  • New strengthening method based on Near Surface Mounted technique (NSM) is suggested, which can overcome the brittle nature of failure inherent to those reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP composite materials. The suggested technique secures ductile failure of reinforced concrete beams by having the strengthening Hybrid FRP rebars unbonded in parts. Experiments were performed in order to compare structural behaviors of strengthened beams with and without unbending along the Hybrid FRP rebars. Test results showed that only those beams strengthened by partially unbonded NSM failed in ductile manner. Theoretical expressions were derived for the minimum unbonded length of Hybrid FRP rebars with which ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete beam with partially unbonded NSM could be reached. The suggested partially unbonded NSM technique is expected to significantly improve the structural behavior of the strengthened beam with FRP composite materials.

  • In this paper, a stress transfer mechanism between near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plate and concrete was investigated and a reliable analytical procedure for it was presented by using bilinear bond-slip model simulating the bond behavior of NSM FRP plate. As a result, critical values in the bi-linear model such as maximum shear strength, slip at that time and failure slip at the initiation of softening de-bonding were suggested for being used in the differential equation considering he interfacial characteristic between NSM FRP and concrete. Also, it was found that the bond-slip behavior could be suitably redicted by using the proposed procedure even in the case of various bond lengths from the comparison with bond test result.

  • This paper presents an experimental work to study the flexural strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by partially de-bonded near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strip with various de-bonded length. Especially, considering high anchorage capacity at end of a FRP strip, the effect of de-bonded region at a central part was investigated. In order to check the improvement of strength or deformation capacity when the bonded surface area only increased without changing the FRP area, single and triple lines of FRP were planned. In addition, the flexural strength of the RC member strengthened by a partially de-bonded NSM FRP strip was evaluated by using the existing researchers' strength equation to predict the flexural strength after retrofit. From the study, it was found that where de-bonded region exists in the central part of a flexural member, the deformation capacity of the member is expected to be improved, because FRP strain is not to be concentrated on the center but to be extended uniformly in the de-bonded region. Where NSM FRP strips are distributed in triple lines, a relatively high strength can be exerted due to the increase of bond strength in the anchorage.

  • The purpose of this study is to define the shear reinforcing effect of Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) FRP strips in reinforced concrete (RC) member through a test. Three T shaped RC beams were made and two of them were strengthened with NSM FRP strips for increase shear strength. And those were tested to find the shear strengthening effect. In the test, two case of shear strengthening methods were considered such as 1) with NSM FRP strips having full embedded length and 2) with NSM FRP strips having some what short embedded length and additional externally bonded FRP sheet. As a result, the shear strengthening effect could be obtained when the NSM FRP strips are embedded to have full length up to the bottom of slab. However the shear strength was not increased in the case of having somewhat short embedded length of NSM FRP strips even additional EB sheet was enhanced.

  • Concrete structures may become vulnerable during their lifetime due to several reasons such as degradation of their material properties; design or construction errors; and environmental damage due to earthquake. These structures should be repaired or strengthened to ensure proper performance for the current service load demands. Several methods have been investigated and applied for the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using various materials. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement is one of the most recent type of material for the strengthening purpose of RC structures. The main objective of the present research is to identify the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with FRP bars by using near surface mounted (NSM) technique. Validation study is conducted based on the experimental test available in the literature to investigate the accuracy of finite element models using LS-DYNA to present the behavior of the models. A parametric analysis is conducted on the effect of FRP bar diameters, number of grooves, groove intervals as well as width and height of the grooves on the flexural behavior of strengthened reinforced slabs. Performance of strengthening RC slabs with NSM FRP bars was confirmed by comparing the results of strengthening reinforced slabs with control slab. The numerical results of mid-span deflection and stress time histories were reported. According to the numerical analysis results, the model with three grooves, FRP bar diameter of 10 mm and grooves distances of 100 mm is the most ideal and desirable model in this research. The results demonstrated that strengthening of reinforced concrete slabs using FRP by NSM method will have a significant effect on the performance of the slabs.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the flexural strengthening method of the concrete members. To accomplish this objective, a total of seven concrete beams were tested. From this study, it is found that the initial flexural stiffness and strength of the beams reinforced with NSM CFRP strips were significantly improved compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Failure of the beam reinforced with NSM strips is initiated by failure of NSM strips, eventually sudden explosive compressive failure in the loaded region. This strengthening method combined with NSM CFRP strips and high performance mortar for concrete cover recovery is evaluated by a good strengthening method for the strength, durability and good appearance of concrete structures.

  • Tests and analyses were performed in this study to assess the shear strength of Reinforced Concrete(RC) members strengthened by the Near Surface Mounted(NSM) technique in shear, which is drawing attention as an alternative to the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) bonding strengthening technique. Four-point bending tests were performed on 7 RC specimens without any shear reinforcement. The test variables such as the inclination of CFRP strip (45 degrees and 90 degrees), and the spacing of CFRP strip (250mm, 200mm, 150mm, 100mm) were considered. Through the testing scenarios, the effect of each test variable on the failure mode and the shear strength of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear were assessed. The test results show that the specimens with CFRP strips at 45 degrees go to failure as a result of the strip fracture, but the specimens with CFRP strips at 90 degrees go to failure as a result of the slip of strips. Strips at 45 degrees was the more effective than strips at 90 degrees, not only in terms of increasing beam shear resistance but also in assuring larger deformation capacity at beam failure. In addition, the RBSN analysis appropriately predicted the crack formation and the load-displacement response of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear.

  • This paper presents a series of test result in order to study fire resistance capacity of the Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plate, which are tensile test of CFRP under various temperature loading, temperature loading test of epoxy and bond test of NSM CFRP to concrete under various temperature loading. From the tests, it was found that NSM retrofit method had high efficiency in strengthening concrete under ordinary temperature. However, the strength of the system was able to be drastically decreased even a little increase of surrounding temperature. Especially, bond capacity begins to disappear when the surrounding temperature approaches the glass transition temperature of epoxy. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the fire resistance capacity of both fiber reinforced polymer reinforcement and epoxy for bonding in order to develop safe fire resistance design of structure.

  • This paper presents a fire exposure test result to evaluate fire resistance capacity of retrofit method using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) in reinforcement concrete structure. Especially, this paper focused on near-surface-mounted retrofit method; FRP is mounted into the groove after making a groove in concrete. In the test, main parameters are retrofit method and materials for fire proofing. Spray type of perlite and board type of calcium silicate were considered as external fire proof on surface while particle of calcium silicate and polymer mortar as internal one in groove. By increasing the temperature of inside heating furnace, the transfer of temperature from surface of fire proofing material to groove in specimen was measured. As a result, fire proofing using the board of calcium silicate was more effective to delay the heat transfer from outside than spraying with perlite. It was found that the fire proofing could resist outside temperature of $820^{\circ}C$ at maximum to keep the temperature of epoxy below glass transit temperature (GTT).

  • This paper presents test results on strengthening details of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with near-surface mounted(NSM) CFRP rod and strip. A total of 8 specimens have been tested. The specimens can be classified into the same strengthening area group and the different spacing group. For the same strengthening area group, experimental results revealed that specimens strengthened with NSM CFRP strips improved the flexural capacity of RC beams. For the different spacing group, the flexural capacity of RC beams was almost the same, but it was different in case of NSM CFRP rods.
