  • Objectives : Floating acupuncture (FA) is a kind of newly developed acupuncture technique that contains its own apparatus. The technique has unique points that the body of the acupuncture needle stays intradermal space and manipulation is performed by shaking the needle horizontally; after manipulation, part of the needle remained in the intradermal space for 2~3 days. FA is not a common acupuncture methodology while various clinical study claims its efficacy on musculoskeletal disorders. In this study, the authors aimed to enhance the use of FA by comparing related theories. Methods : The authors reviewed classics, books, and articles related to FA, Meridian Muscle (MM), Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS), and Wrist-Ankle Acupuncture (WAA), and compared its characteristics by related theory, related symptoms, apparatus, and performing procedures. Results : FA was related and had various common parts with MM, MPS, and WAA, however, there were unique parts in the manipulation, apparatus, and stimulation location. FA is based on MM and MPS which pointing 'ashi points' or 'trigger points' as a treating target while FA does not stimulate the points directly. FA also targets subcutaneous space by inserting the needle horizontally as WAA does, while FA remains the needle handle part in the subcutaneous area for 2~3 days for more stimulation. Conclusions : FA has a unique manipulation procedure and potential benefit for musculoskeletal disorders despite the crude theological base written by Fu himself. Thus, developing a new explanation and patient-friendly methodology/apparatus is required for further down-to-earth studies.

  • In this paper, characteristics of the DC flashover voltage in the horizontal air gap of sphere-sphere/needle-needle electrode system were investigated when the combustion flame of paraffin oil was present between the two electrodes. The reduction characteristic of DC flashover voltage was discussed with the thermal ionization process, the relative air density and the deflection phenomena in the shape of flames that caused by the corona wind and Coulomb's force. As the results of an experimental investigation, It was found that the reduction characteristics of DC flashover voltages with flames were affected strongly by the flame deflection and the change of relative air density. It was also found that the thermal ionization phenomena were not important in the range of combustion flame temperature.

  • This study analyzed flame growth characteristics and carbonization patterns when floor materials were burned vertically using a needle flame produced for this study. It was found that PVC flooring was fire retardant and the area under direct flame contracted inward. Vertical combustion causes solidification in the form of a lump at the bottom and also generates soot in a pattern that progresses upwards. This study found that laminated flooring exhibited no fire retarding characteristics and that the laminated layer of its upper surface was destroyed by fire, causing irregular delamination. The carbonization ranges at the left and right sides were determined to be symmetrical. A vertical combustion test of a sample carpet showed that it exhibited no fire-retarding characteristics. It was observed that if heat accumulated in the carpet, the flame formed an ascending air current, and that when flammable materials were present around the flame, they further accelerated the diffusion of the flame. The carbonization pattern at the carpet surface exposed to direct flame revealed that the carpet surface had melted and had flown downwards and that many tiny holes formed on it.

  • Steam cakes were prepared with the addition of pine needle powder(Pinus densiflora Seib. et Zucc) at 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and their sensory quality and mechanical characteristics were compared. Sensory evaluation was performed and compared between the subjects in twenties and forties of age. As a result of the sensory evaluation in forties, steam cake with 3% pine needle powder showed the highest score in overall acceptability; however, in the group of twenties, control cake with no pine needle powder showed the highest score. In the measurement of color changes, L value(lightness) was decreased, but a value(redness) and b value(yellowness) were increased as the addition of pine needle powder increased. In textural characteristics, the hardness, springiness, gumminess and brittleness of steam cake were decreased by the increase of pine needle powder. The hardness and brittleness were increased as the storage time increased.

  • This study was carried out to investigate geographic variation in needle characteristics of Pinus densiflora, one of the most economically important tree species in Korea. Needles were collected from 35 natural populations and their morphological and anatomical characteristics were studied. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations in needle length, needle width, number of stomata row, density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$, number of serrations in 0.5mm, and number of resin ducts. In all these traits, variance components among individuals within populations were larger than those among populations. The density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ increased as the latitudes and elevations of the populations increased, while the number of serrations in 0.5mm decreased as the decrease of latitudes and elevations. The number of resin ducts was higher in inland populations than in coastal populations. The resin duct index appeared to be higher in western populations than in eastern populations. Cluster analysis based on morphological characteristics divided populations into three groups. The third group was composed of populations selected from the Taebaek mountains. The number of serrations in 0.5mm of this group was lower than that of other two groups, while the density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ was higher.

