By using Frenet formulation and Timoshenko beam theory, the partial differential equations of motion are derived for a helical spring having a doubly symmetrical cross section subjected to the pre-load axially. These equations of motion are solved to give the dispersion relationship and dynamic stiffness matrix is assembled. Natural frequencies are obtained from the receptance of the system. The results of the dynamic stiffness method are compared with those of the transfer matrix method from published examples and finite element method.

The presence of a damage, such as a crack, in a structure increases the flexibility and damping in the structure. Most of methods to detect damage or damage location uses stiffness matrix of the structural system. The modification of stiffness matrix, however, has complicated procedures to identify structural. system in the basis of finite element model and has too many degree of freedom to calculate. Identification of changes of flexibility of structure can offer damage information immediately and simple procedure can employ real time continuous monitoring system. To identify changes of the flexibility, vibration mode shapes and natural frequencies are usually used. In this paper, a procedure for damage location in continuous girder bridges using vibration data is described. The effectiveness and sensitivity of the presented method to measurement errors in mode shapes and natural frequencies are investigated using analytical results from finite element models. It is shown that the errors in the first mode shape and first natural frequency demonstrate much larger influence than those in the higher mode shapes and modal frequencies.
An eigenvalue analysis of a tunable micro-mechanical actuator is presented. The actuator is modeled as a continuum structure. The eigenvalue modified by the tuning voltage is computed through the linearization of the relation between the electrostatic force and the displacement at the equilibrium. A staggered algorithm is employed to perform the coupled analysis of the electrostatic and elastic fields. The stiffness matrix of the actuator is modified at this equilibrium state. The displacement field is perturbed using an eigenmode profile of the actuator. The configuration change of the actuator due to perturbation modifies the electrostatic field and thus the electrostatic force. The equivalent stiffness matrix corresponding to the perturbation and the change in the electrostatic force is then added to stiffness matrix in order to explain natural frequency shifting. The numerical examples are presented and compared with the experiments in the literatures.
This paper presents the geometrical methodology to decouple the vibration modes of an elastically supported single rigid body in three-dimensional space. It is shown that the vibration modes can be decoupled by placing the center of elasticity at suitable locations and thereby yielding the plane(s) of symmetry for the given stiffness matrix. The developed methodology has been applied to the actuator supported by the 4-wire suspensions in optical discs, which has one plane of symmetry. For this numerical example, the axes of vibrations have been computed and illustrated with the natural frequencies. The forced response at the objective lens is represented and its geometrical interpretation has been explained as the mutual moment between the axis of vibration and the applied wrench times the line coordinates of the axis of vibration.
The dynamic characteristics of continuous steel-concrete composite beams considering the effect of interlayer slip were investigated based on Euler Bernoulli's beam theory. A simplified calculation model was presented, in which the Mode Stiffness Matrix (MSM) was developed. The natural frequencies and modes of partial-interaction composite continuous beams can be calculated accurately and easily by the use of MSM. Proceeding from the present method, the natural frequencies of two-span steel-concrete composite continuous beams with different span-ratios (0.53, 0.73, 0.85, 1) and different shear connection stiffnesses on the interface are calculated. The influence pattern of interfacial stiffness on bending vibration frequency was found. With the decrease of shear connection stiffness on the interface, the flexural vibration frequencies decrease obviously. And the influence on low order modes is more obvious while the reduction degree of high order is more sizeable. The real natural frequencies of partial-interaction continuous beams commonly used could have a 20% to 40% reduction compared with the fully-interaction ones. Furthermore, the reduction-ratios of natural frequencies for different span-ratios two-span composite beams with uniform shear connection stiffnesses are totally the same. The span-ratio mainly impacts on the mode shape. Four kinds of shear connection stiffnesses of steel-concrete composite continuous beams are calculated and compared with the experimental data and the FEM results. The calculated results using the proposed method agree well with the experimental and FEM ones on the low order modes which mainly determine the vibration properties.
An advanced model for the linear flutter analysis is introduced in this paper. Higher-order beam structural models are developed by using the Carrera Unified Formulation, which allows for the straightforward implementation of arbitrarily rich displacement fields without the need of a-priori kinematic assumptions. The strong form of the principle of virtual displacements is used to obtain the equations of motion and the natural boundary conditions for beams in free vibration. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is then developed by relating the amplitudes of harmonically varying loads to those of the responses. The resulting dynamic stiffness matrix is used with particular reference to the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to carry out free vibration analyses. According to the doublet lattice method, the natural mode shapes are subsequently used as generalized motions for the generation of the unsteady aerodynamic generalized forces. Finally, the g-method is used to conduct flutter analyses of both isotropic and laminated composite lifting surfaces. The obtained results perfectly match those from 1D and 2D finite elements and those from experimental analyses. It can be stated that refined beam models are compulsory to deal with the flutter analysis of wing models whereas classical and lower-order models (up to the second-order) are not able to detect those flutter conditions that are characterized by bending-torsion couplings.
In this article, free vibration behavior of electro-magneto-thermo sandwich Timoshenko beam made of porous core and Graphene Platelet Reinforced Composite (GPLRC) in a thermal environment is investigated. The governing equations of motion are derived by using the modified strain gradient theory for micro structures and Hamilton's principle. The magneto electro are under linear function along the thickness that contains magnetic and electric constant potentials and a cosine function. The effects of material length scale parameters, temperature change, various distributions of porous, different distributions of graphene platelets and thickness ratio on the natural frequency of Timoshenko beam are analyzed. The results show that an increase in aspect ratio, the temperature change, and the thickness of GPL leads to reduce the natural frequency; while vice versa for porous coefficient, volume fractions and length of GPL. Moreover, the effect of different size-dependent theories such as CT, MCST and MSGT on the natural frequency is investigated. It reveals that MSGT and CT have most and lowest values of natural frequency, respectively, because MSGT leads to increase the stiffness of micro Timoshenko sandwich beam by considering three material length scale parameters. It is seen that by increasing porosity coefficient, the natural frequency increases because both stiffness and mass matrices decreases, but the effect of reduction of mass matrix is more than stiffness matrix. Considering the piezo magneto-electric layers lead to enhance the stiffness of a micro beam, thus the natural frequency increases. It can be seen that with increasing of the value of WGPL, the stiffness of microbeam increases. As a result, the value of natural frequency enhances. It is shown that in hc/h = 0.7, the natural frequency for WGPL = 0.05 is 8% and 14% less than its for WGPL = 0.06 and WGPL = 0.07, respectively. The results show that with an increment in the length and width of GPLs, the natural frequency increases because the stiffness of micro structures enhances and vice versa for thickness of GPLs. It can be seen that the natural frequency for aGPL = 25 ㎛ and hc/h = 0.6 is 0.3% and 1% more than the one for aGPL = 5 ㎛ and aGPL = 1 ㎛, respectively.
Derivation procedures of exact dynamic stiffness matrices of thin-walled curved beams subjected to axial forces are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. Firstly this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, displacement functions of dispalcement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using clement force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies of the nonsymmetric thin-walled curved beam are evaluated and compared with analytical solutions or results by ABAQUS's shell elements in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

