The purpose of this study was to applicate fundamental data for breeding new cultivar through selection of superior individuals and to investigate its nut characteristics in walnut hybrids. Selection of superior individuals with good nut qualities including high nut weight (NWT, >13g) and percentage of weight relative to total weight of nut (PWR, >50%) was carried out and then 4 promising individuals ($Sansung 4{\times}Concord-8,\;Concord{\times}Sansungl,\;Concord{\times}Sansung4\;and\;McKinster{\times}Punghan1$) were selected by quantitative characters. Especially width of pad of suture was main factor in selection of nut with high PWR (percentage of weight relative to total weight of nut) In addition, kernel length showed high correlation with kernel and nut weight. Thickness of septem (TOP) also had an effect on ease of kernel removal (EKR). In qualitative characters, there is a great difference among the individuals and cross combinations as well as showed simultaneously various characteristics in the same individual.
A wheel nut wrench is one of the hand tools used to loosen and tighten lug nuts on automobile wheels and it has generally a solid-type geometry for commercial vehicles. However, the solid-type wheel nut wrenches manufactured by hot forging processes exhibit several drawbacks such as heavy weight and rough surface finish. Thus, many efforts have been devoted to change the part geometry and improve the manufacturing process. For this purpose, the weight of the final product can be reduced drastically using a hollow tube as the initial stock, which can be manufactured by the more economical manufacturing process of cold forging. In this study, the cold forging of a hollow-type wheel nut wrench for commercial vehicles was designed based on the results of fundamental experiments and CAE analyses using the commercial finite element code DEFORM-3D. In addition, cold forging experiments were conducted on a special-purpose forming machine for hollow wheel nut wrenches in order to validate the designed process sequence. As results, it was found that the final products with a weight reduction of 39% and better surface appearance can be manufactured without any defect with the newly designed cold forging process.
This study wa performed to investigate the effect of dired powder of chestnut and acorn on lipid metabolism, antioxidative capacity and antithrombotic effect in rats. Fifty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 199$\pm$17g were blocked into nine groups according to their body weight. Rats were raised with diets containing only flesh or flesh with inner skin of 5% and 10% dried nut powders for four weeks. Food intake, body weight gain, food efficiency ratio and organ weight were no different among the experimental groups. The plasma and liver lipid levels of all the nut diet groups were lover than those of the control group. The nut diets showed hypolipidenic effect in the plasma and liver. Plasma and liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) concentrations were significantly decreased in all the nut diet groups. The plasma TBARS levels of the inner skin groups were significantly different from the control group dose-dependently. Superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity was significantly different among the experimental groups, and all the nut groups showed higher activity than the control group. There were significant differences in SOD activity between the chestnut and acorn groups and the chestnut groups showed higher erythrocyte SOD activity and the acorn groups showed higher liver SOD activity than the other groups. Whereas catalase and GSH-Px activities in the erythrocyte and liver of both nut groups showed a tendency to increase, they were not significantly different among the experimental groups. The bleeding time and whole blood clotting time tended to be extended by feeding both types of nut but they were not significantly different among the experimental groups. Production of TX $B_2$ and PG $F_{1{\alpha}}$ was no different among the experimental groups. These results suggest that chestnut and acorn diets have the effect of lowering plasma and liver lipid levels, inhibiting lipid peroxide formation and increasing antioxidative enzymes activity. Thus, it is plausible that chestnut and acorn could be recommended in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Sensory quality of pine nut gruel was investigated to determine the effects of processing conditions on its quality. Response surface methodology was applied to investigate effects of water volume and pine nut weight ratios to rice weight and heating time on the preference of pine nut gruel in terms of color, flavor, viscosity, taste, and overall acceptance. Results showed that processing conditions did not affect the color of pine nut gruel. Viscosity and overall acceptance were affected by the ratio of water volume to rice weight and heating time. $R^2$ of response surface regression equations were 0.6954, 0.8333 (p<0.05), 0.9668 (p<0.01), 0.8664 (p<0.05), and 0.8159 (p<0.10) for color, flavor, viscosity, taste, and overall acceptance respectively. No relationship was observed between color and overall acceptance. The relationship between viscosity and overall acceptance was the highest.

The study was performed to understand the effects of perilla and pine nut oils on hypercholesterolemia in cholesterol-fed male rats. All rats fed with the experimental diets for 3 weeks were decapitated to take serum. From the serum, the levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, free cholesterol, phospholipid, lipoprotein and glucose were measured, and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The experimental diets supplemented with perilla and pine nut did not influence on the body weight and on amount of food intake, but decreased significantly total cholesterol level by the rate of 22-30% 2. The perilla diets decreased the ${\beta}-/{\alpha}-lipoprotein$ value from 0.99 to 0.50-0.51, but the pine nut diets decreased to 0.68-0.69. 3. The 10% diets of perilla and pine nut decreased the triglyceride concentration by the rate of 11-14%, but it was not significant difference. 4. The perilla diets increased the HDL-cholesterol level by the rate of 53-72%, and the pine nut diets 72-92%, but both of these diets did not influence on the free cholesterol concentration. 5. The perilla diets decreased phospholipid concentration by the rate of 20-23%, but it was not significant difference. 6. The diets of 10% perilla and 5% pine nut decreased significantly the free fatty acid concentration by the rate of 48% and 34% respectively. 7. The diets of 10% perilla and pine nut decreased a little the glucose level, but it was not significant difference.
Oil was extracted from cashew nuts. The physicochemical parameters of the oil were determined. A chromatographic assay of the oil was carried out using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Seventeen compounds were detected: Phenol, Phenol 2-methyl-, Cyclohexene 4, 4-dimethyl-, m-Fluoro-2-diazoacetophenone 4-dimethyl-, Tetradecanoic acid, Phenol 4-octyl-, n-Hexadecanoic acid. Others are 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, Methyl stearate, Dodecanoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid (Z, Z, Z)-, Oleic acid, Octadecanoic acid, Tetracosanoic acid and 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester. Among the components are omega three and omega six essential free fatty acids. The rheological profiling and flow properties of cashew nut oil were determined using a Programmable Rheometer. Cashew nut oil exhibits slight dilatant behaviour at the low end of shear rate. The long chain and high molecular weight of its constituents controlled its rheology. Long-chained 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Tetracosanoic acid and methyl stearate, coupled with their high molecular weights are responsible for the shear thickening effect observed. Two models, Carreau-Yasuda and Ostwald-de Waele Power Law were employed to fit the rheological data. The Carreau-Yasuda model followed well the data.

