Estimation of Seasonal Cointegration under Conditional Heteroskedasticity

  • We consider the estimation of seasonal cointegration in the presence of conditional heteroskedasticity (CH) using a feasible generalized least squares method. We capture cointegrating relationships and time-varying volatility for long-run and short-run dynamics in the same model. This procedure can be easily implemented using common methods such as ordinary least squares and generalized least squares. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimation method is computationally difficult and may not be feasible for larger models. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method is superior to the ML method when CH exists. In order to illustrate the proposed method, an empirical example is presented to model a seasonally cointegrated times series under CH.

Multivariate Control Charts for Autocorrelated Process

  • In this paper, we propose Shewhart control chart and EWMA control chart using the autocorrelated data which are common in chemical and process industries and lead to increase the number of false alarms when conventional control charts are applied. The effect of autocorrelated data is modeled as a autoregressive process, and canonical analysis is used to reduce the dimensionality of the data set and find the canonical variables that explain as much of the data variation as possible. Charting statistics are constructed based on the residual vectors from the canonical variables which are uncorrelated over time, and the control charts for these statistics can attenuate the autocorrelation in the process data. The charting procedures are illustrated with a numerical example and simulation is conducted to investigate the performances of the proposed control charts.

  • There have been two streams of the studies on development structure : conceptual model approach and statistical analysis approach. But In these days, the latter has been becoming the main approach owing to the development of multivariate statistical methods and statistical packages. In this study, we examine methodologies and results of the leading researches related to development structure based on statistical analysis and propose the future research directions. This analysis would be expected to contribute toward the construction of long-range development policies on each country.

Common Feature Analysis of Economic Time Series: An Overview and Recent Developments

  • In this paper we overview the literature on common features analysis of economic time series. Starting from the seminal contributions by Engle and Kozicki (1993) and Vahid and Engle (1993), we present and discuss the various notions that have been proposed to detect and model common cyclical features in macroeconometrics. In particular, we analyze in details the link between common cyclical features and the reduced-rank regression model. We also illustrate similarities and differences between the common features methodology and other popular types of multivariate time series modelling. Finally, we discuss some recent developments in this area, such as the implications of common features for univariate time series models and the analysis of common autocorrelation in medium-large dimensional systems.

A Kullback-Leibler divergence based comparison of approximate Bayesian estimations of ARMA models

  • Autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models involve nonlinearity in the model coefficients because of unobserved lagged errors, which complicates the likelihood function and makes the posterior density analytically intractable. In order to overcome this problem of posterior analysis, some approximation methods have been proposed in literature. In this paper we first review the main analytic approximations proposed to approximate the posterior density of ARMA models to be analytically tractable, which include Newbold, Zellner-Reynolds, and Broemeling-Shaarawy approximations. We then use the Kullback-Leibler divergence to study the relation between these three analytic approximations and to measure the distance between their derived approximate posteriors for ARMA models. In addition, we evaluate the impact of the approximate posteriors distance in Bayesian estimates of mean and precision of the model coefficients by generating a large number of Monte Carlo simulations from the approximate posteriors. Simulation study results show that the approximate posteriors of Newbold and Zellner-Reynolds are very close to each other, and their estimates have higher precision compared to those of Broemeling-Shaarawy approximation. Same results are obtained from the application to real-world time series datasets.

Stochastic Generation Model Development for Optimum Reservoir Operation of Water Distribution System (저수지 최적운영모형을 위한 추계학적 모의 발생 모형의 유도)

  • It is common practice in the case of optimum reservoir operation model that the reservoir inflow series are generated by stochastic model with keeping other variable such as water demands from the reservoir constant. However, when the input and output of the water distribution system have close relationship the output variables can be stochastically generated in relation with the input variables. In the present study the reservoir inflow series, the input of the system, is generated by periodic autoregressive model with constant parameter, and the agricultural water demand series, the output, is generated using periodic multivariate autoregressive model with constant parameter. The time period of the data series generated is taken as 10-day which is the common period used for agricultural water uses. The results of data generation by two different models showed that the periodic stochastic models well represent the characteristics of the historical time series, and that in the case of generating model for agricultural demand series it has closer relation with reservoir inflow than with the series itself.

