  • In this study, the effect of temperature effect of the rubber matrix filled with nano sized silica particles composites with silica volume fraction of 19-25% was investigated by the Charpy impact test. The Charpy impact test was conducted in the temperature range from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$. The critical energy release rate GIC of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles was considerably affected by temperature and it was shown that the maximum value was appeared at higher temperature between temperature tested and it was shown that the value of GIC increases as temperature tested increases. The major fracture mechanisms were matrix deformation, silica particle debonding and delamination, microcrack between particles and matrix, and/or pull out between particles and matrix which is ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact surfaces fracture.

  • Silica/SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) compounds are the primary constituents of tire treads. Furthermore, the excellent dynamic viscoelastic properties of silica lead to good fuel efficiencies. However, the silanol group on the surface of silica does not mix well with non-polar rubber because of its polarity. This incompatibility causes aggregation due to the occurrence of hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl groups, thereby reducing the dispersibility of silica. Recently, the wet master batch (WMB) process has been applied to overcome these disadvantages, and research on silica dispersants that can be used in the WMB process has been increasing. In this study, we prepared silica/SBR compounds by using three types of eco-friendly cellulose-based dispersants in the WMB process, namely: cellulose-, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and nanocellulose-based dispersants. Subsequently, we compared the vulcanization characteristics, viscoelastic properties, and mechanical properties of the compounds. The silica dispersibility in the rubber compounds was improved with the addition of the nano-cellulose dispersant, resulting in the enhancement of the workability, hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance of the SBR compound.

  • Recently, as carbon neutrality has been important factor in the construction industry, many studies have been conducted on the high-volume fly ash concrete. High volume fly ash concrete(HVFC) is usually made by replacing more than 50% of cement with fly ash. However, HVFC has a disadvantage of low compressive strength in early age. To overcome this shortcoming of HVFC, improve this, interest in techonolgy using nanomaterials is increasing. Nano silica is expected to improve the early age strength of HVFC as a pozzolanic material. This study investigated the effect of nano silica on the early hydration reaction and microstructure of HVFC. The early hydration reaction of HFVC was analyzed through setting time, isothermal calorimeter, compressive strength and thermal weight analysis. In addition, the microstructure of HVFC was measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. From the test results, it was confirmed that nano silica increased the early age strength and improve the microstructure of HVFC.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of tribochemical silica coating on the shear bond strength (SBS) of rebonded ceramic brackets using nano-filled flowable composite resin. Methods: A total of 60 premolars were prepared and divided into 4 equal groups as follows: Tribochemical silica coating (TC) + Transbond XT (XT), TC + Transbond supreme LV (LV), Sandblast treatment (SA) + XT, SA + LV. Treated ceramic brackets were rebonded on the premolars using each adhesive. All samples were tested in shear mode on a universal testing machine. Results: SBS of silica coated groups were high enough for clinical usage (TCLV: 10.82 $\pm$ 1.82 MPa, TCXT: 11.50 $\pm$ 1.72 MPa). But, SBS of the sandblast treated groups had significantly lower values than the tribochemical silica coated groups (SALV, 1.23 $\pm$ 1.16 MPa; SAXT, 1.76 $\pm$ 1.39 MPa; p < 0.05). There was no difference between the shear bond strength by type of adhesive. In the silica coated groups, 77% of the samples showed bonding failure in the adhesive. In the sandblast treated group, all bonding failures occurred at the bracket-adhesive interface. Conclusions: The result of this study suggest that newly introduced nano-filled flowable composite resin and tribochemical silica coating application on debonded ceramic bracket bases can produce appropriate bond strengths for orthodontic bonding.

  • Tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) and silica nanopowder were synthesized from the waste silicon sludge containing 15% weight of silicon powder. TMOS, a precursor of silica nanopowder, was firstly prepared from the waste silicon sludge by catalytic chemical reaction. The maximum recovery of the TMOS was 100% after 5 hrs regardless of reaction temperature above $130^{\circ}C$. But the initial reaction rate became faster while the reaction temperature was higher than $150^{\circ}C$. As the methanol feedrate Increased from 0.8 ml/min to 1.4 ml/min, the yield of reaction was not varied after 3 hrs. Then, silica nanopowder was synthesized from the synthesized TMOS by flame spray pyrolysis. The morphology of as-prepared silica nanopowder was spherical and non-aggregated. The average particle diameters ranged from 9 nm to 30 nm and were in proportional to the precursor feed rate, and precursor concentration.

  • Thermal insulation material was prepared by cross-linking chemical reaction of silica aerogel and epoxy resin, which has a high porous and vacant properties. The structural, mechanical, and thermal properties were analyzed in order to verify its application for industrial and electrical applications. The thermal conductivities were changed from 115 mW/mK to 75 mW/mK by reducing the contents of nano-porous silica areogel powders. The compressive loading is also decreased by increasing the contents of silica aerogels by 20 wt% in aerogel/epoxy composites. It is concluded that the formulated composite materials can be applied to building materials, electronics parts, and heavy industries.

  • The toner type paper-like display (PLD) has been developed with two polymer particles having opposite polarity which is composed of polymer, colorant and external additives (nano-sized silica). Nano-sized silica with triboelectric charge was used for the charge control agent (CCA) and influenced on the electrostatic properties of the silica-coated polymer particles. The PLD cell using silica-coated particles (200 seconds) had shown a good white appearance and low driving voltage. The result could be explained in terms of the surface morphology and the cohesiveness depending on the silica coating time.

  • The present study described an antimicrobial spray composition comprising nanosized silica-silver particles, in which nano-silver is bound to silica molecules and a water-soluble polymer, the nanosized silica-silver particles prepared by irradiating a solution comprising a silver salt, silicate and the water-soluble polymer with radiation rays. According to a surfactant addition, the compositions were not turbid and were colorless. Also samples (cotton fabrics and wallpaper) were treated with the compositions also did not cause any stains even after drying under sunshine and at $80^{\circ}C$. Our results suggested that the spray formulation product was of practical use to control indoor fungi.

  • Surface modification of tridimensional cubic mesoporous silica, SBA-16, was investigated with pendant arm functionalized cobalt diaminosarcophagine (diAMsar) cage complex which covalently grafted onto the silica surface through the silication with sylanol group. The spectroscopic results showed that the mesoporous structure was preserved under the $[Co(diAMsar)]^{3+}$ grafting reaction condition. Successful grafting prevented the cobalt diAMsar cage from leaching out from the SBA-16 support.
