  • Purpose: This study was to measure and identify the differences of perceived confidence in practice of core basic nursing skills performed by new graduate nurses in Korea. Methods: The tool used in this study was a questionnaire for measuring the confidence in 20 items of core basic nursing skills which was structured based on Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education tool. 231 new graduate nurses participated in this study. The reliability of this questionnaire had Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ .918. Results: Subjects who experienced simulation education and standard patient education were 86.6% and 35.9%, respectively. Item enema intervention, tracheostomy care, and blood transfusion showed low practice confidence level. These items showed significant differences on whether the subjects experienced simulation and clinical practicum or not. Conclusion: Developing and managing clinical education program under deep cooperation between practicum agency and clinical instructor are needed. Simulation practicum will complement insufficient core basic nursing skills between newly graduated nurses before they allocate at the clinical department.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of simulation-based education using high-fidelity simulator and standardized patient in nursing care for children with fever on nursing students. Methods: A total of 166 senior nursing students who completed pediatric nursing practicum courses participated in this study. The single group study design with pretest and posttest was used. The simulation education was provided for 200mins including orientation, simulation preparation, simulation practicum, and debriefing. Pre and post surveys were performed using questionnaires on clinical performance competency, communication skills, critical thinking disposition and self-confidence. Results: The mean scores of clinical performance competency (t=-2.56, p<.05), communication skills (t=-6.39, p<.001), critical thinking disposition (t=-3.43, p<.001), and self-confidence (t=-3.72, p<.001) in posttest were significantly higher than those in pretest. Also, clinical performance competency in nursing care for children with fever has significant relationships with communication skills, critical thinking disposition and self-confidence. Conclusion: The results indicate that simulation-based education using high-fidelity simulator and standardized patient is an effective strategy for improving clinical performance competency, communication skills, critical thinking disposition and self-confidence in nursing students. Further study is needed to verify the effects.

Methods: This study targeted 181 third- and fourth- year nursing students. Data were collected from May 20-25, 2024, and analyzed using SPSS software (version 29.0), employing descriptive statistics, t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Sobel test was used to determine the statistical significance of the mediating effects of communication ability. Results: Nursing students' problem-solving abilities were significantly and positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.35, p<.001) and communication skills (r=.33, p<.001). Self-efficacy was significantly and positively correlated with communication skills (r=.56, p<.001). Communication skills had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between self-efficacy and problem-solving ability (Z=4.24, p<.001), explaining 51% of the variance. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop a curriculum and intervention programs to enhance the self-efficacy and communication skills and improve the problem-solving abilities of nursing students.

Scenarios to train SP and checklists to evaluate the students''competence were developed by our research team. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive analysis t-test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ using SPSS WIN 21.0 Program. Results: The simulation practicum using a standardized patient was conducted based on four steps, namely, selections of scenario modules, standard patient training, implementation, and evaluation. The differences between the pre and post-test scores of problem-solving skills(t=-2.94, p=.005) and clinical competency(t=-2.84, p=.007) were statistically significant. But communication skill(t=-.32, p=.747) and critical thinking(t=-.68, p=.498) was not different in group. Conclusion: Standardized patient simulation in nursing education may be useful the improvement of problem-solving skills and clinical competency.

  • Purpose: To study the internal psychological conflicts among nursing students during an infection control protocol carried out in the hospital by measuring their observation skills and performance during clinical training. Methods: Investigation of both pre- and post- infection control was conducted using questionnaires for clinical infection practices. We identified and evaluated the students' observation skills, clinical performance, clinical perception, and internal conflict regarding clinical infection control. We also interviewed the students as part of our study. Results: Among parameters such as clinical performance, observation skills, clinical perception, and internal conflict, the average observation skills (t=5.49, p<.001) were significantly lower, while internal conflict among students (t=-7.23, p<.001) was significantly higher than expected prior to clinical training. Generally, there was a negative correlation between observation skills and internal conflict in every aspect of infection control practice (r=-.281, p=.031). Internal conflict was significantly higher than expected in the context of hand hygiene (t=-2.135, p=.037), personal hygiene (t=-3.48, p=.002), and ventilator management (t=-3.69, p<.001). Clinical performance of students in the context of hand hygiene (t=4.69, p<.001), personal hygiene (t=2.06, p=.044), and ventilator management (t=2.68, p<.001) was significantly lower than expected prior to clinical training. Conclusion: Our findings showed that internal psychological conflict is higher when infection control practices are observed or performed to a lesser degree. Therefore, reinforcing education regarding infection control among students, such as developing a systematic program, or consecutive training and monitoring, is suggested.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and coping skills among middle school students. Method: The participants were 674 students in three middle schools in GyeongGi-Do. The data were collected from June 10 to 20, 2005. The instruments used were the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Ways of Coping Checklist. The data were analyzed using the SPSS-Win 12.0 program. Result: Self-esteem showed a significant positive correlation with positive coping skills (r= .162. p= .000). As for the positive coping skills, there was a significant difference by grade (F= 4.69, p= .010), relationship with parent (F=4.036, p= .02), and relationship with siblings (F=3.902, p= .02). As for the negative coping skills, there was a significant difference by grade (F=3.05, p= .04), condition of living with parents (F=3.559, p= .02), economic status (F=3.736, p= .02), relationship with sibling (F=3.408, p= .03), and troubling matters (F=5.422, p= .005). Conclusion: Positive coping skills may be effective for adjustment because they positively related to self-esteem. Self-esteem and coping skills should be considered when an adolescent's mental health enhancement program is designed.

  • Purpose: This research was conducted to identify major factors that influence competency for nursing students in basic nursing skills. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 290 first year students in one college of nursing. The instrument tools included motivation for admission to nursing, concern about fundamentals of nursing, perceived importance of fundamentals of nursing, level of active participation in fundamentals of nursing, number of times to use open Lab, Lab class satisfaction, self-efficacy, self-evaluation and student attitude. Results: There was no significant correlation between competency in basic nursing skills and motivation for admission to nursing, concern about fundamentals of nursing, perceived importance of fundamentals of nursing, or number of times to use open Lab. Competency in basic nursing skill in these students showed a significantly positive correlation to Lab class satisfaction, self-efficacy, self-evaluation, student attitude and level of active participation in fundamentals of nursing. The major factors that influenced competency in basic nursing skills for nursing students were student attitude, self-efficacy and number of times to use open Lab. These factors explained 15.5% of the variance in competency. Conclusion: Basic nursing skill practice education programs should be developed to improve self-efficacy and active participation.
