  • In this study, the AERMOD air diffusing model was used to estimate the range of influence of Hazardous chemicals (hydrogen fluoride) in case of small accidents in Jeju area. The impact scope were in the order of Seogwipo Fire Station, Dongbu Fire Station, Jeju Fire Station, and Seobu Fire Station. Seasonal orders were summer, spring, autumn and winter. The correlation between the meteorological factors shows a strong positive correlation with the wind speed of 0.998 and has a negative correlation with the temperature of -0.463. Through the linear regression analysis, we could estimate the equation of Impact scope = 13.922WS (Wind Speed) - 5.195 and the reliability ($R^2$) was as high as 0.995.

  • Recently, summer temperatures have frequently been abnormal in Korea owing to global warming. In summer, a decrease in feed intake rate and biological activity were observed in Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle), leading to lower production rates in the industry. However, the precise scale of damage was not reported as with other animals of economic value. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of birth season on birth weight in Hanwoo. Data were collected from 100 local breeding farms from 2016 to 2019. A total of 41,081 Hanwoo calves were classified and analyzed by sex, year, month, and season (March-May, spring; June-August, summer; September-November, fall; and December-February, winter) of birth. The birth weight of Hanwoo calves differed according to birth month. The average birth weight of male calves was 30.47 kg and that of female calves was 28.16 kg. Hanwoo birth weight was the highest in March-born calves and the lowest in July-born calves. The birth weights of calves born in February, March, April, November, and December were significantly larger than those of calves born in July. In addition, the birth weight of Hanwoo calves from the summer was significantly lower than that of calves born in other seasons. Furthermore, Hanwoo steer slaughter age showed a negative correlation, whereas carcass weight had a positive correlation with birth weight. In the beef cattle industry, birth weight is a very important economic characteristic that is related to growth rate. These data will contribute toward planning the reproduction of Hanwoo and analysis of changes in characteristics of economic value owing to high temperatures.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the contribution of carcass traits (backfat thickness, eye muscle area, carcass weight and marbling score) and the season at slaughter to the price (auction and market) using squared semi-partial correlation. The season at slaughter (summer expressed as season_2, autumn as season_3, and winter as season_4) were added into the estimation as dummy variables, and spring was set as a default variable. In this study, the carcass grades of 22,298 Hanwoo steers slaughtered from 2012 to 2017 were used to performmultiple regression analysis. The rankings of the contribution of the carcass traits and the seasons at slaughter to the auction prices were in the order of marbling score (68.63%), season_4 (11.88%), backfat thickness (10.45%), eye muscle area (6.11%), season_3 (2.19%), season_2 (0.45%) and carcass weight (0.28%). (R-square of the regression = 0.4101). The rankings of the contribution to the total prices were in the order of carcass weight (51.74%), marbling score (32.12%), season_4 (6.04%), backfat thickness (5.54%), eye muscle area (3.22%), season_3 (1.14%), and season_2 (0.19%). (R-Square of the regression = 0.6486). As a result, season_3 and season_4 had a negative effect on the auction price and total price. Because of seasonal event such as Korean Thanksgiving Day and Korean New Year's Day on season_3 and season_4, much supply was needed to meet the high demand. Thus, the seasonal effect at slaughter could be another factor to be cosideredin when considering of slaughter or breeding.

