial morphology on mitis-salivarius agar medium, the fermentation of mannitol and sorbitol, and confirmed by agglutinating reaction with home made anti-S. mutans NCTC 10449 (serotype c) antiserum. Of the isolated S. mutans, one strain (P2-1) showed strong agglutinating reaction with antiserum, another strain (P1-2) showed weak agglutinating reaction. P2-1 strongly adhered to the wall of the test tube containing 5% sucrose broth, while p1-2 weakly colonized on the wall of the test tube. Biotyping of the isolated S. mutans based on the fermentation of mannitol, sorbitol, raffinose and melibiose, and the production of ammonia from L-arginine, and the inhibition of acid production by bacitracin. Biochemical characteristics of P2-1 strain correlated with the recognized biotype c, pl-2 strain resembled biotype d of S. mutans.
