The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to the parental role in satisfaction and parenting behaviors. The subjects were 102 employed mothers and 110 unemployed mothers of 5-year-old children living in Seoul, Korea. The measures were questionnaire, the Parental Role Satisfaction Scale and the Parenting Behaviors Scale. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, frequency, percentile, mean, correlation, multiple regression and Chow-test. Consistent with Belsky's model of the determinants of parenting, the parental role satisfaction and parenting behaviors of both employed and unemployed mothers were influenced by child characteristics, parent characteristics, and family factors. Results showed that the parental role satisfaction of both employed and unemployed mothers was correlated to child's birth order, temperament and health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, fathers' educational level, and family income. Parenting behaviors were also correlated to sex of child, child's birth order, temperament of child, parental educational level, and family income for employed mothers and to health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, mothers' educational level, and family income for unemployed mothers. Especially, father's age for employed mothers, and child's temperament for unemployed mothers, were the most strongly related variables for parental role satisfaction. On the other hand, family income for employed mothers, and fathers' age for unemployed mothers were the most strongly related variables for parenting behaviors.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate differences in maternal role confidence and parenting stress according to the infant's feeding method. Method: The participants were 257 mothers of infants aged 5$\sim$7 months. 145 breast-feeding mothers and 112 bottle-feeding mothers participated. The Maternal Role Confidence Scale and Parenting Stress Index(PSI) were used. Results: The score of maternal role confidence of breast-feeding mothers (3.28) was significantly higher than that of bottle-feeding mothers(2.84). In addition, the parenting stress level of breast-feeding mothers(1.80) was lower than that of bottle-feeding mothers(2.97). However, the scores of maternal role confidence and the parenting stress level were not different according to the mother's and infant's personality characteristics. There was a significant negative correlation between the score of maternal role confidence and parenting stress levels(r=-.55, p<.001). Conclusion: Breast feeding mothers had more confidence of their maternal role, and a lower parenting stress level. Therefore, nurses must encourage infant mothers to breast feed since it is the best option for mothers as well as infants.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to neonatal nursing and maternal nursing to reduce parental role stress in mothers of preform babies and to improve perception of the newborn to by the parents. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires which were consisted of a parental role stress scale and a neonatal perception inventory. The subjects were 100 mothers of fullterm babies and 50 mothers of preform babies, all in the early postpartum stage and admitted to three hospitals in the Kyoung-In area between November 8, 1997 and May 30, 1998. The data were analyzed by a SPSS program and the results are as follows ; 1. There were no significantly differences in the means for parental role stress between mothers of fullterm babies and preform babies. The mean for perception of the newborn was significantly lower in mothers of preform babies than in mothers of fullterm babies. 2. In mothers of preform babies, the level of parental role stress was correlated to the one minute Apgar score. The level of perception of the newborn was correlated to gestational age and birth weight. 3. The mothers of preform babies whose education level was above graduation from college had lower parental role stress than those who had a lowes level of education. The mothers who had experienced cesarean section hd higher parental role stress than those who gave birth to their baby prematurely. The above findings indicate that mothers of preform babies had lower perception of the newborn than mothers of fullterm babies. Therefore, nursing intervention should be provided for mothers of preform babies to manage parental role stress and improve perception of the newborn.
This study was designed to explore fundamental bases of parental role satisfaction and child-rearing practices by comparing Korean and Yanbian Korean-Chinese mothers who share the same cultural roots but live in societies with different ideology and values. Total of 314 mothers with children aged from three to six years participated in this study:- 160 Korean mothers from two cities in Korea and 154 Korean-Chinese mothers from two cities at YanBian in China. Parental Satisfaction Questionnaires by Hyun (1994) and Child Rearing Practice Measures developed by the researchers were used to measure mothers parental role satisfaction and child rearing practices. The results showed that Korean-Chinese mothers seemed to be more satisfied with their roles as parents than Korean mothers. Additional analyses with socio-economic variables reported that both Korean and Korean-Chinese mothers satisfaction about spousal support were higher and their role conflicts were reduced when the household income was higher. Interestingly, most Korean-Chinese mothers reported to be highly satisfied with spousal support whereas only highly educated Korean mothers seemed to be satisfied with spousal support. In addition, for child-related variables, Korean and Korean-Chinese mothers' parental satisfaction were not affected by their childrens gender or age but when they thought their childrens temperament was difficult, their role-conflict tended to increase.
This study investigated the differences between mothers and children in their gender-role attitudes and their perceptions on gender-role socialization. The data was collected from 167 6th graders and their mothers in Seoul. Boy's gender-role attitude was found significantly different from that of mothers while girl's gender-role attitude was more consistent with that of mothers than boys. In their perceptions on gender-role socialization, mothers reported that they emphasized both feminine and masculine behavior for their children. However, children reported that their mother emphasized feminine behavior for girls and masculine behavior for boys.
