Male red-spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, use chemical cues to locate and select potential mates. To investigate whether large and small males respond differentially to chemical cues from conspecifics, we conducted a series of two-choice Y-maze tests with odorant stimuli from two large females (LF/LF), one large versus one small female (LF/SF), and one large female placed with four males versus one small female (LF+4M/SF). We found that males responded more rapidly in a LF/LF choice situation than in those involving LF/SF or LF+4M/SF. In addition, small males chose more quickly than did large males. These results suggest that both body size and odorant context affect the speed of odorant responses. By responding differentially to conspecific chemical cues, small males may arrive earlier at a courting area, increasing their chances of successfully guarding and mating with a female.

The sensory function of the trigeminal nerve is to provide tactile, proprioceptive, and nociceptive afference by chemical stimulation. Various physical responses of the trigeminal nerve to stimuli help to defend against harmful substances. Recently, many studies have been conducted on solitary chemoreceptor cells innervated by trigeminal nerve. Most volatile organic compounds stimulate both the olfactory and trigeminal nervous systems. In general, the trigeminal nervous system is less sensitive than the olfactory nervous system. Studies have shown that sensation of the trigeminal nerve by chemical stimulation results in inhibition of olfaction. This indicates that the olfactory and trigeminal nerves interact with each other in the central nervous system. It is important to study various noxious stimuli acting on the trigeminal nerve in modern society where environmental concerns are intensifying.
Metal-oxide-based semiconductor gas sensors are widely used because of their advantages, such as high response and simple sensing mechanism. Recently, with the rapid progress in sensor networks, computing power, and microsystem technology, sensor applications are expanding to various fields, such as food quality control, environmental monitoring, healthcare, and artificial olfaction. Therefore, the development of highly selective gas sensors is crucial for practical applications. This article reviews the developments in novel sensor design consisting of sensing films and physical and chemical filters for highly selective gas sensing. Unlike conventional sensors, the sensor structures with filters can separate the sensing and catalytic reactions into independent processes, enabling selective and sensitive gas sensing. The main objectives of this study are directed at introducing the role of various filters in gas-sensing reactions and promising sensor applications. The highly selective gas sensors combined with a functional filter can open new pathways toward the advancement of high-performance gas sensors and electronic noses.

Mammalian genomes are well established, and highly conserved regions within odorant receptors that are unique from other G-protein coupled receptors have been identified. Numerous functional studies have focused on specific conserved amino acids motifs; however, not all conserved motifs have been sufficiently characterized. Here, we identified a highly conserved 18 amino acid sequence motif within transmembrane domain seven (CAS-TM7) which was identified by aligning odorant receptor sequences. Next, we investigated the expression pattern and distribution of this conserved amino acid motif among a broad range of odorant receptors. To examine the localization of odorant receptor proteins, we used a sequence-specific peptide antibody against CAS-TM7 which is specific to odorant receptors across species. The specificity of this peptide antibody in recognizing odorant receptors has been confirmed in a heterologous in vitro system and a rat-based in vivo system. The CAS-TM7 odorant receptors localized with distinct patterns at each region of the olfactory epithelium; septum, endoturbinate and ectoturbinate. To our great interests, we found that the CAS-TM7 odorant receptors are primarily localized to the dorsal region of the olfactory bulb, coinciding with olfactory epithelium-based patterns. Also, these odorant receptors were ectopically expressed in the various non-olfactory tissues in an evolutionary constrained manner between human and rats. This study has characterized the expression patterns of odorant receptors containing particular amino acid motif in transmembrane domain 7, and which led to an intriguing possibility that the conserved motif of odorant receptors can play critical roles in other physiological functions as well as olfaction.
For having good therapeutic value, putting the ideal of diagnosis and treatment based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs[辨證施治] into practice is very important, so the Eastern Medicine's peculiar diagnosis without interference by the western medical diagnosis is very important. The peculiar method of Eastern Medicine's diagnosis is four methods of diagnosis(四診法), a joint term for inspection, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation, pulse feeling and palpation. In the process of interrogation[問診], from analyzing the perspiration phase, doctor can get various physical information. Especially perspiration from particular region can be a clue for founding focus or cause of disease. This thesis divide the phase of perspiration into eight bodily region, perspiration from all body, head, face, back, chest and armpit, stomach, pubic region and lower part, hands and feet, and inquire the possible causes and principles of these perspirations. In conclusion, the regional perspiration can be a clue point out the origin of fever and condition of Gi(氣) flow. Perspiration from head, back, chest and armpit, hands and feet means that certain fever cannot extend to the outside of body, and at the same time, means the Gi(氣) flow of outside is being intercepted. So the perspirations from that region become an object of medical treatment.
