  • Objectives : We aimed to study the effect of Smilax China L.(SCL), which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects, on the growth of skin cancer cells. Methods : HaCaT cells, a normal human cell line, and skin cancer cells including A431, SK-MEL-5 and SK-MEL-28 cells were treated with Smilax China L. ethanol extract(SCL-EtOH) at concentrations of 5, 10, 20 and 40㎍/㎖. Meanwhile, JB6 Cl41, a normal mouse epithelial cell line, was treated with epidermal growth factor(EGF) and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate(TPA), an inflammatory factor, to induce cell transformation and treated with SCL-EtOH. In addition, we treated SK-MEL-5 and SK-MEL-28 cells with SCL-EtOH at various concentrations and checked the effect on the cell cycle. Results : As a result, it showed no toxicity to HaCaT cells up to the highest concentration of 40㎍/㎖, and significant cell growth inhibition to A431, SK-MEL-5 and SK-MEL-28 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In addition, as a result of checking the shape of skin cancer cells according to SCL-EtOH treatment, it was observed that as the concentration increased, the number of normally attached and growing cells decreased and the shape of the cells changed. Colony formation was significantly reduced in a concentration-dependent manner in JB6 Cl41 cells treated with EGF or TPA. Flow cytometry analysis with propidium iodide(PI) staining showed that SCL-EtOH induced the G2/M phase arrest. We further confirmed the decrease in Cyclin B1 expression and increase in p27 expression associated with the G2/M phase of the cell cycle through western blot analysis. Flow cytometry analysis confirmed that SCL-EtOH induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, through Western blot analysis, it was observed that the expression of cleaved-caspase-7, which is related to apoptosis, increased. Finally, it was confirmed that the expression of COX-2, an inflammatory marker protein, decreased in a concentration-dependent manner with SCL-EtOH. Conclusions : Through the above results, we have established a basis for applying SCL to the treatment of skin cancer.

  • Purpose: Numerous materials, both autologous and nonautologous, have been used for augmentation of sunken areas and each has its own limitations. The ideal material for augmentation should not be absorbed in any manner. This study is designed to assess the survival of $SureDerm^{(R)}$, $Permacol^{(R)}$ graft according to the volume and histologic change. Methods: Twenty four mice, weighing about 50 grams and of 5 weeks of age were used. $SureDerm^{(R)}$ is an acellular dermal matix obtained from human cadeveric skin. $Permacol^{(R)}$ is a porcine derived acellular dermal matrix whose manufacture involves trypsinisation, solvent extraction. Graft pieces standardized to $1{\times}1cm$ size were used in each group. The implanted material were taken 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks later, respectively. The changes of graft volume during the graft period were measured on initial, 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Results: The initial shape of graft was maintained up to 12 weeks in $Permacol^{(R)}$ graft group and mean survival rate was $80.36{\pm}8.21%$ in $SureDerm^{(R)}$, $89.57{\pm}6.39%$ in $Permacol^{(R)}$(p=0.01). The volume of each graft decreased 29% from initial volume on 12 weeks in $SureDerm^{(R)}$, 18% in $Permacol^{(R)}$. The structure of $Permacol^{(R)}$ remained until 12 week after implantation. Conclusion: Our experimental study suggests that $Permacol^{(R)}$ could be a safe material as an implant for permanent augmentation. However, There are further study remained for antigenicity of these material, and the choice of graft for augmentation should be remained to the clinical situations.

  • The main purpose of this study is to propose the algorithm about the extraction of the facial feature. To achieve the above goal, first of all, this study produces binary image for input color image. It calculates area after pixel labeling by variant block-units. Secondly, by contour following, circumference have been calculated. So the proper degree of resemblance about area, circumference, the proper degree of a circle and shape have been calculated using the value of area and circumference. And Third, the algorithm about the methods of extracting parameters which are about the feature of eyes, nose, and mouse using the proper degree of resemblance, general structures and characteristics(symmetrical distance) in face have been accomplished. And then the feature parameters of the front face have been extracted. In this study, twelve facial feature parameters have been extracted by 297 test images taken from 100 people, and 92.93 % of the extracting rate has been shown.

  • Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) plays a crucial role in innocuous cool sensation, acute cold pain and cold-induced hyperalgesia during pathologic conditions. To help understand TRPM8-mediated cold perception in the dental pulp and periodontal tissues, we examined the distribution of TRPM8-immunopositive (+) axons in molar and incisor pulp and periodontal tissues using transgenic mice expressing a genetically encoded axonal tracer in TRPM8+ neurons. In the radicular pulp of the molar teeth, a small number of TRPM8+ axons were observed. TRPM8+ axons branched frequently and extensively in the core of coronal pulp, forming a network in the peripheral pulp. Some TRPM8+ axons ascended between odontoblasts and were observed in the dentinal tubule. TRPM8+ axons were linear-shaped in the radicular pulp, whereas many TRPM8+ axons showed portions shaped like beads connected with thin axonal stands at the peripheral pulp. TRPM8 was densely expressed in the bead portions. In the incisor pulp, TRPM8+ axons were occasionally observed in the core of the coronal pulp and rarely observed at the peripheral pulp. TRPM8+ axons were occasionally observed and showed a linear shape rather than a bead-like appearance in the periodontal ligament and lamina propria of the gingival tissue. These findings, showing differential distribution of TRPM8+ axons between radicular and coronal portions of the molar pulp, between incisor and molar pulp, and between dental pulp and periodontal tissues, may reflect differential cold sensitivity in these regions.

