  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) beam-column joints and to examine the structural performance of the proposed joints, which simplify the construction procedure of steel fabrication, welding works, concrete casting and joint strengthening. In the proposed beam-column joints, the steel element of columns forms continuously built-in crossing of H-sections (${\Box}$), with adjacent flanges of column being connected by horizontal stiffeners in a joint at the level of the beam flanges. In addition, simplified lateral reinforcement (${\Box}$) is adopted in a joint to confine the longitudinal reinforcing bars in columns. Experimental and analytical studies have been carried out to estimate the structural performance of the proposed joints. Twelve cruciform specimens and seven SRC beam-column subassemblage specimens were prepared and tested. The following can be concluded from this study: (1) SRC subassemblages with the proposed beam-column joints show adequate seismic performances which are superior to the demand of the current code; (2) The yield and ultimate strength capacities of the beam-to-column connections can be estimated by analysis based on the yield line theory; (3) The skeleton curves and the ultimate shear capacities of the beam-column joint panel are predicted with a fair degree of accuracy by considering a simple stress transfer mechanism.

  • Recently the laser welding technology has been applied increasingly for the automotive bodies. But the lap joint laser welding for 3 dimensional automotive body is new while the butt joint laser welding is well known as the tailored blank technology. In this study, the process window was found for the full penetration welding of the lap joint of the 1mm-thick high strength steel sheets. The limit curves and characteristic curves were suggested to define the boundaries and the contour lines in a space of the welding speed and the gap size. The characteristics of the weld sectional geometry were used to determine the limit curves. They are bead width, penetration depth and sectional area. After the observed data was analysed carefully, it was noticed that there was a transition point at which the sectional shape was changed and the bead area jumped as the welding speed was increased. Also a new concept of 'input energy Per volume' was suggested to distinguish the difference at the transition Point. The difference of sectional areas at the transition point can be related to the dynamic keyhole phenomena.

  • Recently, a new issue in designing spot welded structures such as automobile and train car bodies is to predict an economical fatigue design criterion. One of the most typical and traditional methods is to use a ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve. However, since the fatigue data on the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve vary according to the welding conditions, materials, geometry of joint and fatigue loading conditions, it is necessary to perform the additional fatigue tests for determining a new fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint having specific dimension and geometry. In this study, the stress distributions around spot welds of various spot welded lap joints such as in-plane bending type (IB type), tension shea. type (TS type) and cross tension type (CT type) were numerically analyzed. Using these results, the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curves Previously obtained from the fatigue tests for each type were rearranged into the Δ$\sigma$-N$\sub$f/ relations with the maximum stresses at the nugget edge of the spot weld.

  • When an adhesive joint is exposed to high environmental temperature, the tensile load capability of the adhesive joint decreases because the elastic modulus and failure strength of structural adhesive decrease. The thermo-mechanical properties of structural adhesive can be improved by addition of fillers to the adhesive. In this paper, the elastic modulus and failure strength of adhesives as well as the tensile load capability of tubular single lap adhesive joints were experimentally and theoretically investigated with respect to the volume fraction of filler (alumina) and the environmental temperature. Also the tensile modulus of the fille containing epoxy adhesive was predicted using a new equation which considers filler shape, filler content and environmental temperature. The tensile load capability of the adhesive joint was predicted by using the effective strain obtained from the finite element analysis and a new failure model, from which the relation between the bonding length and the crack length was developed with respect to the volume fraction of filler.

  • This study is toidentify what makes people uncomfortable when people wear new shoes and to gain fundamental data for establishing shoe sizes. Data materal from the 16 measurement investigation conducted on 796 college girl students shows the following. 1) More than 96% of the subjects have experienced footache when they wore new shoes. It is significant that 45.76% of the subjects answered shoe width, especially pump-lining part cause them to feel more pain in their feet than any other measurement elements. 2) According to multiple correlation analysis to know which parts of feet determine shoe size, both multiple correlation coefficient of feet length to other parts of foot and joint girth to other parts of foot show the highest of R=0.93. 3) According to the ANOVA-tested result of estimated function when both foot-length-joint girth and foot length-joint girth-foot width are independent variables in each case, the level of α〈0.001 is very significant. 4) The comparision between KS G3116 adult women's shoe size establishment table and my table in this study reveals that the cases of more increased joint girth measurements than standard joint girth measurements in KS G 3116 table are easy to find.

  • A new knee-ankle-foot-orthosis(KAFO) which uses an automatically-controlled electromechanical wrap spring clutch for the knee joint was developed in the present study. It was found that the output voltage from the foot switches of the developed KAFO was proportionally increased with respect to the applied load. The output voltage from the infrared sensor also decreased as the knee flexion angle increased. The knee joint system for the new KAFO weighs only 780g lighter than any other commercially available developed system. In addition, the solenoid reduces the reaction time for the automatic control of the knee joint. The static torque of the clutch was measured for three persons, and it satisfied the normal knee extension moment during the pre-swing. Three-dimensional gait analyses for three different gait patterns (normal gait, locked-knee gait, controlled-knee gait) from five normal subjects were conducted. Controlled-knee gait showed the maximum knee flexion angle of 40.56$\pm9.55^{\circ}$ and the maximum knee flexion moment of 0.20$\pm$0.07Nm/kg at similar periods in the normal gait. Our KAFO system satisfies both stability during stance phase and free knee flexion during the swing phase at the proper period during the gait cycle. Therefore, our KAFO system would be very useful in various low extremity orthotic applications.

  • This study presents a new beam-column model comprising material nonlinearity and joint flexibility to predict the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. The nonlinear behavior of connections has an outstanding role on the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. In presented research, the joint flexibility is considered applying a rotational spring at each end of the member. To derive the moment-rotation behavior of beam-column connections, the relative rotations produced by the relative slip of flexural reinforcement in the joint and the flexural cracking of the beam end are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the considered spread plasticity model, unlike the previous models that have been developed based on the linear moment distribution subjected to lateral loads includes both lateral and gravity load effects, simultaneously. To confirm the accuracy of the proposed methodology, a simply-supported test beam and three reinforced concrete frames are considered. Pushover and nonlinear dynamic analysis of three numerical examples are performed. In these examples the nonlinear behavior of connections and the material nonlinearity using the proposed methodology and also linear flexibility model with different number of elements for each member and fiber based distributed plasticity model with different number of integration points are simulated. Comparing the results of the proposed methodology with those of the aforementioned models describes that suggested model that only uses one element for each member can appropriately estimate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Recently there are many attempts to introduce PC construction method in buildings. But the study on PC structural wall has been made progress so slowly because it is very difficult to develop new items. In this study, we have developed new vertical joint on PC wall in order to upgrade constructivity and structural performance of the existing connections, then we have evaluated the seismic resistance performance. As a result of the cyclic loading tests for two specimens, proposed vertical joint on PC wall has shown that it behave the excellent structural performance in comparison to PC wall having no joint. Therefore, we think that proposed vertical joint is the system to apply buliding structure.

  • An estimation technique of the joint diameter distribution using the least square method is suggested. When utilizing the technique by Song and Lee, the diameter distribution would be obtained only from the trace length distribution defined in an infinite window after the trace length distribution is estimated from the contained trace length distribution. With the new technique, however, the diameter distribution can be directly obtained from the sample histogram of the contained trace lengths. Compared with the previous technique, it shows a more accurate result for small sizes of joint samples and provides the joint geometry parameter of volumetric frequency. Verification of this new technique was completed by using Monte Carlo simulations.