An evaluation system for an electronic-nose concept using three types of metal oxide gas sensors that react similarly to the human olfactory cells was constructed for the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of aroma fragrances. Four types of aroma fragrances (lavender, orange, jasmine, and Roman chamomile), which are commonly used in aromatherapy, were evaluated. All the gas sensors reacted remarkably to the aroma fragrances and the good correlation of r=0.58-0.88 with the aromatic odor intensities by olfaction was confirmed. From the results of the analysis of an electronic-nose concept for classifying the characteristics of aroma oil fragrances, aroma oils could be classified using the fragrance characteristics and oil extraction methods with the cumulative variability contribution rate of 95.65% (F1: 69.65%, F2: 26.03%) by principal component analysis. In the pattern recognition based on the artificial neural network, the four aroma fragrances were 100% recognized through the training data of 56 cases (70%) out of 80 cases, and the pattern recognition rate was 57.1%-71.4% through the validation and testing data of 24 cases (30%). The pattern recognition success rate through all confusion matrices was 82.1%, indicating that the classification of aroma oil fragrances using the three types of gas sensors was successful.
Wooden structures in Korea are usually damaged by some insects such as termites, wasps, cigarette beetles, powder-post beetles. Especially, the termites inhabiting in Korea are the subterranean termites, Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis Morimoto, that make colonies in underground, therefore it is difficult to predict and control substantial infestations in advance. Accordingly, to enable inspectors to locate the termite infestations before the extensive damage occurs, the pest management industry has begun using several elaborate tools and making the various effect to inspect areas hard to access through a visual inspection. Recently detector dogs were adopted as one of those tools. Detector dogs are useful for locating subterranean termites because they use their acute olfaction rather than vision. We also have used detector dogs to locate termites and investigated 270 buildings from 31 sites since 2007. According to the results, while 144 buildings (53.4%) were in good condition with no damage by termites, 80 buildings (29.6%) were found out to be damaged by termites through visual inspection and detector dog. So it is expected to control termites according to the conservation status if detector dogs are well trained to discriminate live termites from fecal pellets by termites.
The word "Sajeung(死證)" in "Huangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" includes a warning to lead to death if it is treated wrongly as well as a definite diagnosis saying that it is impossible to care diseases. A disorder condition of the body means that the balance of Eum-yang(陰陽) are broken or O-haeng(五行) doesn't have a good circulation. The prediction to progress is very important as much as decision of whether it is Sajeung or not because it can be changed by the time of day or night and also by changes of the seasons. In addition, according to the relations between Sangsaeng(相生) and Sanggeuk(相克) of O-haeng patients' diseases fall into a dangerous condition at the time under control. But sometimes it can be a severe illness even they are full of vigor. When living and dying has to be determined, it is emphasized the significance of inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiring and palpation(望聞問切法). Especially this is the key point to study people's face and pulse.
Time and cost-effective production of next-generation sequencing data has enabled the performance of population-scale comparative and evolutionary studies for various species, which are essential for obtaining the comprehensive insight into molecular mechanisms underlying species- or breed-specific traits. In this study, the evolutionary and functional analysis of Korean native pig (KNP) was performed using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data by comparative and population genomic approaches with six different mammalian species and five pig breeds. We examined the evolutionary history of KNP SNPs, and the specific genes of KNP based on the uniqueness of non-synonymous SNPs among the used species and pig breeds. We discovered the evolutionary trajectory of KNP SNPs within the used mammalian species as well as pig breeds. We also found olfaction-associated functions that have been characterized and diversified during evolution, and quantitative trait loci associated with the unique traits of KNP. Our study provides new insight into the evolution of KNP and serves as a good example for a better understanding of domestic animals in terms of evolution and domestication using the combined approaches of comparative and population genomics.
