  • A Korean Type Biofilter system combined with a conventional anoxic tank(septic tank) process was investigated in regard to its feasibility for removing organic as well as nutrients from the rural wastewater in Korea. At recirculation, the removal rate in BOD and SS increased slightly as much as 93 and 95% compared with non-recirculation system. On the other hand, removal rates of the total nitrogen(T-N) and total phosphorous(T-P) in recirculation system increased significantly as much as 62 and 57%, respectively compared with non-recirculation system. The recirculation system provides sufficient treatment to improve the removal rate in T-N and T-P.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate of water purification in oxidation pond with filamentous algae mat. It is the water treatment process in the small rural streams to remove the organic materials and nutrients. We used the filamentous algae mat(FAM) which selectively predominate the filamentous algae to prevent the additional contamination by algae outflow. The removal efficiencies of COD, SS, T-N and T-P in Oxidation Pond with Filamentous Algae Mat were -2.5%, 84.7%, 63.9% and 89.2%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P which are nutrients index were high. Results of this study would help us to determine the possibility of using the water treatment on the contaminated small rural streams.

  • We investigated the most effective cutting interval for underwater nutrient removal through cut off the emergent part of hydrophytes at artificial vegetation island (AVR) which was installed for the purpose of water quality improvement in Lake Paldang. We divided the planting area of Phragmites japonica into three parts according to the cutting intervals. The shoot height and relative growth rate of P. japonica, nutrient contents and biomass of cut off P. japonica were measured at each cutting interval. The amount of nutrients which were removed through cut off at each cutting interval was calculated. P. japonica showed full growth, 80% and 60% of full growth before first cut off at three-months, two-months and one-month cutting interval condition respectively. Three-month cutting interval condition showed the largest biomass of cut off P. japonica and one-month cutting interval condition showed the least. However the cut off P. japonica showed the highest content of nutrients at one-month cutting interval condition and the least at three-month cutting interval condition. The amount of phosphorus and nitrogen removal at two-month cutting off condition is the largest among three cutting interval conditions indicating that cut off the emergent part of P. japonica every two months is the most effective to remove the nutrients from water at AVR in eutrophic lakes.

  • The co-culture system of microalgae and bacteria enables simultaneous removal of BOD and nutrients in a single reactor if the pair of microorganisms is symbiotic. In this case, nutrients are converted to biomass constituents of microalgae. This review highlights the importance and recent researches using symbiotic co-culture system of microalgae and bacteria in wastewater treatment, focusing on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. During wastewater treatment, the microalgae produces molecular oxygen through photosynthesis, which can be used as an electron acceptor by aerobic bacteria to degrade organic pollutants. The released $CO_2$ during the bacterial mineralization can then be consumed by microalgae as a carbon source in photosynthesis. Microalgae and bacteria in the co-culture system could cooperate or compete each other for resources. In the context of wastewater treatment, positive relationships are prerequisite to accomplish the sustainable removal of nutrients. Therefore, the selection of compatible species is very important if the co-culture has to be utilized in wastewater treatment.

  • This study was designed to elucidate the quantities of milk nutrients entrapped during cholesterol removal from milk by crosslinked $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD, 0.4~1.2%, w/v) and to evaluate the amounts of the residual $\beta$-CD in cholesterol-reduced milk treated by crosslinked $\beta$-CD. The content of lactose in the control milk (without treatment by crosslinked $\beta$-CD) was 4.86%, and the amounts of lactose entrapped by crosslinked $\beta$-CD ranged from 0.00 to 0.03%. The total amounts of the entrapped short-chain free fatty acid (FFA) and free amino acid (FAA) ranged from 0.03 to 0.09 ppm and from 0.28 to $0.71{\mu}mol/mL$, respectively. The amounts of the entrapped water-soluble vitamins (L-ascorbic acid, niacin, thiamine and riboflavin) ranged from 0.02 to 0.05 ppm, 0.01 to 0.06 ppm, 0.00 to 0.06 ppm and 0.01 to 0.06 ppm, respectively. The entrapped amounts of lactose, short-chain FFAs, FAAs and water-soluble vitamins were not remarkably affected by the concentrations of crosslinked $\beta$-CD (0.4~1.2%, w/v). Only very small amounts of residual $\beta$-CD in the cholesterol-removed milk were measured (1.22~3.00 ppm). Based on the data obtained from the present study, it was concluded that the amounts of entrapped nutrients were negligible during cholesterol removal from milk by crosslinked $\beta$-CD, and only trace amounts of residual $\beta$-CD were present in cholesterol-removed milk.