  • Percutaneous needle biopsy of pulmonary lesion with use of fluoroscopic guidance is well established as a diagnostic tool but limited by the small size and inaccessibility of certain lesions. However, percutaneous needle biopsy has been used increasingly in relation to advance and the safty of smaller biopsy needle and new imaging modalities such as ultrasound and CT. CT, because of its characteristics of high resolution, allows tissue sampling with considerable safety from area that heretofore could not be visualized under fluoroscopy. The authors summarized 44 pulmonary lesions that underwent CT-guided transthoracic biopsy with fine-needle over a 14 month period and analyzed the sensitivity of PTNB. CT-guided PTNB was done with 20 gauge or 22 gauge Westcott biopoy needle(Manan medical products, USA). A diagnosis was made in 27 of 44 cases(61%) including malignany in 19 of 24 cases and benignancy in 8 of 20 cases. The pulmonary mass lesions were located at the peripheral zone of the lung field in 33 cases and at the central zone in 11 cases. Complications were observed in 2 cases which were pneumothorax and hemoptysis each but specific therapy was not required. The sensitivity of PTNB by one session was 61%(27/44). The sensitivity of malignancy was 79%(19/24) and benignancy was 40%(8/20). These results suggest the usefulness of PTNB using fine needles be increased in earlier diagnosis and improved staging of pulmonary nodular lesions without significant complications.

  • With increasing interest in the effectiveness and safety of sunscreen worldwide, research on the development of new inorganic sunscreen is also gaining momentum. In the present study, non-nano sized needle type zinc oxide, which can meet the regulation of nano-material as a recent problem, has been synthesized and surface-modified with cetyl alcohol to obtain needle type zinc oxide powder. Here, we also investigated their physical properties and evaluated their potential application as sunscreens. As a result of the experiment, the sunscreen with needle type zinc oxide powder, which was non-nano, showed similar UV-protection properties and transparency compare to that of 40nm size zinc oxide. It was further confirmed that the UV blocking effect was significantly increased when the needle type zinc oxide dispersion was applied to the sunscreen. Therefore, although the needle type zinc oxide is non-nano (200 nm) material, it has the potential to be applied to the product as an excellent transparency (improvement of whiteness), UV protection efficacy and smooth texture.

  • This study was investigated the effects of dietary supplementation of Yacon by-products and pine needle powder on growth performance, carcass characteristics, pH, TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substance), WHC (water holding capacity), shear force, and meat color of chicken thigh meat. Broiler chicks were fed diets for five weeks containing 0% Yacon by-products and pine needle powder (Control), 0.5% Yacon by-products powder (T1), 1.0% Yacon by-products powder (T2), 0.5% pine needle powder (T3), and 1.0% pine needle powder (T4). There was no significant difference in growth performance among treatments, but mortality was decreased in diets by the supplementation of Yacon by-products and pine needle powder than that of control. The chicken fed control diet had higher cholesterol. LDL-cholesterol. triglyceride compared to those chicken fed Yacon by-products and pine needle powder regardless of concentrations, and HDL-cholesterol of control was lower than treatment. The pH and TBARS were significantly decreased by the supplementation of Yacon by-products and pine needle powder compared to the control (P<0.05), especially, pine needle powder group was significantly more effective in improving freshness compared to other test groups (P<0.05). The WHC and shear force were not significantly different. CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ value of test groups showed significantly higher value compare to the control, however, no difference in the CIE $b^*$ values was observed among test groups. In conclusion, a supplementation of Yacon by-products and pine needle powder were effective in decreasing pH, TBARS, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and increasing HDL-cholesterol concentration. Pine needle powder supplementation was most effective (T3 and T4).

  • This paper describes the discharge characteristics of liquid $SF_6$ (-41$[^{\circ}]$, 1.7[atm]) and $LN_2$ for plane to plane, needle to plane, plane to needle and sphere to plane electrode with gap variations from 1[mm] to 12[mm]. From this result, the breakdown voltage was increased with increasing gap length. Especially, the formation of bubbles by evaporation was observed in spite of non-applying voltage source. A corona is created of the applying voltage from the bubbles on the electrodes applied voltage. We consider it equal mechanism of corona as void exists in solid insulator. The results of liquid $SF_6$ and $LN_2$ discharge characteristics were caused by bubble formed evaporation and applied electric field voltage. Corona was happened to weak bubble and was proceed to new bubble breakdown.

  • It has been a principle research topic on the diesel engine development to increase the efficiency and the performance of engine to satisfy the user's needs for high reliability and durability. However, recently with the worldwide concerns at the global climate change and environmental protection, the main target in the diesel engine research has been changed to solve the exhaust emission problem in order to satisfy the strict emission regulations. To reduce the pollutant for the diesel engine, the researchs on the combustion chamber is the most important and has to be performed first of all. The diesel fuel injection system plays major role to air-fuel mixing process and influences engine output, themal efficiency, reliability, noise, and emissions. The experimental studies were conducted by varying the various parametric conditions and the results were campared with the computation and calculated results by using the fuel injection simulation program developed during previous research. From the experiments, the matching technique of a fuel injection pump and nozzle was conducted to understand under the various parametric conditions. Also, the relations between needle lift and wave propagation characteristics in high pressure pipe were examined. The basic design data from the experimentations and computation works would be applied to actual design works of diesel fuel injection system.