Korean pine nut oil (PNO) has been reported to have favorable effects on lipid metabolism and appetite control. We investigated whether PNO consumption could influence weight gain, and whether the PNO-induced effect would result in an improvement of immune function in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. C57BL/6 mice were fed control diets with 10% energy fat from either PNO or soybean oil (SBO), or HFDs with 45% energy fat from 10% PNO or SBO and 35% lard, 20% PNO or SBO and 25% lard, or 30% PNO or SBO and 15% lard for 12 weeks. The proliferative responses of splenocytes upon stimulation with concanavalin A (Con A) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), Con A-stimulated production of interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon (IFN)-${\gamma}$, and LPS-stimulated production of IL-6, IL-$1{\beta}$, and prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) by splenocytes were determined. Consumption of HFDs containing PNO resulted in significantly less weight gain (17% less, P < 0.001), and lower weight gain was mainly due to less white adipose tissue (18% less, P = 0.001). The reduction in weight gain did not result in the overall enhancement in splenocyte proliferation. Overall, PNO consumption resulted in a higher production of IL-$1{\beta}$ (P = 0.04). Replacement of SBO with PNO had no effect on the production of IL-2, IFN-${\gamma}$, IL-6, or $PGE_2$ in mice fed with either the control diets or HFDs. In conclusion, consumption of PNO reduced weight gain in mice fed with HFD, but this effect did not result in the overall improvement in immune responses.
Cholesterol-lowering effect of pine nut on mice was investigated by examining changes in body weight, feed intake, and triglyceride, total cholesterol, high density liporotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) contents in mice plasma. Changes in body weight and feed intake between pre-designed experimental animal groups fed various contents of cholesterol and pine nut and control group fed basal diet were not significantly different. Food efficiency ratio of experimental groups fed higher than 10% pine nut was significantly higher than that of control group. Apparent differences in atherogenic index representing cholesterol-lowering effect in plasma were not found among all groups fed 0-20% pine nut. Inhibition activities of water and hexane extracts of pine nut on HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol esterase were examined in vitro. Hexane extract showed 66% inhibition effect on HMG-CoA reductase, whereas none was observed with water extract.

To provide basic data for variety improvement of chestnut cultivated in southern Korea, nut characteristics were investigated during 2008-2010. The number of burr by variety ranged from 37.7 in Kwangjujoyul to 183 in Juok. There were significant differences among variety in number of nuts per burr, and Idea had the least number of nuts per burr (1.2), while Sandae and Kwangeun had the largest (2.0). Nut weight also showed a distinct difference among variety, and Kwangdeok had the heaviest, while Kwangjujoyul had the lightest nut weight. Changbanggamyul showed the highest healthy nut rate of 89.9%, and Kunumi, Arima, Tsukuba, Kwangeun, and Pyeonggi had the rate of healthy nut of more than 80%. Sinyipyeong and Isseumo showed the high rate of rot nuts of 10.8 and 16.8%, which was needed to give attention to nut storage. Split pericarp percentage ranged from 0% in Changbanggamyul to 20.6% in Saeil, and that was above 15% in Sandae, Riheiguri, Juok, Kwangdeok but Kunumi, Arima, Tsukuba, Manseong, Changbanggamyul, Chuckpabyunii, Isseumo had the split pericarp percentage of less than 3%.
Lipids, extracted with chloroform-methanol (2:1 by vol.) and purified, from nut and leaf of Ginkgo biloba were identified and quantitatived by column, thin layer and gas liquid chromatography. The results were summarized as follow: 1) The total content of purified lipids in the nut and leaf on the fresh weight basis were 1.32% and 2.24%, respectively. 2) The lipid fractions in the nut obtained by silicic acid colum chromatography were found to be composed of about 89% neutral lipids and about 10% compound lipids, and in the leaf were found to be composed of about 28% neutral lipids and about 72% compound lipids. 3) Among the neutral lipid fractions, triglycerides (86.2%) were the major component in the nut, but esterified sterols (53.3%) were the major component in the leaf. 4) The main fatty acids of the total lipids were oleic(37.5%) and linoleic acid(44.5%) in the nut, but linolenic(45.2%) and palmitic acid (25.1%) were main fatty acids in the leaf. The patterns of fatty acid composition of the neutral lipid fractions in the nut and leaf were found to be similar, and oleic, linoleic and palmitic acid were the predominant. A large amount of oleic and linoleic acid in the glycolipid fractions was found in the nut compared with those in the leaf, but linolenic acid content in the leaf was significantly higher than in the nut. And patterns of fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fractions in the nut and leaf were found to be similar to that of glycolipid fractions.