  • A pilot study was performed to examine the feasibility of intermittent slow sand filtration for agricultural reuse of reclaimed water. The effluent of biofilter for 16-unit apartment was used as influent to the slow sand filtration system at 0.6 $m^3$/day loading rate using 15 seconds spray in every 10 minutes on the about 1 $m^2$ surface area and 0.5 m depth. The influent concentrations of total coliform (TC), fecal coliform (FC) and E. coli were in the range of 10.000 MPN/100 mL. and they were reduced to less than 1,000 MPN/100 mL after filtration with average of 320, 270, and 154 MPN/100 mL, respectively, showing over 95 % removal. Turbidity and SS were improved effectively and their average concentration was reduced to 0.8 NTU and 1.7 mg/L, respectively, and removal rate was about 50 %. Average BOD and COD concentrations were also reduced substantially to 2.6 and 25.8 mg/L with about 55 and 21 % removal rate, respectively. Nutrients removal was relatively low and removal rate for T-N and T-P was low however, remaining nutrients might be beneficial and less concerned in case of agricultural reuse. The concentration of biofilter effluent used in this experiment was in the range of secondary treatment effluent but slightly stronger than the one from existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Therefore, intermittent slow sand filtration might be also applicable to the effluent from WWTPs as long as its agricultural reuse is available. Considering stable performance and effective removal of bacterial indicators as well as other water quality parameters, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, the intermittent slow sand filtration was thought to be an effective and feasible alternative for agricultural reuse of reclaimed water. This paper is a preliminary result from pilot study and further investigations are recommended on the optimum design parameters before full scale application.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of 2 constructed wetlands with different vegetation states (plumpton park wetland and Woodcroft park wetland) for reducing non-point source pollution from small watershed consisted of residential and agricultural area in suburban district of Sydney, Australia. The total nitrogen and phosphate removal efficiency of Plumpton park constructed wetland, composed of stable and dense vegetation, were 38.3% and 26.2% and Woodcroft park constructed wetland having still poor vegetation due to the short time to settle down transplanted plants after construction, showed relatively low removal efficiency of 20.2% and 14.0%. The removal efficiency of inorganic nutrients such as $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, $PO_4^{-3}$ were higher than total nitrogen and phosphate because plants and microorganisms in rhizosphere of constructed wetlands took up inorganic nutrients shortly. According to the type of wetland inflow, the nutrients removal efficiency of storm water flow was lower than base flow.

  • Aerated submerged bio-film (ASBF) pilot plant has been developed. The presented studies optimized an inexpensive method of enhanced wastewater treatment. The objectives of this research were to describe pilot scale experiments for efficient removal of dissolved organic and nitrogen compounds by using ASBF reactor in plug-flow reactor (PFR) and improve understanding of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds removal rates with dynamic relationships between heterotrophs and autotrophs in the fixed-film reactor. This research explores the possibility of enhancing the performance of shallow wastewater treatment lagoons through the addition of specially designed structures. This direct gas-phase contact should increase the oxygen transfer rate into the bio-film, as well as increase the micro-climate mixing of water, nutrients, and waste products into and out of the bio-film. This research also investigated the efficiency of dissolved organic matter and ammonia nitrogen removals in the ASBF. As it was anticipated, nitrification activity was highest during periods when the flow rate was lower, but it seemed to decline during times when the flow rate was highest. And ammonia nitrogen removal rates were more sensitive than dissolved organic matter removal rates when flow rates exceeded 2.2 L/min.

  • Biofilm process is preferred to activated sludge process in small domestic wastewater treatment plant because of its simplicity in operation and maintenance. Column reactor filled with waste ceramics and with waste plastics was used to remove pollutants in restaurant wastewater. COD removal at 18 hours of hydraulic retention time (HRT) gave 93.7%, COD removal during the experimental period, where maximum COD removal was observed. Under same condition, average removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 82.3% and 25.9%, respectively Organic and nitrogen were efficiently removed with the HRT of 18 hours or more.

  • In this study, the effect of electrolyte addition on the removal of organics and nutrients in electrochemical wastewater using a copper electrode, and the characteristics of the by-product of electrolysis were investigated. The removal of organics increased significantly as shorter reaction times upon the addition of chloride ion, and most of the electrolysis reaction was completed within 20 min. The reaction rate gradually increased in proportion to the $Cl^-$/COD ratio, whereas the highest removed mass of organic matter per mass of added electrolyte was observed at a $Cl^-$/COD ratio of 1. After the addition of electrolyte, significant removal of ammoniacal nitrogen was observed as a result of the enhanced generation of oxidizers such as hypochlorite. Excellent phosphorus removal was also achieved in a very short reaction time (within 2 min) by electro-coagulation. As the electrolysis progressed, the amount of by-product increased gradually, whereas a decrease of sludge volume index was observed after the addition of electrolyte. This indicated that the settling performance of the by-products was better, and their removal would be easily achieved.
