Three methods for design sensitivity such as numerical differentiation, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis is exact, it is hard to implement for practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable for most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included especially in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis. Thus semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure for the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and computational technique is proposed, which evaluates the pseudo-load for design sensitivity analysis easily by using the design variation of corresponding internal nodal forces. Errors in semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis are examined and numerical examples are illustrated to confirm the reduction of numerical error considerably.
One of the major components for performance based seismic design is accurate estimation of critical seismic demand parameters. While nonlinear seismic analysis is the most appropriate analysis method for estimation of seismic demand parameters, this method is very time consuming and complex. Single mode pushover analysis method, N2 method and multi-mode pushover analysis method, modal pushover analysis (MPA) are two nonlinear static methods that have recently been used for seismic performance evaluation of few lateral load-resisting systems. This paper further investigates the applicability of N2 and MPA methods for estimating the seismic demands of ductile unstiffened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs). Three different unstiffened SPSWs (4-, 8-, and 15-storey) designed according to capacity design approach were analysed under artificial and real ground motions for Vancouver. A comparison of seismic response quantities such as, height-wise distribution of floor displacements, storey drifts estimated using N2 and MPA methods with more accurate nonlinear seismic analysis indicates that both N2 and MPA procedures can reasonably estimates the peak top displacements for low-rise SPSW buildings. In addition, MPA procedure provides better predictions of inter-storey drifts for taller SPSW. The MPA procedure has been extended to provide better estimate of base shear of SPSW.
In this article, one of the procedures to design viscous dampers proposed in literature is applied to 3D asymmetric-plan buildings, considering different distributions for the damping coefficients, which are assumed to be proportional to specific structural or response parameters. The main purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of different vertical and in-plan distributions of the damping coefficients of nonlinear viscous dampers for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings. For comparison purposes, all the distributions were applied utilizing both a simplified and an extended method for the 3D structures, where the simplified method takes into account only the translation in the seismic direction, and the extended method considers the translations along the two orthogonal directions together with the floor rotations. The proposed distributions were then applied to a typical case study involving an asymmetric-plan six-storey RC building. The effectiveness of the different distributions was examined through time-history analyses, assuming nonlinear behaviour for both the viscous dampers and the structural elements. The results of the nonlinear dynamic analyses were examined in terms of maximum and residual inter-storey drifts, peak floor accelerations and maximum damper forces.

OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) signals sutler serious nonlinear distortion in the nonlinear HPA(High Power Amplifier) because of high PAPR(Peak Average Power Ratio). Nonlinear distortion can be improved by a pre-distorter, but this pre-distorter is insufficient when the PAPR is very high in an OPFDM system. In this paper, a DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) transform technique is introduced for PAPR reduction. It is especially important to consider the memory effect of HPA for more precise predistortion. Therefore, in this paper, we consider two models, the TWTA(Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier) model of Saleh without a memory effect and the HPA memory polynomial model that has a memory effect. We design a pre-distorter and an adaptive pre-distorter that uses the NLMS(Normalized Least Mean Square) algorithm for the compensation of this nonlinear distortion. Without the consideration of a memory effect, the system performance would be degraded, even if the pre-distorter is used for the compensation of the nonlinear distortion. From the simulation results, we can confirm that the proposed system shows an improvement in performance.
The objective of this paper is to develop computer programs to aid in the design and analysis of control systems in which nonlinear characteristics exist. Control systems are dynamic systems, which can be described using various mathematical models. A convenient model for digital computer simulation is the state model in which described using a set of linear and non linear first order differential equations. The digital simulation was performed on a IBM PC/XT personal computer, and the computer language was BASIC. There are four possible configurations from which a user may choose. When running a program, the user is asked to enter the system parameters according to a specified control system configurations are; 1. A control system with a nonlinear element followed by a plant in a feedback configurations(NLSVF1). 2. A control system with a nonlinear device situated between two plants in a feedback configurations(NLSVF2). 3. A control system with a nonlinear element followed by a plant, followed by a the dealy in feedback configurations(TLAG). 4. A motor and load with a backlash nonlinearity between dynamic portions of the motor/load configurations (BACKLASH). The matrix from state equations are integrated using combination the trapezoidal method and fixed point iteration. Several cases which have nonlinearity were implemented on the computer and the results were discussed.