  • Q fever is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii. Domestic ruminants are considered to be major source of human infection. The aim of this survey was to investigate seroprevalence of C. burnetii in ruminants in Gwangju area. A total of 1,000 samples (serum and lactoserum) were collected from 987 Korean native cattle, 5 Korean native goats, 2 beef cattle, 6 bulk-tank milk from each dairy farm in Gwangju area from January to October 2020 and analyzed by ELISA. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in bulk-tank milk from each dairy farms was 50.0%. Korean black goat and beef cattle had negative antibody test results for C. burnetii. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in Korean native cattle in Gwangju area was 7.1% and was higher in female (7.8%) than in male (3.4%) (P=0.024). The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in Korean native cattle appeared to increase with age (3.8% in 1 year-old, 7.1% in 3 year-old, and 10.7% in more than 5 year-old) (P<0.001). The seroprevalence of C. burnetii of Korean native cattle increased in spring and May was the highest in particular (P<0.001). As the distribution and density of tick-habitat are expected to increase due to climate crisis, this survey highlights the need for monitoring C. burnetii in domestic ruminants, including surveillance of C. burnetii infection in people working for livestock industry.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the monthly runoff concentration on non rainfall days in order to prepare basic data to compare the runoff concentration on rainfall days in 7 forest watersheds in the Republic of Korea. Forest stream water has been collected through 15 times of sampling in each watershed and analyzed based on the changes in concentration of Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Total Organic Carbon(TOC), Total Nitrogen(TN), and Total Phosphorus(TP). The average concentration was 0.8 mg/L for BOD, 1.4 mg/L for COD, 0.8 mg/L for TOC, 1.85 mg/L for TN and 0.002 mg/L for TP during non rainfall days. Coniferous forested watersheds showed higher value of TN and TP concentration. Concentrations of BOD and TP in early March (p<0.01) were affected by melt water flow input in spring season. Significant differences (p<0.01) in concentrations were observed in BOD and TOC, indicating seasonal rainfall and vegetation growth impacts on forest stream quality. Concentration of TN and TP showed significant positive correlation, and weak negative correlation was found in the concentration of BOD and TOC. It is expected that result of forest stream water on non rainfall days could be basic information in managing non-point source from forest watersheds.

  • This study aimed to understand and analyze the instructors' class satisfaction and the effectiveness of online general education classes perceived by instructors after inevitable COVID-19. A total of 54 instructors participated in the survey conducted at the end of the spring semester 2021 at C University located Gyeongsangnam-do. Findings revealed that instructors' satisfaction with their online classes was relatively low(2.80), and they negatively perceived their online classes. Also they show negative perception of the variable, interaction with learners(2.87). However, they show higher satisfaction with the next variables than the overall satisfaction; class management, online learning platform, and asynchronous online learning. Plus, a statistically significant result is that online learning platform have the biggest effect on the instructors' class satisfaction. Therefore, we need to know that instructors have to get familiar with the online learning platform and universities help them provide a variety of training sessions regarding online learning platforms. This study has limitations in that it was conducted only at one college and the limited number of variables was measured.

  • Water temperature affects plankton survival and growth. The dinoflagellate Shimiella gracilenta survives using the plastids of ingested prey, indicating kleptoplastidy. However, studies on the effects of water temperature on kleptoplastidic dinoflagellates are lacking. We explored the growth and ingestion rates of S. gracilenta as a function of water temperature. Furthermore, using data on its spatiotemporal distribution in Korean coastal waters during 2015-2018, we predicted its distribution under elevated temperature conditions of +2, +4, and +6℃. Growth rates of S. gracilenta with and without Teleaulax amphioxeia prey as well as ingestion rates were significantly affected by water temperature. Growth rates of S. gracilenta with and without prey were positive or zero at 5-25℃ but were negative at ≥30℃. The maximum growth rate of S. gracilenta with T. amphioxeia was 0.85 d-1, achieved at 25℃, and 0.21 d-1 at 20℃ without prey. The ingestion rate of S. gracilenta on T. amphioxeia at 25℃ (0.05 ng C predator-1 d-1) was greater than that at 20℃ (0.04 ng C predator-1 d-1). Thus, feeding may shift the optimal temperature for the maximum growth rate of S. gracilenta from 20 to 25℃. In spring and winter, the distributions of S. gracilenta under elevated temperature conditions were predicted not to differ from those during 2015-2018. However, S. gracilenta was predicted not to survive at some additional stations under elevated temperature conditions of +2, +4, and +6℃ in summer or under elevated temperature conditions of +6℃ in autumn. Therefore, global warming may affect the distribution of S. gracilenta.

  • The germination rate of radishes grown with the far infrared irradiated water and drinking water was 100% and 78% respectively. The far infrared irradiated water stimulated the cell division of the cotyledons and enlarged the cell sizes both in the dark and in the light. In the dark and light conditions, the size of the cotyledons of transversal axis and longitudinal axis grown with the far infrared irradiated water was bigger than that grown with the drinking water. The content of chlorophyll and the consumption of $CO_2$ of the cotyledons grown with the far infrared irradiated water were higher, respectively. Osmotic pressure of the cotyledons grown with the far infrared irradiated water was 1.25 factors higher than that grown with the drinking water. The water potential of the cotyledons grown with the far infrared irradiated water was more negative value. The length of hypocotyls grown with the far infrared irradiated water was 2.18 factors longer in the dark, 1.99 factors longer in the light than that grown with the drinking water and the radish roots grown with the far infrared irradiated water were larger, respectively.