  • Spline curve scheme is the most valuable tool for the CAD of industrial products. Hence, the development of a new, effective curve scheme can have immediate impact on the current design industries. This paper develops and implements a new methodology for the implementation of the visually continuous class of splines which can produce a more flexible and diverse curve shapes. This class of splines has advantaged over existing splines in that it can accommodate wider range of shapes while maintaining the interpolators property of the ordinary cardinal splines. Most importantly, we avoid using the previous method of implementing G$^1$ curves, where users must specify scalar values for the control of curve shapes. We derive and implement an easy-to -use transformation between the user-specified graphical tangent vectors and the actual parameters for the resulting curve. Since the resulting curve shape reflects original tangential direction faithfully, CAD users can simply represent approximate curve shapes with proper tangents. Consequently, a simple user interface device such as a mouse can effectively produce a various spline curves using the proposed spline tool.

  • This study investigated perceived discomfort and reasons related to use three information technology products (personal computer, mobile phone and digital television remote controller), and extracted the universal design factors. 240 people (30 females and 30 males for four age groups) participated in the one-to-one interview type of questionnaire, and replied to degree of discomfort at level of items and the reasons of discomfort at level of detailed elements for each product. As a result, almost all age groups answered that using input buttons of mobile phone and remote controller and watching display of mobile phone caused discomfort. Binary logistic regression of the detailed elements showed that response rate of discomfort mostly increased with age, except for specific elements such as shape of mouse and remote controller, and location of function button of mobile phone. Some of the detailed elements had high response rate of discomfort from all age groups. The age groups also showed similar tendency for the elements to select one alternative for the reason of discomfort, but not for sound volume and size of mobile phone and button sensitivity of remote controller. Finally, the universal design factors were extracted for each product based on the results, and divided into common factors and factors classified by the age group. Through this study, we identified using practices of various age groups and their demands for the products. It is expected that extracted detailed elements can be considered as important design factors to design the products universally.

  • We are able to work on the shared virtual space in Web-based Collaborative Design System using only Internet and Web browser. The users connect to the Solid Modeler Server through m and they create 3D shape and manipulate them variously. Then the users will share 3D objects and two problems can arise. The users must be able to pick the objects effectively which they want to manipulate. When one of the users manipulates a particular object, others should not disturb with the same object. In this paper, picking is implemented not only by computing intersection of mouse pointer with the objects of the virtual world, but also by using capabilities and attributes of scene graph node, by setting bounds intersection testing instead of geometric intersection testing, by limiting the scope of the pick testing, using Java 3D. These methods can reduce the computation of picking and can pick 3D objects effectively and easily using the system of hierarchy. To have effective concurrency, we used shared lock and exclusive lock as the action in work space.

  • In order to design and develop a ubiquitous game, it is necessary to develop a natural and flexible interface between the real world and the virtual world, based on social and physical context awareness. We design user interface model and the tactile sensing system that performs virtual interaction and collection of the sensor data. It is sensitive so the collected data should be filtered, rearranged and analyzed. This information is quite different from stylus input, keyboard, button or mouse for interaction. We detect kicked 3D force position of a ball, moment of area, moment of inertia and modified ball shape using tactile sensing system and analyzed data. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is desirable and robust as well as the results can be used realistic actions and reactions considering attack force and to make interesting environments for ubiquitous game.

  • The world is going through the most unprecedented time with the outbreak of novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has become a threat to millions. A Coronavirus is a group of viruses that cause a variety of diseases in mammals and birds leading to a range of illnesses in humans including common cold and more severe forms like severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and COVID-19, which are life-threatening. The virus gets its name from its shape which takes the form of a crown with protrusions around it. In December 2019, a pneumonia outbreak was reported in the Wuhan City of China, which was later traced to a novel strain of Coronavirus and termed as Novel COVID-19. It typically causes flu-like symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath and is transmitted through human-to-human and there is no cure for it till now. Thus, this bibliometric study has been carried out to analyze the research progress in Coronavirus and literature published during a period of 30 years (1989-2019). Data for the study were fetched from Web of Science(WoS) multidisciplinary database and the publication trends in terms of total articles, productive countries, institutions, journals, productive authors, most cited articles and authors, etc have been analyzed. In total, 4917 articles were retrieved; these were from 711 sources and were contributed by 14442 authors. The collaboration index was 3.11, which clearly indicates that there has been a lot of collaboration in this field. The most preferred journal for the study period was "Journal of Virology" and the maximum contribution has been from the University of Hong Kong.
