  • ZnO was synthesized according to the transformation behavior and crystallization conditions of Zn-intermediate obtained by zinc sulfate as a precursor and NaOH, Na2CO3 as a alkali agents. For ZnO crystallization, Zn4(OH)6SO4·H2O and Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2·H2O as a Zn-intermediate were calcined at 400℃ and 800℃ for 1 h, respectively, based on decomposition temperature from TGA. Zn4(OH)6SO4·H2O was confirmed to have mixed Zn4(OH)6SO4·H2O and ZnO at 400℃, and was completely thermally decomposed at 800℃ to form ZnO phase. The prepared Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2·H2O as a Zn-intermediate by the reaction with Na2CO3 was transformed to a complete ZnO crystallization over 400℃. Nano-sized ZnO can be synthesized at a relatively lower calcination temperature through the reaction with Na2CO3.

  • We investigated the carbon monoxide (CO) gas-sensing properties of nanostructured Al-doped zinc oxide thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots (ZnO/Au thin films). The Al-doped ZnO thin film was deposited onto the structure by rf sputtering, resulting in a gas-sensing element comprising a ZnO-based active layer with an embedded Pt/Ti electrode covered by the self-assembled Au nanodots. Prior to the growth of the active ZnO layer, the Au nanodots were formed via annealing a thin Au layer with a thickness of 2 nm at a moderate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that the ZnO/Au nanostructured thin film gas sensors showed a high maximum sensitivity to CO gas at $250^{\circ}C$ and a low CO detection limit of 5 ppm in dry air. Furthermore, the ZnO/Au thin film CO gas sensors exhibited fast response and recovery behaviors. The observed excellent CO gas-sensing properties of the nanostructured ZnO/Au thin films can be ascribed to the Au nanodots, acting as both a nucleation layer for the formation of the ZnO nanostructure and a catalyst in the CO surface reaction. These results suggest that the ZnO thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots are promising for practical high-performance CO gas sensors.

  • We prepared Ni and Pd-modified $TiO_2@SiO_2$ core-shell nanostructures and then analyzed them by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction crystallography, FT-IR and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. In addition, their CO oxidation performance was tested by temperature-programmed mass spectrometry. The CO oxidation activity showed an order of Ni-$TiO_2@SiO_2$ ($900^{\circ}C$) < Ni-$TiO_2@SiO_2$ ($90^{\circ}C$) < Ni-$TiO_2@SiO_2$ ($450^{\circ}C$) in the first CO oxidation run, and greatly improved activity in the same order in the second run. The $T_{10%}$ (the temperature at 10% CO conversion) corresponds to the CO oxidation rate of $2.8{\times}10^{-5}$ molCO $g{_{cat}}^{-1}s^{-1}$. For Ni-$TiO_2@SiO_2$ ($450^{\circ}C$), the $T_{10%}$ was observed at $365^{\circ}C$ in the first run and at $335^{\circ}C$ in the second run. For the Pd-$TiO_2@SiO_2$ ($450^{\circ}C$), the $T_{10%}$ was observed at a much lower temperature of $263^{\circ}C$ in the first CO oxidation run, and at $247^{\circ}C$ in the second run. The CO oxidation activities of transition metal modified $TiO_2@SiO_2$ core-shell nanostructures presented herein provide new insights that will be useful in developing catalysts for various environments.

  • In this study, we prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with large surface area by hydrothermal synthesis. In order to optimize the processing conditions for spinel NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with large surface area, experimental variables including concentration of Ni and Co precursor, reaction time, and temperature for post-heat treatment were evaluated. Optimized conditions for spinel NiCo2O4 with large surface area were [Ni]/[Co] 1:2 ratio, reaction time for 12 h, and post-heat treatment at 400℃. To investigate the feasibility as potential application for glucose sensor, electrochemical tests of the prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles in response to glucose was performed, which suggests that the NiCo2O4 can be suitable for a non-enzymatic-based electrochemical glucose sensor based on its high sensitivity and selectivity for glucose detection.

  • The oxidation of carbon monoxide by gaseous oxygen in the presence of a powdered $Nd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$ solid solution as a catalyst has been investigated in the temperature range from 150$^{\circ}$C to 300$^{\circ}$C under various CO and $O_2$ partial pressures. The site of Sr substitution, nonstoichiometry, structure, and microstructure were studied by means of powder X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The electrical conductivity of the solid solution has been measured at 300$^{\circ}$C under various CO and $O_2$ partial pressures. The oxidation rates have been correlated with 1.5-and 1.2-order kinetics with and without a $CO_2$ trap, respectively; first-and 0.7 order with respect to CO and 0.5-order to $O_2$. For the above reaction temperature range, the activation energy is in the range from 0.25 to 0.35 eV/mol. From the infrared spectroscopic, conductivity and kinetic data, CO appears essentially to be adsorbed on the lattice oxygens of the catalyst, while $O_2$ adsorbs as ions on the oxygen vacancies formed by Sr substitution. The oxygen vacancy mechanism of the CO oxidation and the main defect of $Nd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$ solid solution are supported and suggested from the agreement between IR data, conductivities, and kinetic data.