  • Tooth movement, the phenomena and mechanisms of which are still controversial, can be considered as part of the result of the inflammatory processes. The purpose of this study was to examine the activity of macrophage and T-cell, playing important roles in the immune reaction, in the periodontal ligament of dog, in which experimental tooth movement was performed. Six one and half year-old dogs, a control and 5 experimentals, were studied. Light force (50-75g) was applied by placing open-coil spring between left mandibular premolars ; heavy force (250-300g), between right mandibular premolars. Experimental dogs were sacrificed at 12 hours, 1, 3, 7 and 14 days since force application, respectively. And the histologic and the immunohistochemical evaluation on the obtained tissue were performed, using $\alpha$-1-antichymotrypsin and CD3 antibodies. The results were as follows : 1. There were more inflammatory cell infiltrations in heavy force group than in light force group until 3 days. But from 7 dsays on, no difference was not observed between groups ; Such an infiltration was more evident at pressure side than at tension side. 2. Osteoclastic activity at pressure side began to be seen in 12 hours, increasing until 7 days. After then it decreased ; Such an activity was more evident in heavy force group than in light force group. 3. Tearing of periodontal ligament and vascular dilatation at tension side began to be seen in 12 hours, increasing until 3 days. After then it decreased ; Such an observation was more evident in heavy force group than in light force group, but there was no difference between groups in 14 days. 4. $\alpha$-1-antichymotrypsin expression in control group was positive, mainly in sulcular epithelium, but negative in periodontal membrane, pulp, bone cells. 5. $\alpha$-1-antichymotrypsin expression in experimental group was more positive in pressure side than in tension side ; The expression was a little more positive in cervical area of tooth until 3 days, but after 7days, it was more positive in apical area. 6. $\alpha$-1-antichymotrypsin expression in light force group began to be observed in 12 hours and reached to the greatest level in 7 days, after which it decreased ; In heavy force group, it was the greatest in 3 days, after which it decreased. 3 Expression in the periodontium was almost negative.

  • We investigated the hydrochemical properties of ChusanYongchulso Spring located in Buk-myeon, Ulleung Island, focusing on the formation and characteristics of aquifers in and around the Nari caldera. Abundant pumice with high permeability and numerous fractures (including faults and joints) that formed as a result of caldera subsidence are widely distributed in the subsurface, favoring the formation of aquifers. Because of the presence of porous pyroclastic rocks with a high internal surface area, the water type of the springs is characterized by $NaHCO_3$, with upper stream waters and the upper spring being characterized by $NaHCO_3$ and NaCl, respectively. Components with a high coefficient of determination with EC are $HCO_3$, Na, F, Ca, Mg, Cl, $SiO_2$, and $SO_4$. The high concentrations of Na and Cl might be attributable to the main lithologies in the area, given that alkaline volcanic rocks are distributed extensively across Ulleung Island. Eh and pH, which are considered to be important indicators of water-rock interaction, are unrelated to most components. According to the results obtained from factor analysis, the variance explained by factor 1 is 54% and by factor 2 is 25.8%. Components with a high loading on factor 1 are F, Na, EC, Cl, $HCO_3$, $SO_4$, $SiO_2$, Ca, $NO_3$, and Mg, whereas components with a high loading on factor 2 are Mg and Ca, along with K, $NO_3$, and DO with negative loadings. It is suggested that the high concentrations of Na, Cl, F, and $SO_4$ are closely related to the presence of fine-grained alkaline pyroclastic rocks with high permeability and porosity, which favorintensewater-rock interaction. However, a wide-ranging investigation that encompasses methods such as geophysical prospecting and geochemical analysis (including isotope, trace-element, and tracer techniques) will be necessary to gain a better understanding of the groundwater chemistry, aquifer distribution, and water cycling of Ulleung Island.
