Cleavage fracture behaviors were investigated in Ni-Mo-Cr steels with mixed microstructure of lower bainite and martensite. As the size of carbide decreased, the cleavage fracture strength increased, which was independent of the sizes of grain and packet. The measured cleavage fracture strengths were in good agreement with cleavage fracture strengths calculated by Petch model rather than by modified Griffith model in micro-structures with fine carbides, the size of which were small below a few hundred nanometer.
The effect of grain refinement of the strength and ductility of metallic materials is investigated. A model in which a single phase material is considered as an effectively two-phase one is discussed. A distinctive feature of the model is that grain boundaries are treated as a separate phase deforming by a diffusion mechanism. Deformation of the grain interior phase is assumed to be carried by two concurrent mechanism. Deformation of the grain interior phase is assumed to be carried by two concurrent mechanisms: dislocation glide and mass transfer by diffusion. The model was exemplified by simulating uniaxial tensile deformation of Cu down to the nanometer grain size. The results confirm the observed strain hardening behaviour and a trend for reduction of ductility with decreasing grain size at room temperature.
The development of functional foods started booming from several years ago in the world. The size of functional materials are in the range of micrometer level. This size can be much smaller into nanometer level to be more effective. We face some problems from the materials, such as flavor, taste, color, viscosity, etc. in functional materials. The problems can be solved by micro / nanoencapsulation technique. This paper showed some results of the research related on the technique for functional milks and dairy products. The nono / microcapsules are the form of liquid instead of solid. Coating materials used were fatty acid esters, and core materials were lactase, iron, ascorbic acid. isoflavone, and chitooligosaccharide. The ranges of capsules are from 100 nm to 200 ${\mu}$m. The sample milks added nano/microcapsules were homogeneous and prevented the defects of core materials. It was observed that nano / microcapsules in milk and dairy products were effective as functional material without defaults. It was indicated that targeted functional foods can be developed further in various foods by nanotechnology.

Uniform Ag nanoparticles (< 10 nm) were effectively prepared in 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine as a solvent with multiple functions including reduction and stabilization. An Ag-complex such as $Ag_2(ehac)_2(eha)_2$ (ehac = 2-ethylhexylammonium carbamate; eha = 2-ethylhexylamine) was used as an Ag-precursor, whereas the usage of a salt such as $AgNO_3$ showed the formation of Ag nanoparticles in larger and irregular size (30 - 500 nm). The Ag nanoparticles (< 10 nm) prepared by using the Ag-complex could also be effectively stabilized by 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine. Transmission electron micrographs confirmed that the Ag particles were spherical and in the nanometer size.

Nano-structured ceramics, which consist of structural elements with nanometer-size crystallites, are expected to show various unusual properties. We developed the novel nano-structured ceramics which consists of $Si_3N_4$ and TiN and a self-lubricant material. The ceramics was fabricated by powder metallurgy process using mechano-chemical grinding process and short-time sintering process. Each grain size of matrix and the self-lubricant particle was under about 50 nm and a few namometer. It showed high wear resistance and low friction coefficient by controlling of microstructure.
The development of reliable synthetic routes to polymer nanomaterials with well-defined size and morphology is a critical research topic in contemporary materials science. The ability to generate nanometer-sized polymer materials can offer unprecedented, interesting insights into the physical and chemical properties of the corresponding materials. In addition, control over shape and geometry of polymer nanoparticles affords versatile polymer nanostructures, encompassing nanospheres, core-shell nanoparticles, hollow nanoparticles, nanorods/fibers, nanotubes, and nanoporous materials. This review summarizes a diverse range of synthetic methods (broadly, hard template synthesis, soft template synthesis, and template-free synthesis) for fabricating polymer nanomaterials. The basic concepts and significant issues with respect to the synthetic strategies and tools are briefly introduced, and the examples of some of the outstanding research are highlighted. Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of research activities that concentrate on fabrication of various kinds of polymer nanoparticles.
Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is known to be one of the major harmful emissions produced by diesel engines. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than $I{\mu}\textrm{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Diesel particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health because they penetrate human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. The measurement of the number distribution of nanometer size particles (nanoparticles) in the diesel exhaust emission is important in order to evaluate their environmental and health impact, and to develop new types of diesel particulate filters. In this study, we directly sampled particulate matters emitted from a diesel truck mounted on the chassis dynamometer by a flow separator and dilution system, and measured the nanoparticles using two types of differential mobility analyzers combined with a Faraday cup electrometer (FCE) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The particle size distributions were analyzed by changing engine operation condition, i.e. ratio of engine loading. The total number concentration of particles were increased with the engine loading ratio and the nanoparticles (less than 50nm) were affected by hydrocarbon (HC) concentration in the diesel exhaust.
Nano-sized cobalt oxide powders were prepared by low pressure spray pyrolysis process. The precursor powders obtained by low pressure spray pyrolysis process from the spray solution with ethylene glycol had several microns size and hollow structure. The precursor powders obtained from the spray solution with optimum concentration of ethylene glycol formed the nano-sized cobalt oxide powders with regular morphology after post-treatment without milling process. On the other hand, the cobalt oxide powders obtained from the spray solution without ethylene glycol had submicron size and spherical shape before and after posttreatment. The mean size of the cobalt oxide powders formed from the spray solution with concentration of ethylene glycol of 0.7M was 180 nm after post-treatment at temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The mean size of the powders could be controlled from several tens nanometer to micron sizes by changing the post-treatment temperatures in the preparation of cobalt oxide powders by low pressure spray pyrolysis process.
In the synthesis of nanoparticles, much attention has been paid to regulating the particle size. There has been a possible evident that using the central cavity (core) of the protein ferritin has a greatly significant influence on it because the core can generate the nanometer-sized mineral particles of variable metal ions. In this report, recombinant human L-ferritins produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae were purified and their molecular properties were characterized. The cDNA for human ferritin L chain was also expressed in another host such as Escherichia coli, and the properties of recombinant L-ferritins were compared. From isoelectric focusing experiment, the L-ferritin from the recombinant yeast showed no indication of N-glycosylation. Some post-translational modifications other than N-glycosylation were speculated in the L-ferritins from yeast. A difference was made in the L-ferritins in their iron uptake rates and the initial rate of the L-ferritin from yeast was slightly increased. The reconstitution yield and size distribution of the core minerals were analyzed in the L-ferritins by transmission electron microscopy. The L-ferritin from yeast with higher reconstitution yield (54.5%) showed slightly larger sizes (mean 6.92 nm) with narrower size distribution than the L-ferritin from E. coli. It is, in conclusion, speculated that L-ferritin from yeast is relatively superior to the other, in view of the size of nanoparticle and its relative homogeneity.
To regulate the safety protocols in nuclear facilities, radioactive aerosols have been extensively researched to understand their health impacts. However, most measured particle-size distributions remain at low resolutions, with the particle sizes ranging from nanometer to micrometer. This study combines the high-resolution detection of 500 size classes, ranging from 6 nm to 10 ㎛, for aerodynamic diameter distributions, with a regional lung deposition calculation. We applied the new approach to characterize particle-size distributions of aerosols generated during the plasma arc cutting of simulated non-radioactive steel alloy wastes. The high-resolution measured data were used to calculate the deposition ratios of the aerosols in different lung regions. The deposition ratios in the alveolar sacs contained the dominant particle sizes ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 ㎛. We determined the distribution of various metals using different vapor pressures of the alloying components and analyzed the uncertainties of lung deposition calculations using the low-resolution aerodynamic diameter data simultaneously. In high-resolution data, the changes in aerosols that can penetrate the blood system were better captured, correcting their potential risks by a maximum of 42%. The combined calculations can aid the enhancement of high-resolution measuring equipment to effectively manage radiation safety in nuclear facilities.
