In this paper, we propose a time-varying modified minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector for the detection of higher data rate signals in a multirate asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system which is signaled in a fast Rayleigh fading channel. The interference viewed by a higher data rate symbol will be periodic due to the presence of a lower data rate symbol which spans multiple higher data rate symbols. The detection is carried out on the basis of a modified MMSE criterion which incorporates differential detection and the ratio of channel coefficients in two consecutive observation intervals inherently compensating the fast variation of the channel due to fading. The numerical results obtained by the MMSE detector with time-varying detection show around 3 dB (M=2) and 6 dB (M=4) performance improvement at a BER of $10^{-3}$ in the AWGN channel, while introducing more computational complexity than the MMSE detector without time-varying detection. At a higher $E_b/N_0$, the proposed scheme can achieve a BER of approximately $10^{-3}$ in the presence of fast channel variation which is an improvement over other schemes.

In this paper, we propose a collision avoidance scheduling to increase the multiuser diversity gains in the adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. The scheduling policy is based on the minimum collision criterion which investigates the differences of user channels. The paper includes the derivation of capacity expressions for the adaptive OFDMA system with the proposed scheduling. The analysis shows that the capacity of the system depends on the number of collisions between the selected users to be simultaneously served. Numerical results show that the proposed scheduling provides improved capacity performance over existing ones.

Lenstra-Lenstra-$Lov{\acute{a}}sz$ (LLL) is an effective receiving algorithm for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, which is believed can achieve full diversity in MIMO detection of fading channels. However, the LLL algorithm features polynomial complexity and shows poor performance in terms of convergence. The reduction of algorithmic complexity and the acceleration of convergence are key problems in optimizing the LLL algorithm. In this paper, a variant of the LLL algorithm, the Hybrid-Fix-and-Round LLL algorithm, which combines both fix and round measurements in the size reduction procedure, is proposed. By utilizing fix operation, the algorithmic procedure is altered and the size reduction procedure is skipped by the hybrid algorithm with significantly higher probability. As a consequence, the simulation results reveal that the Hybrid-Fix-and-Round-LLL algorithm carries a faster rate of convergence compared to the original LLL algorithm, and its algorithmic complexity is at most one order lower than original LLL algorithm in real field. Comparing to other families of LLL algorithm, Hybrid-Fix-and-Round-LLL algorithm can make a better compromise in performance and algorithmic complexity.

A practical iterative channel estimation technique is proposed for the multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system in the high-speed mobile environment, such as high speed railway scenario. In the iterative algorithm, the Kalman filter and data detection are jointed to estimate the time-varying channel, where the detection error is considered as part of the noise in the Kalman recursion in each iteration to reduce the effect of the detection error propagation. Moreover, the employed Kalman filter is from the canonical state space model, which does not include the parameters of the autoregressive (AR) model, so the proposed method does not need to estimate the parameters of AR model, whose accuracy affects the convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed method is robust to the fast time-varying channel, and it can obtain more gains compared with the available methods.

ISDN provides mB+1D channel to users. An AO/D1 scheme means D-channel can be used for a permanent low speed connection. When user needs more bandwidth for high speed transfer, the AO/D1 scheme automatically provide greater capacity in the shape of ISDN B-channels. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the AO/D1 scheme with multiple ON-OFF sources in ISDN. We consider multiple ON-OFF sources connected through mB+1D ISDN link. Without the AO/D1 scheme, the required bandwidth will be the sum of peak bandwidth of all sources. With the implementation of the AO/D1 scheme, the required bandwidth is reduced to what is really needed.

In this study, we investigate the physical layer secrecy performance of RF energy harvesting (EH) networks over Rayleigh fading channels. The RF-EH system considered here consists of one power transfer station, one source, one destination, and multiple passive eavesdroppers. The source harvests energy from the power transfer station and transmits the information to the destination by using a time switching-based relaying protocol. The eavesdroppers try to extract the transmitted information without an active attack. By using the statistical characteristics of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the exact closed-form expressions of the existence probability of the secrecy capacity and the secrecy outage probability are derived. Further, we analyze the secrecy performance of the system with respect to various system parameters, such as the location of the system elements and the number of eavesdroppers. Finally, the equivalent Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to confirm the correctness of our calculations.
A high step-down multiple-output LED driver is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the derivation of the driver with dual-output is presented and its operation principle and steady state performance are analyzed in detail. Secondly, a high step-down N-channel LED driver is proposed and its current auto-balance characteristic and step-down ratio are analyzed. Finally, an experimental prototype is built and the experimental results are given. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed driver has the following virtues: First, if load balancing is achieved, the voltage gain is 1/N that of a Buck driver, where N is the number of channels. Second, each output automatically has an equal output current, without requiring more current close-loop control circuits than a Buck driver. Last, the voltage stresses of the switches and diodes are lower than those of a Buck driver, meaning that lower voltage switches and diodes can be used, and a higher efficiency can be expected.

It is well known that Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems offer the promise of achieving very high spectrum efficiencies (many tens of bit/s/Hz) in a mobile environment. The gains in MIMO capacity are sensitive to the presence of spatial and temporal correlation introduced by the radio environment. In this paper, we examine how MIMO capacity is influenced by a number of factors e.g., a) temporal correlation b) various combinations of low/high spatial correlations at either end, c) combined spatial and temporal correlations. In all cases, we compare the channel capacity that would be achievable under independent fading. We investigate the behaviour of "capacity fades," examine how often the capacity experiences the fades, develop a method to determine level crossing rates and average fade durations and relate these to antenna numbers. We also evaluate the influence of channel correlation on the capacity autocorrelation and assess the fit of a Gaussian random process to the temporal capacity sequence. Finally we note that the particular spatial correlation structure of the MIMO channel is influenced by a large number of factors. For simplicity, it is desirable to use a single overall correlation measure which parameterizes the effect of correlation on capacity. We verify this single parameter concept by simulating a large number of different spatially correlated channels.
Precoding in the multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system is investigated. In conventional wideband precoding (WBP), only one precoder, obtained from the decomposition of the subcarrier independent channel matrix, is used for all subcarriers. With an investigation of the relationship between the subcarrier independent channel matrix and the temporal/frequency channels, an improved WBP scheme is proposed for practical scenarios in which a part of subcarriers are allocated to a user. The improved WBP scheme is a generalized scheme of which narrow-band precoding and conventional WBP schemes are special modes. Simulation results demonstrate that the improved WBP scheme almost achieves the optimum performance of a single precoder and outperforms the conventional WBP scheme in terms of the bit error ratio and ergodic capacity with slight complexity increase. The largest advantage of the improved WBP scheme on signal-to-noise ratio in simulation results is over 2.1 dB.

This paper proposes a novel active noise control (ANC) approach that uses an IIR filter and neural network techniques to effectively reduce interior noise. We construct a multiple-channel IIR filter module which is a linearly augmented framework with a generic IIR model to generate a primary control signal. A three-layer perceptron neural network is employed for establishing a secondary-path model to represent air channels among noise fields. Since the IIR module and neural network are connected in series, the output of an IIR filter is transferred forward to the neural model to generate a final ANC signal. A gradient descent optimization based learning algorithm is analytically derived for the optimal selection of the ANC parameter vectors. Moreover, re-estimation of partial parameter vectors in the ANC system is proposed for online learning. Lastly, we present the results of a numerical study to test our ANC methodology with realistic interior noise measurement obtained from Korean railway trains.