  • A dual-phase ceramic membrane consisting of gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) as an oxygen ion conducting phase and $MnCo_2O_4$ as an electron conducting phase was fabricated by sintering a GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ powder mixture. The $MnCo_2O_4$ was found to maintain its spinel structure at temperatures lower than $1200^{\circ}C$. (Mn,Co)(Mn,Co)$O_4$ spinel, manganese and cobalt oxides formed in the sample sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ in an air atmosphere. XRD analysis revealed that no reaction phases occurred between GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ at $1200^{\circ}C$. The electrical conductivity did not exhibit a linear relationship with the $MnCo_2O_4$ content in the composite membranes, in accordance with percolation theory. It increased when more than 15 vol% of $MnCo_2O_4$ was added. The oxygen permeation fluxes of the composite membranes increased with increasing $MnCo_2O_4$ content and this can be explained by the increase in electrical conductivity. However, the oxygen permeation flux of the composite membranes appeared to be governed not only by electrical conductivity, but also by the microstructure, such as the grain size of the GDC matrix.

  • A sulfuric acid leaching of $LiCoO_2$as cathodic active materials of lithium ion secondary batteries was investigated in terms of reaction variables. In the absence of a reducing agent, the extraction of cobalt was less than 40% in 2 M sulfuric acid at $75^{\circ}C$ instead of that of lithium could be almost 100% in the same conditions. To improve the Co extraction, hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent in the range 2~20 vol%. When over 10vo1% hydrogen peroxide was added, the extractions of both metals were improved to about 95%. It seems to be due to the reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) that can be readily dissolved. The extractions of Co and Li were increased with increasing $H_2$$SO_4$concentration and temperature, and amount of hydrogen peroxide and with decreasing of pulp density. The optimum leaching conditions were determined at $2 M H_2$$SO_4$concentration, $75^{\circ}C$ operating temperature, 100 g/L. initial pulp density, 20 vol% $H_2$$O_2$addition and 30 min.

  • In Korea, mackerel is the most preferred red fish commodity and has been increasingly consumed in chillstored fresh state rather than in frozen or salted fish. Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology as a replacement of air with low O2 and high CO2 concentration gas was applied in this study to preserve its freshness. Four MAP conditions of CO2(60):O2(30):N2(10), CO2(60):O2(5):N2(35), CO2(60):O2(0):N2(40), and CO2(30):O2(0):N2(70) were compared in quality preservation effect with air package used as Control. Three hundred grams mackerel fillets packaged in gas barrier tray were stored for duration of 10 days at 5℃. Quality was assessed in total aerobic bacterial count, pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), peroxide value (POV), texture, and surface color. High CO2 concentration MAPs (CO2(60):O2(30):N2(10), CO2(60):O2(5):N2(35), and CO2(60):O2(0): N2(40)) inhibited total aerobic bacteria growth in the fish fillets. MAPs of high CO2 concentration with O2 containment (CO2(60):O2(30):N2(10) and CO2(60):O2(5):N2(35)) showed a low TVB-N content through the storage. The treatments containing O2 above 20% (Control and CO2(60):O2(30):N2(10)) showed more accelerated increases in TBARS and POV than other treatments. The visual appearance was better for fillets in the packages of CO2(60):O2(5):N2(35), CO2(60):O2(0):N2(40), and CO2(30):O2(0):N2(70) than for those of other treatments. The MAPs of CO2(60):O2(5):N2(35) and CO2(60):O2(0):N2(40) are expected to be effective in keeping the freshness of mackerel fillets.

  • In this study, activated carbon (AC) as a carbon source was modified with different concentrations of cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$) to prepare a Co-AC composite, and it was used for the preparation of Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium oxysulfate (TOS) as the titanium precursor. The physicochemical properties of the prepared Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The photocatalytic treatments of organic dyes were examined under an irradiation of visible light with different irradiation times. $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine AC, which was $389\;m^2/g$. From the XRD results, the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites contained a mixturephase structuresof anatase and rutile, but a cobalt oxide phase was not detected in the XRD pattern. The EDX results of the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites confirmed the presence of various elements, namely, C, O, Ti, and Co. Subsequently, the decomposition of methylene orange (MO, $C_{14}H_{14}N_3NaO_3S$) and rhodamine B (Rh.B, $C_{28}H_{31}ClN_2O_3$) in an aqueous solution, respectively, showed the combined effects of an adsorption effect by AC and the photo degradation effect by $TiO_2$. Especially, the Co particles in the Co-AC/$TiO_2$ composites could enhance the photo degradation behaviors of $TiO_2$ under visible light.
