The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of family related factors (mothers' self-esteem, mothers' parenting stress, mothers' marital satisfaction, fathers' parenting involvement, and social support) on mothers' postpartum depression. The subjects were 797 households that were extracted from the $1^{st}$ wave of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC). The study variables were measured using the survey questionnaires, and analyses of Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were conducted. Results showed that family related factors significantly predicted mothers' postpartum depression. Moreover, the most significant predictor was mothers' parenting stress, followed by marital satisfaction, self-esteem, fathers' parenting involvement, and social support. Study findings indicate that mothers' postpartum depression is attributed to not only personal but also family related factors. Our results suggest importance of parent education and family support along with social support.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of smartphone addiction tendency on the relationship between depression of mothers with 3 to 5 year-old children and rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Methods: Three hundred and twenty-eight mothers answered questionnaires on three research variables. To analyze the data, Pearson correlation analyses and regression analyses were conducted. Results: First, mothers' depression, smartphone addiction tendency and rejecting-neglecting parenting style showed positive correlations, respectively. Specifically, mothers with a high level of depression were more addicted to smartphones and exhibited more rejecting-neglecting style of parenting. Also, mothers who were more obsessed with smartphones showed more rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Second, this study found partial mediating effects of smartphone addiction tendency on the relationship between depression and rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed that mothers' depression and smartphone overuse had an influence on their negative parenting behaviors. The results of this study address the need of various interventions for mothers to decrease their depression and smartphone overuse.
The study is aimed at examining the interaction between mothers with high postpartum depression tendencies and their 6 to 8 month old infants. Thirty pairs of infants and mothers with high depression tendencies and another 30 pairs of infants and mothers with low depression scores on the EPDS and K-PSI were selected as the final research subjects from a total of 185 mother-child pairs. They visited a laboratory and agreed to a video-recording which focussed on their infant-mother interaction for approximately 30 minutes. In conclusion, the group of mothers with high depression tendencies showed less positive, and more intrusive interactions and their infants displayed less responsive, less positive expressions than the group of mothers with low depression tendencies. This study is meaningful in that it represents a rare attempt at a qualitative analysis research into the interactions between mothers with postpartum depression and their infants.
Purpose: Mothers' postpartum depression is a worldwide health concern that produces compromising effects on their infants. This study was conducted to compare the infants' temperament and health problems according to the presence of maternal postpartum depression. Methods: Data were collected from May to October in 2009. The sample was 137 mothers at one month postpartum. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Results: At one month postpartum, 22.6% of mothers were classified as having postpartum depression. Infants of depressed mothers were more frequently classified as difficult temperament infants. They showed lower scores on the amenability, rhythmicity and persistency and higher scores on activity in temperament. Also, infants of depressed mothers reported more infant health problems at one months. Maternal depression showed significant negative correlations with family functioning, social support and marital satisfaction. Conclusion: Study findings show that postpartum maternal depression is associated with infants' temperament and health, and thus screening and early interventions for postpartum depression would promote the health of both the mother and infant.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the attachment to mothers and peers and the depression on the adolescent delinquency. The subjects were 516 eleventh grade students in the liberal and the commercial high schools in Busan. The subjects rated on questionnaires by themselves regarding the attachment to mothers and peers, the depression and the latent delinquency. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) Adolescents in the commercial high school had more delinquency rate than those in the liberal high school. And the male adolescent had more delinquency rate than the female one. 2) The attachment to mothers and the kind of high school attended significantly predicted the male adolescent's depression. The attachment to mothers and peers significantly predicted the depression of the female adolescent. The relative influence of the attachment to mothers on the prediction of male and female adolescent's depression was the strongest among all the varibles. 3) The kind of high school had a first direct effect on the male and female adolescent's delinquency rates and was the first contribution factor. The attachment to mothers had both direct and indirect negative effect for female and an indirect negative effect for male on the adolescent delinquency rate through depression. But the attachment to peers had a direct positive effect on both male and female adolescent's delinquency. Depression had a direct effect on male adolescent delinquency.
