Tangible Cooperation in Shared Virtual Environment

  • Recent advanced technologies enable multiple users to share the virtual environment and work together as they are collocated. Additional sensory information such as haptic could improve the cooperation. In this paper, we propose a server-client architecture with multi-rate haptic control to support a tangible cooperation. Using our approach, the system is able to maintain a consistent simulation state across multiple users as well as to provide a highfidelity stable haptic interaction. To verify our approach, we have developed an experimental application and tested the cooperation among multiple users. The results confirm that our system is able to provide coherency among clients as well as haptic transparency.

Multi-Channel Vibrotactile Display for Teleoperated Assembly

  • This paper presents the design and testing of a multi-channel vibrotactile display. It is composed of a cylindrical handle with four embedded vibrating elements driven by piezoelectric beams. Vibrations are transmitted to the hands through arrays of pins. The device was tested in sensory substitution for conveying force information during a teleoperated peg insertion. Results show that the device is effective in reducing peak forces during the insertion task.

  • This paper aims to provide a multi-dimensional integrative model that can give a comprehensive account for human space experience. Human space experience is too complicated phenomenon, so space designer need to understand about mechanism of space cognition. From psychological point of view, I analyze the mechanism that is based on emotional reaction. This model consist of three dimensions: sensory, reflexive, and reflective dimension. Assuming this model, we have attempt the typological analysis to the space by studying human space experience. Finally, the outcome provides how space designer use this effect for application of human experience.

The effects of Breif, Intense Transecutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation on Nerve conduction, Pain Threshold in Healthy subjects (Brief, Intense TENS 자극이 신경전도, 통증역치의 변화에 미치는 효과)

  • Purphose. This present study examines the effect of brief, intense transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(BTENS) on sensory nerve conduction, electrical pain threshold, and two-point discrimination measured at the superficial radial nevre distribution in 20 healthy subjects. Subjects. Twenty volunteercs, (10 females and 10 males(age range : 20-38 years : $mean{\pm}SD\;:\;27.00{\pm}5.12$), only subjects without prior traumatological and pathological were eligible to participated in this study. Methods. Nerve conduction were determined for the right superficial radial nerve. Electrical pain threshold were determined for the right wrist ipsilateral to the site of BTENS. Small disc electrodes were attached to the surface of the skin stradding the end of the radius. Square wave electrical pulses were delivered from an isolated stimulator through a constant current device at a frequency of 2 Hz(5 ms pulse width). Two-point discrimination, measured on the sensory distribution of superficial radial nerve. BTENS was delivered using a Max-SD( Medical design co.) portable battery powered stimulator. A cicular Ag/AgCl electrode in contact with hypertonic saline gel was attached to the lateral(radial side) surface of the forearm. Results. No significant effects were observed between stimulation methods in the prestimulation cycle(multi-way ANOVA repeated measures : distal latency ; F1.14=0.332. amplitude ; F 0.80=0.445, pain threshold ; F0.06=0.940.2 point discrimination ; F1.50=0.236). Highly significant effects were observed time with the pretreatment and 6 posttreatment cycles(p<0.01). Mighty significants differences in nerve conduction and pain threshold were found using un multi-way ANOVA repeated measures among stimulation methods for each cycles(p<0.01). Conclusion and Discussion The authors concludes that both nerve conduction and pain threshold changes are associated with therapy (stimulation) level of BTENS.

The effect of the appropriateness of gustatory features in 'multi-sensory' product design on product evaluation : An fMRI study (공감각 제품디자인의 미각적 요소와 제품과의 적합성이 제품평가에 미치는 영향 : fMRI를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the appropriateness of gustatory features in product design affect product evaluation and accompanied response by using functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). Through the pilot survey, we categorized the product designs into two groups based on the level of the appropriateness. The total of 40 product designs were selected as the experimental stimuli. 15 right-handed participants(mean age = 23.33, SD = 1.7) were scanned with 3T MRI machine(ISOL Tech, Oxford OR63). The experimental stimuli were passively presented inside the scanner. In post scanning session, participants were asked to measure their preference and buying intention to the product designs. The results show that both the preference and buying intention were significantly higher for the high appropriateness condition compared to those of low appropriateness designs. Caudate nucleus and putamen, areas related to the positive reward such as monetary acquisition showed greater activation in response to the designs of high appropriateness condition, compared to the low appropriateness designs.

  • We are suggesting an authoring tool can be used for prototyping in the augmented reality based product design environment. This tool is for authors without an engineering background to use. Our authoring tool can adjust the properties of visual, sound, and haptic feedback at the same time for more practical prototyping. Also the proposed modulated architecture can be applied flexibly to changes of platforms or hardware. Also user interfaces can be dynamically updated by changing just description files. finally, the suggested authoring methods exploit the advantages of both graphical and tangible user interfaces. Authors can intuitively make adjustments to many parameters using the TUI, and then they can do the same thing precisely using the GVI. The proposed authoring methods can be used for exhibition and entertainment contents using multi-sensory feedback in AR environment. As a future work, qualitative and quantitative usability test will be conducted.

  • In this study, we explored the characteristics of a Chinese cabbage kimchi sauce, which was made from natural pigments, according to the preservation period. There were no significant changes in pH and total acidity and the color of the sauce with added natural pigments demonstrated stability. Also, vitamin C and the change of viscosity decreased as the preservation period increased. A although the number of lactic acid bacteria decreased over a 20 day period, a certain level was sustained for 91 days. Lastly, the sensory properties of the sauce were not significantly different according to the preservation period.

  • In this paper, we introduce smart home service based on ubiquitous environment and context awareness. We define the multi- context environment and the context collision caused by many user that the existing study of smart home is unconcerned with. Heal home is the space where various contexts are created and disappeared in. Smart home appliances are restricted within their service. We divide the home space by main uses of rooms and group smart service by sensory organ. And we introduce the multi-context manager consist with context interpreter, context collision manager and smart service manager.

  • Based on Merleau-Ponty and Lakoff's research on the inseparability of body and mind, this thesis seeks to explore the impact of experiences in multi-layered spaces based on media art on the understanding of human existence. The sensory experience provided by media art strengthens the viewer's physical presence and induces a new perception of reality by blurring the boundaries between reality and virtuality. Through this, it shows that it is possible to newly recognize and explore the deep relationship between human existence and the world. This paper analyzes how media art can be an important means of expanding existential experience through the connection between body and mind, and explains how the combination of art and technology contributes to ontological understanding.

The Impact of Online and Offline Wine Purchase Channels on Consumer Perceptions of Wine Attributes and Repurchase Intention

  • Purpose - This study investigates the effects consumer perceptions of wine attributes have on repurchase intention. It examineshow wine purchase channels (online or offline) influence perceptions about wine attributes and repurchase intention. Research design, data, and methodology - A total of 390 responses from Florida residents over 21 were collected using online surveys. Responses were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis to identify the underlying wine attribute factors. Multiple regression and multi-group analysis were employed to test the hypotheses. Results - Results revealed that consumer perceptions of wine attributes (sensory, origin, reputation, and price point) significantly influence their repurchase intention. Additionally, the effects of wine attributes on repurchase intentions were found to be significantly different based on the channel used. Findings indicated that wine attributes pertaining to reputation and price point strongly influenced repurchase behavior of online consumers, while offline wine consumers were influenced more by sensory and origin attributes. Conclusions - Study findings provide useful information for wine industry sales channels for developing new marketing strategies to effectively attract wine consumers to repurchase wine.
