In this paper, configuration of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level boost DC-link cascade based reversing voltage multilevel inverter (BDCLCRV MLI) is proposed for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) applications. It consists of three level boost converter, level generation unit and full bridge circuit for polarity generation. When compared with conventional boost cascaded H-bridge MLI configurations, the proposed system results in reduction of DC sources, reduced power switches and gate drive requirements. Inverter switching is accomplished by providing appropriate switching angles that is generated by any optimization switching angle techniques. Here, round modulation control (RMC) method is taken as the optimization method and switching angles are derived and the same is compared with various switching angles methods i.e., equal-phase (EP) method, and half-equal-phase (HEP) method which results in improved quality of obtained AC power with lowest total harmonic distortion (THD). Reduction in DC sources and switch count makes the system more cost effective. A simulation and prototype model of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level BDCLCRV MLI system is developed and its performance is analyzed for various operating conditions.
In probabilistic design, the challenge is to estimate the uncertainty propagation, since outputs of subsystems at lower levels could constitute inputs of other systems or at higher levels of the multilevel systems. Three uncertainty propagation estimation techniques are compared in this paper in terms of numerical efficiency and accuracy: root sum square (linearization), distribution-based moment approximation, and Taguchi-based integration. When applied to reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) under uncertainty, it is investigated which type of applications each method is best suitable for. Two nonlinear analytical examples and one vehicle crashworthiness for side-impact simulation example are employed to investigate the unique features of the presented techniques for uncertainty propagation. This study aims at helping potential users to identify appropriate techniques for their applications in the multilevel design.

A procedure of stress and strength analysis has been proposed for the centrifuge rotor of composite materials of quasi-isotropic laminates. The goal in this study is to maximize the allowable rotating speed, that is, to minimize maximum strength ratio with the given path length by changing the geometric parameter-outer radius and ply angles in quasi-isotropic laminates. Optimum values of the geometric parameter-outer radius and ply angles are obtained by multilevel optimization. All the geometric dimensions and stresses are normalized such that the result can be extended to a general case. Two dimensional analysis at each cross section with an elliptic tube hole subjected to internal hydrostatic pressures by samples as well as the centrifugal body forces has been performed along the height to calculate the stress distribution with the plane stress assumption, and Tsai-Wu failure criterion is used to calculate the strength ratio. The maximum allowable rotating speed can be increased by changing the radii of the outer surface along the height with the maximum strength ratio under the unit value : The optimal number of ply angles maximizing the allowable rotating speed in quasi-isotropic laminates is found to be the half number of tube hole, and the optimal laminate rotation angle is the half of $[{\pi}/m]$. A $[{\pi}/3]$ laminate, for instance, is stronger than a $[{\pi}/4]$ laminate for the centrifuge rotor of 6 tube hole number even though they have the same stiffness.
This paper presents a technique for estimating distribution of data stored in a database. This technique is very useful for accurate selectivity estimation, which is essential in query optimization and physical database design. To maintain data distribution, we employ the directory of the multilevel grid file, a multidimensional dynamic file organization. The major advantage of our technique is that data distribution information is maintained dynamically in the multilevel grid file. In contrast, other static methods such as the histogram method use static date structures, which requires periodic restructuring. Furthermore, we propose a method for keeping the abstract information of data distribution in main memory. This is advantageous in the situation where the size of main memory is not sufficient. Finally, We also suggest formulas for calculating selectivies of various queries based on our data distribution information.
Substructuring-based hierarchical approach for design analysis and optimization of structural frames is presented in this study. The conceptual framework of this method is in the hierarchical modeling for design processes as well as structural systems and the methodology combining substructuring analysis and multilevel optimization. Mathematical models for analysis and synthesis are established on the common basis of substructuring systems. Modularized behavioral analysis, design sensitivity analysis and optimization are linked and integrated on the mathematical and structural basis of substructuring. Substructures are coordinated with the active constraints for system level and the weight ratio criteria. Numerical examples for test frames show the validity and effectiveness of the present approach.
Multi-level Multi-objective optimization(MLMO) for reinforced concrete framed structure is performed, and compared with the results of single-level single-objective optimization. MLMO method allows flexibility to meet the design needs such as deflection and cost of structures using weighting factors. Using Multi-level formulation, the numbers of constraints and variables are reduced at each levels, and the optimization formulation becomes simplified. The force approximation method is used to reflect the variation in design variables between the substructures, and thus coupling is maintained. And the linear approximated constraints and objective function are used to reduce the number of structural analysis in optimization process. It is shown that the developed algorithm with move limit can converge effectively to optimal solution.
The growth of telemedicine-based wireless communication for images-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT)-leads to the necessity of learning the concept of image compression. Over the years, the transform based and spatial based compression techniques have attracted many types of researches and achieve better results at the cost of high computational complexity. In order to overcome this, the optimization techniques are considered with the existing image compression techniques. However, it fails to preserve the original content of the diagnostic information and cause artifacts at high compression ratio. In this paper, the concept of histogram based multilevel thresholding (HMT) using entropy is appended with the optimization algorithm to compress the medical images effectively. However, the method becomes time consuming during the measurement of the randomness from the image pixel group and not suitable for medical applications. Hence, an attempt has been made in this paper to develop an HMT based image compression by utilizing the opposition based improved harmony search algorithm (OIHSA) as an optimization technique along with the entropy. Further, the enhancement of the significant information present in the medical images are improved by the proper selection of entropy and the number of thresholds chosen to reconstruct the compressed image.
To reach a better foundation treatment project, an optimized analysis of composite foundation was studied in the field of hydraulic engineering. Its unique characteristics in hydraulic engineering were concluded. And, the overall and detailed analysis of the composite foundation model established was carried out. A new optimization procedure with approximate reanalysis module, using the staged hybrid methods with substructuring, is proposed in is study. In this procedure, displacements are calculated with two step mixed procedures. First step is to introduce the conservative approximation, which is a hybrid form of the linear and reciprocal approximation, as local approximation. In the next step, it is combined with the global approximation by reduced basis approach. The quality of reanalyzed quantities can be greatly improved through these staged hybrid approximations, specially for large changes in the design. Overall procedures are based on substructuring scheme. Several numerical examples illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed methods.
A novel optical hybrid device that doubles the multilevel demodulation resolution by adding the optical interferometer with a waveguide crossover is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. We report two types of all-passive phase control schemes that will be referred to as a phase compensation scheme and a phase optimization scheme. We also apply the proposed phase control schemes to a 45° optical hybrid consisting of two parallel 90° optical hybrids together with the proposed phase control scheme for demodulating 8-level differential phase shift keying optical signals. Octagonal phase response with low wavelength sensitive excess loss of <0.8 dB over 31-nm-wide spectral range will be demonstrated in the InP-based material platform.