As sea state harsher in the ocean space, more large motion and wave loads occurs on ships hull by non-linear phenomena. To consider nonlinear effect on ships hull in the structural design verification, the direct calculation method with numerical approach is used rather than rule values for the reliable accuracy. In this paper, the non-linear wave loads analysis in time domain is performed by using a Rankine Panel Method together with numerical schemes. Linear calculations have been carried out based on DNV CSA-2 notation to generate the motion responses and wave loads of large ships. By short and long term analysis, the design wave amplitudes are selected for the nonlinear analysis. The maximum wave induced bending moment in hogging and sagging conditions are calculated in the nonlinear analysis. Also, the green water effect on the wave induced vertical bending moment was investigated. The results show the vertical bending moments are more influenced by green water in sagging condition than in hogging condition due to green water loading.
The study reports on the design and performance of two air-filled and two partial ethanol-filled photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structures with a tetra core for supercontinuum generation. The PCFs are nonlinear with ultra-flattened zero dispersion. Holes with smaller areas are used to create a tetra-core PCF structure. Ethanol is filled in the holes of smaller area while the larger holes of cladding region are airfilled. Optical properties including dispersion, effective mode area, confinement loss, normalized frequency, and nonlinear coefficient of the designed PCF structures are investigated via full vector finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. A PCF structure with lead silicate as wafer exhibits significantly better results than a PCF structure with silica as wafer. However, both structures report dispersion at a telecommunication wavelength corresponding to 1.55 ㎛. Furthermore, the PCF structure with lead silicate as wafer exhibits a very high nonlinear coefficient corresponding to 1375 W-1 km-1 at the same wavelength. This scheme can be used for optical communication systems and in optical devices by exploiting the principle of nonlinearity.

This paper presents a nonlinear observer design method for SOC(state-of-charge) estimation of Lithium polymer battery cell. The dynamic equation of the battery cell is modeled as a simple RC electrical circuit with a nonlinear voltage source and the parameters are obtained via nonlinear optimization. Using the sum of squares decomposition, the observer gain is designed such that the error dynamics is asymptotically stable and the decay rate is below the prescribed value. In order to illustrate the performance of the observer, a computer simulation is performed using the experimental data with the UDDS(urban dynamometer driving schedule) current profile.

For the testing of nonlinear power amplifiers, this paper suggests an approach to design optimized multisine signals that could be substituted for the original modulated signal. In the design of multisines, complex coefficients should be determined to mimic the target signal as much as possible, but very few methods have been adopted as general solutions to the coefficients. Furthermore, no solid method for the phase of coefficients has been proven to show the best resemblance to the original. Therefore, in order to determine the phase of multisine coefficients, a time-domain nonlinear optimization method is suggested. A frequency-domain-method based on the spectral response of the target signal is also suggested for the magnitude of the coefficients. For the verification, multisine signals are designed to emulate the LTE downlink signal of 10 MHz bandwidth and are used to test a nonlinear amplifier at 1.9 GHz. The suggested phase-optimized multisine had a lower normalized error by 0.163 dB when N = 100, and the measurement results showed that the suggested multisine achieved more accurate adjacent-channel leakage ratio (ACLR) estimation by as much as 12 dB compared to that of the conventional iterative method.
This paper suggests a method to design TSK(Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) fuzzy nonlinear control system for automatic steering system which contains the nonlinear component of ship's maneuvering equation. A TSk fuzzy model can be identified using input-output data and represent a nonlinear system very well. A TSK fuzzy controller can be designed systematically from a TSK fuzzy model because the consequent part of TSK fuzzy rule is a linear input-output equation having a constant term. Therefore, this paper suggests the method identifying the TSK fuzzy model and designing the TSK fuzzy controller based on the TSK fuzzy model for ship steering.
