  • Random beanforming exploits multiuser diversity gain in static channels. Since the gain is restricted by the user population, some extended works have been proposed. Among them, a codebook-based opportunistic beamforming technique forms multiple random beams with small pilots. The technique however has difficulty in designing beams flexibly by the channel statistics. In this paper, we propose a technique forming the multiple random beams by rotating codebooks. The proposed technique enables the flexible design of beams so that multiuser diversity and beam selection diversity are exploited simultaneously with small pilots robust to the channel statistics.

  • To implement high-order multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MU-MIMO) for massive MIMO systems, there must be a feedback scheme that can warrant its performance with a limited signaling overhead. The interference-to-noise ratio can be a basis for a novel form of Codebook (CB)-based MU-MIMO feedback scheme. The objective of this paper is to verify such a scheme's performance under a practical system configuration with a 3D channel model in various radio environments. We evaluate the performance of various CB-based feedback schemes with different types of overhead reduction approaches, providing an experimental ground with which to optimize a CB-based MU-MIMO feedback scheme while identifying the design constraints for a massive MIMO system.

  • In this paper, a low complexity subcarrier allocation scheme is proposed for multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems with zero-forcing beamformer (ZFBF) so that the total transmit power can be minimized satisfying given target data rate. Since the optimal method requires very high computational complexity, we propose a low complextiy suboptimal method. Using the fact that the effective channel gain is proportional to the orthogonallity of channels of multiplexed users, a user set with the highest orthogonality of channel among users is assigned to each subcarrier in order to minimize required transmit power. The numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal method can reduce computational complexity with little performance loss.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of normalized SNR based proportional fair scheduling with partial feedback information for multiuser MIMO-OFDMA systems. The closed form expression on the downlink capacity of the selective partial CQI feedback scheme is derived and its asymptotic behavior is investigated. From the performance analysis and numerical results, it is found that the optimal growth rate of downlink capacity can be achieved with bounded average feedback overhead irrespective of the number of users.

  • Recent exploration of smart-phone user is fueling the deployment of long term evolution (LTE) service that offers higher data rates service over 3G HSPA networks. In particular, Korea, mobile powerhouse, recently launched the service of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) which is the latest release in LTE standard. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology is the one of key enablers for LTE and LTE-A for achieving high data rate. MIMO technology has received much attention since it is possible to achieve channel capacity in proportion to the number of antennas without increasing frequency and power. In this paper, we overview of the theoretical background of MIMO technology regarding from single-user MIMO, multiuser MIMO, and massive MIMO and design considerations to implement the communication system.

  • Recently, there are many user selection algorithms in multi user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. One of well-known user selection methods is Semi orthogonal user selection (SUS). It is an algorithm maximizing channel capacity. However, it is applicable only when user's antenna is one. We propose a generalized user selection algorithm regardless of the number of user's antennas. In the proposed scheme, Base station (Bs) selects the first user who has the highest determinant of channel and generates a user group that correlation with first user's channel is less than allowance of correlation. Then, each determinant of channels made up of first user's channel and a user's channel in the generated group is calculated and BS selects the next user who has the highest determinant of that. BS selects following users by repeating above procedure. In this paper, we get better performance because of selecting users who have the highest determinant of channel as well as allowance of correlation optimally calculated through matrix operations.

  • In this paper, we analyze average capacity of an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative communication system model in multi-relay multiuser networks. In contrast to conventional cooperative networks, relays in the considered network have no embedded energy supply. They need to rely on the energy harvested from the signals broadcasted by the source for their cooperative information transmission. Based on this structure, a two-step selection scheme is proposed considering both channel state information (CSI) and battery status of relays. Assuming each relay has infinite or finite energy storage for accumulating the energy, we use the infinite or finite Markov chain to capture the evolution of relay batteries and certain simplified assumptions to reduce computational complexity of the Markov chain analysis. The approximate closed-form expressions for the average capacity of the proposed scheme are derived. All theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations. The impacts of the system parameters, such as relay or user number, energy harvesting threshold and battery size, on the capacity performance are extensively investigated. Results show that although the performance of our scheme is inferior to the optimal joint selection scheme, it is still a practical scheme because its complexity is much lower than that of the optimal scheme.

  • Due to the difficulty of coordination in the cellular uplink, it is a practical challenge how to achieve the optimal throughput scaling with distributed scheduling. In this paper, we propose a distributed and opportunistic user scheduling (DOUS) that achieves the optimal throughput scaling in a single-input multiple-output interfering multiple-access channel, i.e., a multi-cell uplink network, with M antennas at each base station (BS) and N users in a cell. In a distributed fashion, each BS adopts M random receive beamforming vectors and then selects M users such that both sufficiently large desired signal power and sufficiently small generating interference are guaranteed. As a main result, it is proved that full multiuser diversity gain can be achieved in each cell when a sufficiently large number of users exist. Numerical evaluation confirms that in a practical setting of the multi-cell network, the proposed DOUS outperforms the existing distributed user scheduling algorithms in terms of sum-rate.
