Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe motivational factors and barriers which nurses experience while preparing for the NCLEX-RN Exam. Method: Data was collected from July 5 to August 28, 2002 using self-administered open questionnaires. A total 144 nurses preparing for the NCLEX-RN Exam participated in this study. Descriptive statistics were used and respondents' statements were analyzed using content analysis. Result: The motivation for taking the NCLEX-RN Exam was for a new adventure (23.7%), better working conditions and benefits (20.4%), children's education (14.5%), to study aboard (13.8%), economic issues (11.8%), and career issues (11.2%). The barriers while preparing for the NCLEX-RN Exam were studying in English (35.3%), fatigue (21.8%) limited time (16.0%), lack of information (8.3%), complicated documentation (5.1%), and cultural differences (4.5%). Conclusion: The result suggests that it is imperative to improve working conditions and benefits for nurses in Korea to prevent the brain drain of highly experienced nurses to other countries. It is also essential to develop strategies to minimize the barriers to support nurses preparing for the NCLEX-RN Exam and promote jobs overseas.
Nurses are medical care providers most closely associated with the national health. Their works are subdivided and specialized, and it is such a factor making nurse's role more important, and with the appearance of specialized nurses, they have secured a position as an independent medical care provider. As the domain of nurse's service becomes broader, there are more accidents and disputes related to nurses. However, there are not many studies conducted on such problems, and even when medical disputes take place related to nurses, the court does not make consistent judgments as a matter of fact. Besides, as the ambiguity of nurse's range of service and the lack of nursing workforce work as a factor causing nurse's medical malpractice, more legal discussions and studies are required to seek proper solutions to such problems. Thus, as a plan to clarify legal issues likely to occur due to nurse's medical practice, this study classified nurse's work into medical assistance practice and other jobs based on their own independent judgments, and proposed establishing concrete regulations on the range of their work, while reviewing common problems extracted from precedents related nurse's medical malpractice. Moreover, while examining Japanese precedents related to the Act of Medical Service Personnel, Nurses and Midwives, which is the sole act of nurses in Japan, this study reviewed the necessity of revising the present nurse-related regulations in Medical Service Act, or enacting a sole act of nurses.

Purpose: The study was done to verify the effect size of the variables related to the emotional labor of nurses. Methods: A total of 47 article on variables related to the emotional labor of nurses and published from 2006 to 2014 were used for the meta-analysis. Results: Variables with the largest effect size related to emotional labor were identified as the variables of work task, organization and individual characteristics in descending order of effect size. The sub-factors with the greatest effect size in the work task variable were exhaustion and work commitment, while for organization variables, intention to change jobs had the largest effect size. For individual characteristics, physical symptoms had the largest effect size. Conclusion: The results of this study are meaningful as the first study to integrate research results on variables related to the emotional labor of Korean nurses, providing practical data for the management of emotional labor.
Purpose: This study was to identify the level of job stress and turnover intention and to explore the impact of job stress on turnover intention among emergency room (ER) nurses. Methods: With a correlational survey design, 155 emergency room nurses were recruited in D metropolitan city. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire including ER-related job stress, turnover intention, and subjects' characteristics from March 18 to March 26, 2013. Results: Overall mean score of job stress was $284.34{\pm}40.60$, indicating higher level of job stress. The highest job stress category was conflict related inside the hospital and transportation team, and followed by matters related the patient and the guardian, conflicts with doctors, and heavy workload. The average score of turnover intention was $15.41{\pm}3.68$, indicating higher intention to quit their jobs. There was a moderate level of positive correlation between job stress and turnover intention (r=.44, p<.001). Turnover intention was high when ER nurses had higher job stress (${\beta}$=.38), were female (${\beta}$=.22), and wished to move to another department (${\beta}$=.17). Conclusion: The most important factor of turnover intention was job stress among ER nurses. Strategies to lower turnover rate for ER nurses should be focused on seeking ways to reduce their job stress.
