  • Based on Reissner's mixed variational theorem (RMVT), the authors develop a semi-analytical finite element (FE) method for a three-dimensional (3D) bending analysis of nonhomogeneous orthotropic, complete and incomplete toroidal shells subjected to uniformly-distributed loads. In this formulation, the toroidal shell is divided into several finite annular prisms (FAPs) with quadrilateral cross-sections, where trigonometric functions and serendipity polynomials are used to interpolate the circumferential direction and meridian-radial surface variations in the primary field variables of each individual prism, respectively. The material properties of the toroidal shell are considered to be nonhomogeneous orthotropic over the meridianradial surface, such that homogeneous isotropic toroidal shells, laminated cross-ply toroidal shells, and single- and bi-directional functionally graded toroidal shells can be included as special cases in this work. Implementation of the current FAP methods shows that their solutions converge rapidly, and the convergent FAP solutions closely agree with the 3D elasticity solutions available in the literature.

  • This paper describes the performance evaluation of NHD(nonhomogeneity detector) for STAP(space-time adaptive processing) airborne radar according to various normalization methods in the nonhomogeneous clutter environment. In practice, the clutter can be characterized as random variation signals, because it sometimes includes signals with very large magnitude like impulsive signal due to the system environment. The received interference signals are composed of homogeneous and nonhomogeneous data. In this situation, NHB is needed to maintain the STAP performance. The normalization using the NHD result is an effective method for removing the nonhomogeneous data. The optimum normalization can be performed by a representative value considered with a characteristic of the given data, so we propose the K-means clustering algorithm. The characteristic of random variation data due to nonhomogeneous clutters can be considered by the number of clusters, and then the representative value for selecting the homogeneous data is determined in the clustering result. In order to reflect a characteristic of the nonstationary interference data, we also investigate the algorithm for a calculation of the proper number of clusters. Through our simulations, we verified that the K-means clustering algorithm has very superior normalization and target detection performances compared with the previous introduced normalization methods.

  • In this article, a scattering problem in a nonhomogeneous medium is formulated as an integral equation which contains boundary and volume integrals. The integral equation is solved for sufficiently small $$\mid$$\mid$1-p$\mid$$\mid$,$\mid$$\mid${k_i}^2-k^2$\mid$$\mid$\;and\;$\mid$$\mid${\nabla}p$\mid$$\mid$$ where $k,\;k_i$ and p the wave numbers and the density respectively.

  • Since many infinite horizon problems have infinite sequence of data to be considered, in general, it is impossible to express the optimal strategies finitely or to calculate them in finite time. This paper considers undiscounted nonhomogeneous deterministic infinite horizon problems. For those problems, we take a basic step to solve this class of infinite horizon problems optimally by giving a sufficient condition for a finite solution.

  • There are fruitful results on degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations recently following the idea of $Kru{\check{z}}kov^{\prime}s$ doubling variables device. This paper is devoted to the well-posedness of nonhomogeneous boundary problem for degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with spatially dependent second order operator, which has not caused much attention. The novelty is that we use the boundary flux triple instead of boundary layer to treat this problem.

  • In this paper, we first propose a modified OS CFAR detector called the order statistics cell averaging(OSCA) CFAR detector and anlyze its performance for a Rayleigh target in homogeneous backgrounds, clutter edges, and satistics smallest of(OSSO) CFAR detectors for a Rayleigh target to nonhomogeneous environments. Computer simulation results show that the OSCA CFAR detector has superior performance to OS, OSGO, and OSSO CFAR detectors in homogeneous and multiple target environments. And the proposed detector shows its robustness for fast detection because it requires falf the processing time of the OS CFAR detector.

  • In the field of population dynamics and chemical reaction the possibility or the existence of spatially and temporally nonhomogeneous solutions is a very important problem. For last 50 years or so there have been many results on the pattern formation of chemical reaction systems studying reaction systems with or without diffusions to explain instabilities and nonhomogeneous states arising in biological situations. In this paper we study time-dependent properties of a predator-prey system with functional response and give sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of stable limit cycles.

  • Bayesian approach using nonhomogeneous Poisson process is considered for modelling software reliability problem. The usefulness of the iterative sampling-based method increases greatly as the dimension of a problem increases. Maximum likelihood estimator and Gibbs estimator are derived. Model selection based on a predictive likelihood is studied. A numerical example is given.

  • The effects of nanotechnology and smartness on the buckling reduction of pipes are the main contributions of present work. For this ends, the pipe is simulated with classical piezoelectric polymeric cylindrical shell reinforced by armchair double walled boron nitride nanotubes (DWBNNTs), The structure is subjected to combined electro-thermo-mechanical loads. The surrounding elastic foundation is modeled with a novel model namely as orthotropic nonhomogeneous Pasternak medium. Using representative volume element (RVE) based on micromechanical modeling, mechanical, electrical and thermal characteristics of the equivalent composite are determined. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements and stress-strain relations as well as the charge equation for coupling of electrical and mechanical fields, the governing equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal. Based on differential quadrature method (DQM), the buckling load of pipe is calculated. The influences of electrical and thermal loads, geometrical parameters of shell, elastic foundation, orientation angle and volume percent of DWBNNTs in polymer are investigated on the buckling of pipe. Results showed that the generated ${\Phi}$ improved sensor and actuator applications in several process industries, because it increases the stability of structure. Furthermore, using nanotechnology in reinforcing the pipe, the buckling load of structure increases.

  • The plane elasticity problem of collinear cracks in a layered medium is investigated. The medium is modeled as bonded structure constituted from a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Along the bond line between the two dissimilar homegeneous constituents, it is assumed that as interfacial zone having the functionally graded, nonhomogeneous elastic modulus exists. The layered medium contains three collinear cracks, one in each constituent material oriented perpendicular to the nominal interfaces. The stiffness matrix formulation is utilized and a set of homogeneous conditions relevant to the given problem is readily satisfied. The proposed mixed boundary value problem is then represented in the form of a system of integral equations with Cauchy-type singular kernels. The stress intensity factors are defined from the crack-tip stress fields possessing the standard square-root singular behavior. The resulting values of stress intensity factors mainly address the interactions among the cracks for various crack sizes and material combinations.
