  • We investigate design-based variance estimation methods of homogeneous linear estimator for population total under stratified multi-stage sampling. One method is unbiasedly estimating the first stage variance and the second stage variance separately in each stratum. And another is sub-sampling method that estimating the first stage variance only by using sub-sample selected from the second stage sample so that resulting estimator is unbiased for the total variance. The first is useful when the second stage unbiased estimator is available and the second is when the second stage variance is not estimable. For each case, we proposed a form of non-negative unbiased variance estimator. We expect the proposed variance estimation methods can be effectively used for many practical surveys.

  • Astochastic finite element model which reflects both the effect of discontinuities and the uncertainty of material properties in underground rock mass has been developed. Latin Hypercube Sampling technique has been mobilized and compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method. To consider the effect of discontinuities, the joint finite element model, which is known to be suitable to explain faults, cleavage, things of that nature, has been used in this study. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, multi-random variables are assumed as the joint normal stiffness and the joint shear stiffness, which could be simulated in terms of normal distribution. The developed computer program in this study has been verified by practical example and has been applied to analyze the circular cavern with discontinuous rock mass.

  • This paper proposed a novel compressed sensing (CS) technique for an efficient video transmission of multi-copter. The proposed scheme is focused on reduction of the amount of data based on CS technology. First, we describe basic principle of Spectrum sensing. And then we compare AMP(Approximate Message Passing) with CoSaMP(Compressive Sampling Matched Pursuit) through mathematical analysis and simulation results. They are evaluated in terms of calculation time and complexity, then the promising algorithm is suggestd for multicopter operation. The result of experiment in this paper shows that AMP algorithm is more efficient than CoSaMP algorithm when it comes to calculation time and image error probability.

  • Rainfall observation using rain gage network or satellites includes the sampling error depending on the observation methods or plans. For example, the sampling using rain gages is continuous in time but discontinuous in space, which is nothing but the source of the sampling error. The sampling using satellites is the reverse case that continuous in space and discontinuous in time. The sampling error may be quantified by use of the temporal-spatial characteristics of rainfall and the sampling design. One of recent works on this problem was done by North and Nakamoto (1989), who derived a formulation for estimating the sampling error based on the temporal-spatial rainfall spectrum and the design scheme. The formula enables us to design an optimal rain gage network or a satellite operation plan providing the statistical characteristics of rainfall. In this paper the formula is reviewed and applied for the sampling error problems using several multi-dimensional precipitation models. The results show the limitation of the formulation, which cannot distinguish the model difference in case the model parameters can reproduce similar second order statistics of rainfall. The limitation can be improved by developing a new way to consider the higher order statistics, and eventually the probability density function (PDF) of rainfall.

  • The purpose of this research is to identify factors affecting the acceptance and use of e-tax services among medium taxpayers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The researcher conducted the study based on a quantitative approach by using multi-stage sampling method, which selects a sample size by two or more stages. The first stage sampling was the stratified random sampling and the subsequent stage was purposive sampling. In this study, the stratified random sampling was first used, followed by purposive sampling. The data were collected from 450 medium taxpayers who experienced using e-tax services located in three tax branches in Phnom Penh. This study adapted the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the model accuracy, reliability and influence of various variables. The primary result showed that behavioral intention has a significant effect on user behavior of e-tax services among medium taxpayers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Moreover, the results revealed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and anxiety have significant impact on behavioral intention. In addition, social influence has the strongest impact on behavioral intention, followed by anxiety, performance expectancy and effort expectancy. Conversely, facilitating conditions, trust in government, and trust in internet do not influence behavioral intention.

  • We propose a modified 6-node element, where the sampling point of Gauss quadrature moved in the thickness direction. The modified 6-node element has been applied to static problems and forced motion analyses. In this study, this method is extended to the finite element analysis of the natural frequencies of two dimensional problems. We also propose a modified 16-node element for three dimensional problems, which behaves much like a 20-node element with smaller degree of freedom. The modified 6-node and 16-node elements have been applied to the modal analyses of beams and plates, respectively. The results agree well with the results of the 8-node or 20-node element models.

  • In this paper, we study a joint design problem of sampling inspections and service capacities for multi-products. Products are supplied in batches after rectifying inspections, that is, rejected lots are 100% inspected and defective products are reworked to good ones. When supplied, all defective products are uncovered through total inspection and returned to service. By exploiting the first and second order properties of the objective function, we identify the optimal inspection policies and service capacities for individual products, and develop allocation algorithms to obtain an optimal allocation of the limited total service capacity to products with the small number of computations.

  • In this paper, we present a fast motion estimation algorithm to reduce the computations of block matching algorithm for motion estimation in video coding. The proposed algorithm is based on Multi-level Successive Elimination Algorithm and Efficient Multi-level Successive Elimination Algorithms. The best estimate of the motion vectors can be obtained by hierarchical search point sampling and thus the proposed algorithm can decrease the number of matching evaluations that require very intensive computations. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm was verified by experimental results.

  • A Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm samples a new point around the latest sample due to the Markov property, which prevents it from sampling from multi-modal distributions since the corresponding chain often fails to search entire support of the target distribution. In this paper, to overcome this problem, mode switching scheme is applied to the conventional MCMC algorithms. The algorithm separates the reducible Markov chain into several mutually exclusive classes and use mode switching scheme to increase mixing rate. Simulation results are given to illustrate the algorithm with promising results.

  • After every decennial census in the U.S., national surveys such as the Consumer Expenditures surveys are redesigned. The redesigned samples will be multi-stage systematic samples. Many sampling schemes have been proposed for comparison which requires the estimation and variance estiamtion formula. This paper deals with the surveys redesign research which concerns the sample design within the Primary Sampling Unit (PSU). In constructing the estimators it deals with the problem of which first stage inflation factor to use. The expected value of the proposed estimators is also derived.