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the job performance efficiency of nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Additionally, the study aimed to provide a detailed method to improve the currently inefficient way in which nurses perform their jobs by differentiating the reference group of more efficient nurses, and to compare the characteristics of the more efficient group of nurses to those of the less efficient group of nurses. Methodology: This study evaluated the relative job performance efficiency of nurses by applying DEA to 43 nurses in the NICU. The input variables for the efficiency analysis were working career (years), time spent in direct nursing care (hours), overtime (hours), and job-related training (hours); the output variables were the job performance scores of professional practice, research, leadership, and education. Data were analyzed using SPSS IBM 23.0 and Open Source DEA (OSDEA). Findings: The relative job performance efficiency of the 43 nurses was 0.933, and 20 nurses were evaluated as more efficient. In addition, the study confirmed the possibility of improving the overall job performance efficiency by improving leadership, while controlling the current input variables. Lastly, the more efficient nurses had significantly higher job performance scores for research (t=2.028, p=0.049), leadership (t=2.036, p=0.048), and education (t=2995, p=0.005) than those who were less efficient. Practical Implications: It is suggested that job performance be evaluated using DEA to improve the overall job performance efficiency of NICU nurses. The analysis results from DEA for nurses becomes evidence in support of establishing individualized goals for each nurse, thus resulting in a foundation for systematic human resource management of nurses, and ultimately contributing to increase in the job performance efficiency of nurses.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among nursing work environment, job embeddedness, and turnover intention in order to provide basic data for efficient management of human resources in nursing organizations. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was conducted with 177 nurses who had worked for more than 6 months in five general hospitals on Jeju Island. A self-report questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: About 88% of the participants reported that they were considering a turnover plan because of overload in their jobs and poor salaries. Nursing work environment was significantly related to job embeddedness and turnover intention. Job embeddedness was significantly related to turnover intention. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that factors affecting turnover intention were the organizational embeddedness factors of organization fit and organization sacrifice. Conclusion: The results indicate that nurses' turnover intention is associated with nursing work environment and job embeddedness. To reduce nurses' turnover intention and improve nurses' retention, nurse managers should improve the nursing work environment and consider job embeddedness, particularly in relation to the organization fit and sacrifice.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting general hospital nurses' intention to stay in their jobs. Methods: A descriptive research design was used with a convenience sample of 286 nurses. Data were collected from March 15 to April 14, 2017using self-reported questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The mean scores for intention to stay, resilience, and emotional labor were 5.28 out of 8, 57.40 out of 100, and 3.23 out of 5, respectively. Intention to stay was positively correlated with overall career (r=.30), workplace (r=.18), shift work (r=-.20), position (r=.28), salary (r=.13), job satisfaction (r=.51), hospital satisfaction (r=.46), and resilience (r=.41). Factors influencing the intention to stay were job satisfaction and resilience, which explained 28% of the variance. Conclusion: Overall career, job satisfaction, and resilience are critical factors affecting general hospital nurses' intention to stay. Based on the findings of this study, efforts to improve nurses' job satisfaction and resilience should be implemented to mitigate the loss of this expert group among healthcare professionals.
In Korea, visiting nursing services in pubic health centers have been in place since 1991. The purpose of this study is to compare the job characteristics, job motivation and job performance between visiting nurses and other public health nurses. 196 subjects were sent mailed questionnaires from Aug. to Sep., 1997. The response rate was 65.3%. Data were analyzed by a SPSSWIN program with a t-test, $X^2-test$, ANCOVA. The results were as follows : 1. The level of job ability in visiting nurses was higher than that of other public health nurses, but it was an insignificant difference(t=1.5975, p=.2078). Among job characteristics, skill variety was significantly higher in other public health nurses(t=8.2121, p=.0046); autonomy and feedback were significantly higher in visiting nurses(t=8.1877, p=.0047/t=7.7026, p=.0085). 2. There was no significant difference in the level of job motivation(t=.6485, p=.4216) and in job performance between the two groups (t=2.7393, p=.0995). In job performance, general nursing and organizational jobs were significantly higher in other public health nurses (t=4.8486, p=.1288/t=9.4237, p=.0024). 3. It was reconfirmed that there was, a significant difference in the level of skill variety, autonomy and feedback in analyzing age and career as covariates. 4. Significant positive relationship was found in job characteristics and job motivation(r=.5488, p=.0000). No significant relationship was found in job characteristics and job performance(r=.0486, p=.498). Through these results, it was supported that there were differences in some of the job characteristics and job performance between visiting nurses and other public health nurses. Therefore, it is requested to redesign job standards, training programs and management styles focusing on the job characteristics of visiting nurses.
Purpose: This study evaluated a smoking education program in middle schools in Busan. School nurses and health teachers performing additional job development with a variety of human resources on smoking education for adolescents were investigated. Method: The subjects were obtained from 133 middle schools located in Busan, and data were collected from January 10, 2005 to February 19, 2005. The data was analyzed using the descriptive statistics, multiple response and t-test on SPSS 12.0 for Windows. Results: Schools that had school nurses undertook 67% of all smoking education programs. However, 78.3% of smoking education programs were undertaken in schools that used health teachers holding an additional job, those who had other jobs, and teachers in charge of school discipline. The health teachers holding an additional job reported that they had difficulty with smoking education due to a 'lack of professionalism' (t=-2.776, p=.006). In addition, the school nurses reported that 'they had insufficient time for non-smoking education' (t=2.440, p=.016). Conclusion: The results of this study show that school nurses should be in charge of the smoking education programs developed in the middle schools in Busan.