The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a Laughter Therapy Group Counseling Program on overcoming anxiety, depression, and improving the self-esteem of mothers. The State-Trait Anger Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Self-Esteem Scale were used as a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test respectively. The test results were analyzed using a t-test, a one-way analysis of variance. Twelve mothers suffering from anxiety and depression participated in eight sessions of the program, and were then compared with twelve mothers in the control group who did not receive the treatment. The treatment group showed statistically significant improvements in self-esteem, and reduced levels of anxiety and depression, in comparison to the control group. It was concluded that the program was effective in overcoming anxiety, depression, and improving self-esteem in mothers.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was investigated that correlation between The Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI3-6) and Mother's Stress Response Inventory(SRI) and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI). Methods : We investigated 48 cases of 3-6 year old infants. Mothers of infants answered that questionnaire about temperament, character of infants and stress, depression of themselves. JTCI3-6 and SRI, BDI were used to get to know that answers. Results : Infants of mothers with high stress levels were lower than infants of mothers with low stress levels in cooperativeness. Infants of mothers with high depression levels were lower than infants of mothers with low depression levels in cooperativeness. Stress of mothers was negative correlated with cooperativeness in temperament of infants. Depression of mothers was negative correlated with cooperativeness in character of infants. Conclusions : Stress and depression of mothers were negative correlated with cooperativeness in character of infants.
Objectives: Young mothers are vulnerable to postpartum depression due to role transition-related stress. Understanding the causes underlying these stressors is essential for developing effective interventions. Methods: This study analyzed the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research data. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to assess postpartum depression symptoms in mothers aged 15-24 years with infants aged 0-6 months. In 1285 subjects, the risk factors for postpartum depression were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression. Results: The overall prevalence of depression in the 6 months postpartum was 4.0%, with a higher prevalence in urban areas (5.7%) than in rural areas (2.9%). Urban and rural young mothers showed distinct postpartum depression risk factors. In urban areas, living without a husband (odds ratio [OR], 3.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24 to 11.76), experiencing preterm birth (OR, 4.67; 95% CI, 1.50 to 14.50), having pregnancy complications (OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.20 to 7.66), and having postpartum complications (OR, 5.23; 95% CI, 1.98 to 13.80) were associated with a higher risk of postpartum depression. In rural areas, postpartum depression was significantly associated with a smaller household size (OR, 3.22; 95% CI, 1.00 to 10.38), unwanted pregnancy (OR, 4.40; 95% CI, 1.15 to 16.86), and pregnancy complications (OR, 3.41; 95% CI, 1.31 to 8.88). Conclusions: In both urban and rural contexts, postpartum depression relates to the availability of others to accompany young mothers throughout the postpartum period and offer support with reproductive issues. Support from the family and the healthcare system is essential to young mothers' mental health. The healthcare system needs to involve families to support young mothers' mental health from pregnancy until the postpartum period.
This study examined a causal relation between employment and depression among low-income young mothers who participated in New Chance Demonstration Study(NC). Using baseline and first follow-up interview data from NC study, this study selected 756 young mothers who were at risk of depression and unemployed at baseline. About 18% of them were employed and 45% of them were no longer at risk of depression at the first follow-up interview. The young mothers grade level and their race/ethnicity were significantly related to the number of weeks employed between the two time points and employment at the 1st follow-up interview. It was also found that employment was negatively associated with depression at the 1st follow-up interview. These findings imply that employment can ameliorate depressive symptoms of low-income young mothers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auricular acupressure on postpartum depression and fatigue among early postpartum mothers. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Forty early postpartum mothers were recruited from two postpartum care centers and randomly assigned to experimental group (n=20) and control group (n=20). The experimental group received the nursing intervention of auricular acupressure. Results: There were significant differences in postpartum depression and fatigue between the two groups. The participants in the experimental group showed significantly decreased scores of postpartum depression (z=-2.51, p=.012) and fatigue (t=5.36, p<.001). Conclusion: The nursing intervention programs using the auricular acupressure is effective in reducing depression and fatigue of early postpartum mothers. The findings will be useful for the health promotion among early postpartum mothers.