This paper describes the analysis of dynamic characteristics and prediction of the stiffness for the joint between structural members. In the process of deriving the governing equations, the stiffness values responsible for the moment and shear force were modelled by using linear and torsional springs in the middle of a clamped-clamped beam. The sensitivities of the natural frequency and modal assurance criterion were investigated as a function of the dimensionless linear and torsional spring stiffness. The reliability of the predictions for the linear and torsional stiffness values was verified by the inverse computations of the stiffness matrix. The predictive and exact theoretical stiffness values were compared for the stiffness element in the finite element formulation, and their results show an excellent correlation. It is strongly anticipated that although the proposed methodology is currently limited to the analytical utilization, it will provide a useful tool to estimate unknown joint stiffness values based on the experimental natural frequency and mode shape.

In general, we have used the finite element method(FEM) to find natural frequencies of plates. In this method, however, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for finding natural frequencies of plates correctly. Therefore it was very difficult to analyze the free vibration of plates correctly on personal computer. For overcoming this disadvantage of the FEM, the authors have developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method(FE-TSCM) which is based on the concept of modeling techniques in the FEM and the transfer of the stiffness coefficient in the transfer stiffness coefficient method. In this paper, we formulate free vibration analysis algorithm of rectangular plates using the FE-TSCM. Some numerical examples of rectangular plates are proposed, and their results and computation times obtained by the FE-TSCM are compared with those by the FEM and the finite element-transfer matrix method in order to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the FE-TSCM.
