Many research of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) has been performed under the condition of steady state loading. However, mechanical elements undergo severe high loads that are in the fluctuating modes of frequency and amplitude. Conventional numerical method for the circular contact of EHL study has the difficulty in making the film thickness and pressure of EHL converged in high loads of steady state as well as fluctuating loading conditions. In this work, multigrid multilevel method are used for the stable convergence of film pressure and thickness under the conditions of high as well as varying loads, and very stable solutions of film behaviors with elastic deformation are obtained. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition in the aspects of circular EHL film thickness and pressure.

In this work, multigrid multilevel method expels the convergence problem under the condition of high load and very stable convergence is obtained under the dynamic loading condition over 1.0GPa. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition.

디젤 엔진의 푸쉬로드 타입의 밸브 트레인에서의 힘의 전달 과정을 기구학적 응용을 통하여 구하였다. 이러한 힘의 최종 전달 단계인 캠과 평판 종동물의 접촉에서의 작용하중과 상대 운동 속도를 계산하였고 접촉면에서의 유막 두께를 고체면의 탄성변형을 고려하여 계산하였다. 특히 탄성 유체 윤활의 해석을 하는데 있어서 안정성과 수렴성이 우수한 멀티그리드 멀티레벨 기법을 사용하였으며 동하중 상태를 고려하여 유막 두께를 계산하고 기존의 정상상태의 해석해와 비교하였다.

Many researches about the contacts between cam and follower have investigated EHL film thickness either without dynamic loading effect or only with curve fitting formula such as Dowson-Hamrock's, because including squeeze film effect makes it hard to obtain convergence and stability of computation. Therefore, inaccurate information about minimum film thickness without dynamic loading condition causes inappropriate design of cam profiles and wrong selection of cam and follower materials. In this work, computation tools both for kinematics and dynamics of valve train system of push-rod type and for fluid film thickness with elastic deformation on the basis of dynamic loading condition with multigrid multi-level method is developed. The computational results of minimum film thickness with the respects of both static and dynamic loading conditions are compared for the contact of flat follower over the entire cycle.

The conventional analysis for the numerical computation of fluid film thickness with elastic deformation of contact region. is performed by Newton-Rephson method for its 18st convergence characteristics. However, both high load and relatively low sliding velocity frequently make it impossible for Newton-Rahpson method to get both converged and stable solutions. In particular, this method cannot provide converged Solution under the condition of high load above 1.0 GPa which frequently occurs in line contact of EHL problem. Multigird multi-level method for the solver of non-linear partial differential equation including solid deformation is preferred to Newton-Rshpson method for better convergence and stability and is applied to line contact EHL behavior in this study.

In this paper, we present a new multilevel in space and energy diffusion (MSED) method for solving multigroup diffusion eigenvalue problems. The MSED method can be described as a PI scheme with three additional features: (1) a grey (one-group) diffusion equation used to efficiently converge the fission source and eigenvalue, (2) a space-dependent Wielandt shift technique used to reduce the number of PIs required, and (3) a multigrid-in-space linear solver for the linear solves required by each PI step. In MSED, the convergence of the solution of the multigroup diffusion eigenvalue problem is accelerated by performing work on lower-order equations with only one group and/or coarser spatial grids. Results from several Fourier analyses and a one-dimensional test code are provided to verify the efficiency of the MSED method and to justify the incorporation of the grey diffusion equation and the multigrid linear solver. These results highlight the potential efficiency of the MSED method as a solver for multidimensional multigroup diffusion eigenvalue problems, and they serve as a proof of principle for future work. Our ultimate goal is to implement the MSED method as an efficient solver for the two-dimensional/three-dimensional coarse mesh finite difference diffusion system in the Michigan parallel characteristics transport code. The work in this paper represents a necessary step towards that goal.

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis shows that film thickness is very flat in the contact area and pressure distribution is somehow similar to that of Hertzian contact pressure except the outlet region with pressure spike. These typical patterns of EHL film thickness and pressure are the cases under the steady contact conditions of applied loads and speeds. However, many engineering contacts are rather under the conditions of varying loads and contact speeds, and therefore the predictions for endurance life and performance of machine elements with steady EHL analysis are not suitable in many occasions. This study shows the differences in film thickness formation and pressure distribution between steady and transient contact conditions in several contact cases.

Continuously variable transmission (CVT) of toroidal type has a elliptical shape of contact zone under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) condition, where the power is transmitted only by shearing the lubricant. Due to the small contact area of elliptical shape, the traction of the shear behaviors of lubricant over the contact zone is under extremely high contact pressure over 1.0GPa. During the power transmission by shearing the fluid, many kinds of mechanical movements occur such as squeezing, sliding, rolling and spin. Among the movements, the spin effect that is the most undesirable contact behavior in transmitting the power frequently makes significant abnormal wear damage. In this work, the analysis of elliptical contact of EHL with spin effect is performed, which will give very useful information to understand the traction behaviors in toroidal type of CVT system.

Acceleration/preconditioning strategies available in the SCEPTRE radiation transport code are described. A flexible transport synthetic acceleration (TSA) algorithm that uses a low-order discrete-ordinates ($S_N$) or spherical-harmonics ($P_N$) solve to accelerate convergence of a high-order $S_N$ source-iteration (SI) solve is described. Convergence of the low-order solves can be further accelerated by applying off-the-shelf incomplete-factorization or algebraic-multigrid methods. Also available is an algorithm that uses a generalized minimum residual (GMRES) iterative method rather than SI for convergence, using a parallel sweep-based solver to build up a Krylov subspace. TSA has been applied as a preconditioner to accelerate the convergence of the GMRES iterations. The methods are applied to several problems involving electron transport and problems with artificial cross sections with large scattering ratios. These methods were compared and evaluated by considering material discontinuities and scattering anisotropy. Observed accelerations obtained are highly problem dependent, but speedup factors around 10 have been observed in typical applications.
