This study introduces a new approach to a falling ball viscometer by using a high speed motion camera to measure the viscosity of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids from the velocity-time data. This method involves capturing continuous photographs of the entire falling motion of the ball as the ball accelerates from the rest to the terminal velocity state. The velocity of a falling ball was determined from the distance traversed by the ball by examining video tape frame by frame using the marked graduations on the surface of the cylinder. Each frame was pre-set at 0.01. Glycerin 74% was used for Newtonian solution, while aqueous solutions of Polyacrylamide and Carboxymethyl Cellulose were for non-Newtonian solutions. The experimental viscosity data were in good agreements with the results obtained from a rotating Brookfield viscometer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the difference between the faller and the non-faller in the test for balance and fear of falling. This was also done to determine whether the balance and the fear of falling are correlated in the elderly. Method: Forty eight subjects participated in this study, who attended the senior center in Daegu. Prior to the test, demographic data was collected. As for the balance test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up & Go (TUG), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Functional Reach Test (FRT), and One Leg Stance (OLS) were used. For measuring the fear of falling, Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) were used. Independent t-test and Pearson's correlation was performed using PASW 18.0 for windows. Result: All balance tests, except OLS, and fear of falling could discriminate between the faller and the non-faller. There existed a significant correlation between some balance test and fear of falling (r=0.64~0.86). Conclusion: The findings indicate that assessing the falling in the elderly, there needs to be a consideration of multiple aspects including the fear of falling and not only the balance test.
The falling ball viscometer has been widely used for measuring the viscosity of the Newtonian fluids because of its simple theory and low cost. The use of the falling ball viscometer for measuring the non-Newtonian viscosity has been of interest to rheologists for some years. The analysis of the experimental results in a falling ball viscometer rest on Stokes law which yields the terminal velocity for a sphere moving through an infinite medium of fluids. An attempt to use the falling ball viscometer to measure the non-Newtonian viscosity in the intermediate shear rate ranEe was sucessfully accomplished by combining the direct experimental obserbations with a simple analytical model for the average shear-stress and shear rate at, the surface of a sphere. In the experiments with highly viscoelastic polyacrylamide solutions the terminal velocity was observed to be dependent on the time interval between the dropping of successive balls. The time-dependent phenomenon was used to determine characteristic diffusion times of the concentrated solutions of polyacrylamide.

In this study, the Non-Destructive Testing Equipment was introduced for the compaction control and the evaluation of pavements properties and the developing process was showed. Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD) is a system for performing non-destructive testing of pavement and the other foundation structures. The system develops forces from the acceleration caused by the arrest of a falling weight and these forces are transmitted onto the surface of a structure causing it to deflect much as it would due to the weight of a passing wheel load. The structure will bend downward and exhibit a deflection basin. FWD uses a set of velocity sensors to determine the amplitude and shape of the deflection basin. The deflection response, when related to the applied loading, can provide information about the strength and condition of the various elements of the test structure. In this study, a computer program was developed that can be used to evaluate pavement and foundation structures from the data produced by FWD. The Falling Weight Deflectometer, non-destructive testing equipment, is increasing used at the whole world.

In Korea, the seismic design of non-structural elements was interested by Earthquake of the 2016 Gyeong-ju and 2017 Po-hang. Among the non-structural elements, the ceiling system with steel panel used in Po-hang station showed failure examples of non-seismic design ceiling. In this study, the seismic performance of suspended ceiling with steel-panel, such as those used in Po-hang Station, was evaluated by shaking table tests. The shaking table tests were performed in accordance with the ICC-ES AC156 standard with floor acceleration being applied horizontally in one direction using a $3.3{\times}3.3m^2$ frame. The ceiling system consists of steel-panels, carrying channels, main and cross T-bars, and anti-falling clips. The anti-falling clip prevents the steel panel falling completely. The shaking table test confirmed that the damage at the previous stage had a direct impact on the damage state at the next stage. Through the shaking table test, the damage state of the T-bar type steel-panel suspended ceiling system was defined.
Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the gas-liquid system. While the non-absorbable gas does not participate directly In the absorption process. its pretence does affect the overall heat and mass transfer. An experimental study was performed to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of LiBr-H$_2$O solution flow ing over 6-row horizontal tubes with the water vapor absorption in the pretence of non-absorbable gases. The volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas, air, was varied from 0.17 to 10.0%. The combined effects of the solution flow rate and its concentration on the heat and mass transfer coefficients were also examined. The presence of 2% volumetric concentration of air resulted in a 25% reduction in the Nusselt number and 41% reduction in the Sherwood number Optimum film Reynolds number was found to exist at which the heat and mass transfer reach their maximum value independent of air contents. Reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. defined as the ratio of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at given non-absorbable gas content to that with pure water vapor, were correlated to account for the reduction in the heat and mass transfer due to non-absorbable gases in a falling film absorption process.
It is generally said that falling intonation is used at the end of a declarative sentence. However, this is not the case with all stretches of spontaneous speech which are marked in transcription as sentences. The present paper examines intonation patterns appearing at the end of declarative sentences in oral presentations, and discusses instances where falling intonation does not appear. The texts used for analysis are eight oral presentations collected at international conferences in the field of physics. Quantitative and qualitative analyses are carried out. Three major factors related to discourse structure have been found for non-occurrence of falling intonation at sentence boundaries.
In this paper, we investigate so-called the falling cat problem. It is well known that a cat, when released from an upside down configuration starting from rest, is able to land on her feet without violating angular momentum conservation. This has being an interesting problem for engineers for a long time. We consider a model of a falling cat as connected two rigid columns, which is a nonholonomic system. We design the controller for it, using time- state control form of the model and exact linearization technique. Finally, we test the controller thorough simulation on the model of a falling cat.

Many structural evaluation procedures of road and airfield pavements use the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) as a critical element of non-destructive deflection testing. FWD is a trailer mounted device that provides accurate data on pavement response to dynamic wheel loads. A dynamic load is generated by dropping a mass from a variable height onto a loading plate. The magnitude of the load and the pavement deflection are measured by a load celt and geophones. And database concerning pavement damage should be enhanced to analyze loss of thickness asphalt layer caused from the plastic deformation of pavement structure, such as cracking or rutting. The prototype FWD is developed, which consists of chassis system, hydraulic loading system, data acquisition and analysis system. This system subsequently merged to from automation management system and is then validated and updated to produce a working FWD which can actually be used in the field.
Purpose: To assess the environmental hazards of falling accident in the homes of the elderly. Method: 222 homes of the elderly were assessed by the home environmental Checklist from May to July in 2003. Results: The mean score of home environmental hazards for fall were 13.19 with the highest score being 49, ranging from 4 to 24. The bathroom was the most hazardous place in the home, porch came next bedroom, kitchen, living room and stair followed them. The floor surface such as finishes and non-skid mats was the most hazardous interior factor in the home, using bathroom came next furniture and illumination followed them. The floor surface such as finishes and non-skid mats in the bathroom, kitchen, living room and porch, illumination of bedroom and stair were the most prevalent hazards in the home of interior. Of the 49 potential hazards, bathroom grab bar was the most prevalent one with 89.9%, and non-skid rugs in the porch, bathroom and kitchen, safety of dinner table, the threshold and furniture of porch, and illumination of bedroom were prevalent more than half of the home under assessing. Men, living in the separate house or villa with stairs were in more hazardous environments. Conclusion: To reduce the potential hazards of fall accident in the home, improving hazards relating to floor surface such as slip resistance surface and mats is important specially those of the separate house or villa with stairs.