  • When a financial time series consists of daily (closing) returns, traditional volatility models such as autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) and generalized ARCH (GARCH) are useful to figure out daily volatilities. With high frequency returns in a day, one may adopt various multivariate GARCH techniques (MGARCH) (Tsay, Multivariate Time Series Analysis With R and Financial Application, John Wiley, 2014) to obtain intraday volatilities as long as the high frequency is moderate. When it comes to the ultra high frequency (UHF) case (e.g., one minute prices are available everyday), a new model needs to be developed to suit UHF time series in order to figure out continuous time intraday-volatilities. Aue et al. (Journal of Time Series Analysis, 38, 3-21; 2017) proposed functional GARCH (fGARCH) to analyze functional volatilities based on UHF data. This article introduces fGARCH to the readers and illustrates how to estimate fGARCH equations using UHF data of KOSPI and Hyundai motor company.

An Analysis on Mutual Shock Spillover Effects among Interest Rates, Foreign Exchange Rates, and Stock Market Returns in Korea (한국에서의 금리, 환율, 주가의 상호 충격전이 효과 분석)

  • In this study, I examine mutual shock spillover effects among interest rate differences, won-dollar foreign exchange change rates, and stock market returns in Korea during the daily sample period from the beginning of 1995 to the October 16, 2015, using the multivariate GARCH (generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity) BEKK (Baba-Engle-Kraft-Kroner) model framework. Major findings are as follows. Throughout the 6 model estimation results of variance equations determining return spillovers covered from symmetric and asymmetric models of total sample period and two crisis sub-sample periods composed of Korean FX Crisis Times and Global Financial Crisis Times, shock spillovers are shown to exist mainly from stock market return shocks. Stock market shocks including down-shocks from the asymmetric models are shown to transfer to those other two markets most successfully. Therefore it is most important to maintain stable financial markets that a policy design for stock market stabilization such as mitigating stock market volatility.

The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Absorptive Capabilities on the Economic Growth of the Lao People's Democratic Republic

  • The paper examines the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the economic growth of Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) between 1993 and 2015. The investigation is based on the influence of growth and economic absorptive capability determinants such as human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality. The methodological analysis uses a multivariate framework accounting capital stock, labor stock, FDI, human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality in regression of the Vector Autoregressive model. Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test, Johansen Cointegration test, and Granger Causality test were applied as parts of the econometric time-series analysis approach. The empirical results demonstrate the positive effects of FDI and trade openness, and the negative effects of human capital and institutional quality on the economic growth of the Lao PDR over the 1993 to 2015 period. The findings confirm that trade openness complemented by a sufficient level of infrastructure, education, quality institutions, and transparency significantly influence economic growth and attract more FDI. Research results lend credence to the need for the Lao PDR's government to focus on improving its economic absorptive capability and economic competitiveness regionally and globally by improving wealth and resource management strategies, as failure to take this course of action could lead to the Dutch Disease effects.

Carbon dioxide emissions, GDP per capita, industrialization and population: An evidence from Rwanda

  • The study makes an attempt to investigate the causal nexus between carbon dioxide emissions, GDP per capita, industrialization and population with an evidence from Rwanda by employing a time series data spanning from 1965 to 2011 using the autoregressive distributed lag model. Evidence from the study shows that carbon dioxide emissions, GDP per capita, industrialization and population are co-integrated and have a long-run equilibrium relationship. Evidence from the Granger-causality shows a unidirectional causality running from industrialization to GDP per capita, population to carbon dioxide emissions, population to GDP per capita and population to industrialization. Evidence from the long-run elasticities has policy implications for Rwanda; a 1% increase in GDP per capita will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 1.45%, while a 1% increase in industrialization will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 1.64% in the long-run. Increasing economic growth in Rwanda will therefore reduce environmental pollution in the long-run which appears to support the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. However, industrialization leads to more emissions of carbon dioxide, which reduces environment, health and air quality. It is noteworthy that the Rwandan Government promotes sustainable industrialization, which improves the use of clean and environmentally sound raw materials, industrial process and technologies.