This study examined the relationship between ambivalence of Korean working mothers for children and their future desire for child birth. This study examined multiple-role efficacy as a mediator in the relationship between ambivalence for their children and future desire for child birth by Korean working mothers having more than one pre-school aged child. This study examined the mediation effect of multiple-role efficacy on the relationship between ambivalence and desire for child birth by working mothers. On-line and off-line survey data from 291 Korean working mothers with more than one pre-school aged child was used for this study. Collected data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program and descriptive statistics analyses. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were conducted by AMOS 20.0 program. Results showed that ambivalence for children of working mothers having pre-school aged children had no direct influence on future child birth desire. However, their ambivalence had an indirect influence on future child birth desire through multiple-role efficacy and multiple-role efficacy by working mothers had significant effect on child birth desire. In conclusion, the working mothers' multiple-role efficacy had a mediation influence on the relationship between ambivalence for children and desire of child birth. These results were discussed for designing a policy to counter low birth.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate maternal perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role, and contribute to maternal nursing and neonatal nursing. The questionnaire, maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) was completed by 47 mothers at three hospitals in the Kyoung-In area during the first to third day after birth. The questionnaire, maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅱ), confidence and gratification of mothering role were completed at fourth to sixth week after birth. The data were analyzed by a SPSS program. The results were as follows ; 1) The means of perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ) were 2.28±4.81 and 3.83±4.84. The means of confidence and gratification of mothering role were 40.38±5.51 and 39.30±6.70. 2) Half of the mothers(48.9%) rated their newborn as better than average newborn at first to third day after birth, and 74.5% of mothers did at fourth to sixth week after birth. 3) The score of maternal perception of the newborn (Ⅰ) was significantly correlated with the score of confidence and gratification of mothering role. The score of maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅱ) was correlated with the score of confidence and gratification of mothering role. The score of confidence and gratification of mothering role was related. 4) Maternal gratification of mothering role was significantly different by maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅰ), and maternal confidence was different by maternal perception of the newborn (Ⅱ). 5) Mothers who had religions and who wanted the pregnancy had higher perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) than those who did not. Mothers whose newborns were boys had higher perception of the newborn(Ⅱ) than those whose newborns were girls. Mothers who wanted the pregnancy had higher confidence of mothering role than those who did not. Mothers who planed cow's milk had lower gratification of mothering role than those who did not. The above findings indicate that mothers who have a different level of perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role. Therefore, it is important that maternal perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role were precisely evaluated, and nursing intervention for improving perception of the newborn should be provided for mothers.
The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of coping behaviors of non-professional working mothers and find out the individual and situational factors which affect the degree of coping behaviors. For this research, the working mothers in non-professional job with children under age 18 answered the structured questionaire. The findings were as follows. First, the degree of coping behaviors was rather high in multiple role management strategies, strengthening family system and positive thinking, but rather low in housework socialization and role reduction/standard adjustment. Second, the effect of associated variables were different according to the subcategories of coping behaviors. So we conclude that, the coping behaviors of the non-professional working mothers were different from those of professional working mothers in some aspects, althought they have much similarities. The different aspects were 1) The relationship of family income and the degree of housework socialization was more evident. 2) The work-related variables did not affect the coping process significantly because of the conservative sex-role attitued of them. Second, non-professional working mothers should use coping behaviors such as housework socialization, role reduction/standard adjustment more for the more effective management of the role strain. Third, the attitude of occupational and parental role was one of the most important factors in using the role strain coping behaviors. And such an unconscious use of the coping behavior won't be helpful in the feeling of control over environment including role strain and active coping of working mothers.
This study examined how parental role stress, family cohesion, and family adaptation of mothers who have adolescent children influenced parental efficacy. The subjects were 739 mothers of 370 junior high school and 369 senior high school children. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis after analyzing the data. The results of the study were as follows. First, mothers with high incomes, high educational level, and children with high school grades saw an increase in parental efficacy. Second, there were significant positive correlations in parental role stress, family cohesion, family adaptation and the parental efficacy of mothers. Third, the results of this study showed that parental role stress, family cohesion, and family adaptation were factors to understand the parental efficacy of mothers. Family cohesion was also an important factor to understand the parental efficacy of mothers. The findings confirm that the anxiety of parental role stress for mothers who have adolescent children is not a negative factor in regards to lower parental efficacy. The findings suggest that parental education programs for mothers of adolescent children and a required social welfare system for parental roles was not recognized as a stress factor.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations among mothers' and teachers' perceptions of role-efficacy, role-efficacy, attributions, and young children's cognitive and social development. The subjects were 163 mothers and teachers of 5-year-old children attending to kindergartens in Korea. The results showed that cognitions of mothers were very similar to those of teachers. When they perceived difficulty in enhancing children's cognitive and social development, they tended to think that it would be more efficient for someone else to help the children. Children's cognitive and social development were not positive especially when the mothers and teachers showed high role-difficulty and low role-efficacy.
