Vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) of monoclinic phase exhibits Metal Insulator Phase Transition (MIPT) phenomenon involving a sharp change in electrical and optical properties at $68^{\circ}C$. Solution-based process is applied to form uniform $VO_2$ coating layer on ceramic tiles. This can selectively block the near-infrared light to possibly reduce the energy loss and prevent dew condensation caused by the temperature difference. Heat treatment conditions including temperature and dwell time were examined to obtain a monoclinic $VO_2$ single phase. Both rutile and monoclinic $VO_2$ phases were observed from in the tiles post-annealed below $700^{\circ}C$. Desired monoclinic $VO_2$ single phase was grown in the tiles heat treated at $750^{\circ}C$. Nano facets of irregular size were observed in the monoclinic $VO_2$ phase involving the phase-transition. Grain growth of monoclinic $VO_2$ phase was observed as a function of dwell time at $750^{\circ}C$.
The electronic structures of Gd$_{5}$Si$_2$Ge$_2$ compound, which has a giant magnetocaloric effect, in the monoclinic and orthorhombic phases were calculated using the tight-binding linear-muffin-tin-orbital method within the atomic-sphere approximation. The calculated total energies of the monoclinic and orthorhombic structures in the paramagnetic phase confirm that the orthorhombic structure is more stable than monoclinic structure. The density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level of the orthorhombic phase is higher than that of the monoclinic phase in the paramagnetic phase, fulfilling the Stoner criterion. The calculated charge density verified the breaking of Ge(Si)-Ge(Si) bonding in the basal plane upon the orthorhombic-monoclinic phase transition. The DOS curve fairly well reproduces the photoemission spectrum.m.

The effects of the purity and monoclinic phase of feedstock powder on the thermal durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBC) were investigated through cyclic thermal exposure. Bond and top coats were deposited by high velocity oxygen fuel method using Ni-Co based feedstock powder and air plasma spray method using three kinds of yttria-stabilized zirconia with different purity and monoclinic phase content, respectively. Furnace cyclic thermal fatigue test was performed to investigate the thermal fatigue behavior and thermal durability of TBCs. TBCs with high purity powder showed better sintering resistance and less thickness in the thermally grown oxide layer. The thermal durability was found to strongly depend on the content of monoclinic phase and the porosity in the top coat; the best thermal fatigue behavior and thermal durability were in the TBC prepared with high purity powder without monoclinic phase.

Bismuth vanadate($BiVO_4$) with monoclinic phase as photocatalyst under visible light is synthesized by precipitation reaction in hot water. Properties such as crystal phase, particle morphology and visual light absorbance as well as the effects of thermal treatment for $BiVO_4$ powders are investigated. $BiVO_4$ powders with both single monoclinic phase and 0.2 ${\mu}m$ in particle size are synthesized when precipitate is stirred in water for 5 h at 95$^{\circ}C$. Well-developed monoclinic phase and light absorption property under 535 nm are observed as a result of thermal treatment for 1 h at 300$^{\circ}C$ after precipitation reaction in water for 5 h at 95$^{\circ}C$. Degradation of monoclinic crystal is found in firing above 350$^{\circ}C$, and particle growth is occurred in firing above 550$^{\circ}C$.

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) is an attractive material for thermal barrier coating. Zirconia exists in three crystallographic phases: cubic, tetragonal and monoclinic. Especially, the phase transformation of tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase accompanies significant volume expansion, so this transition generally results in cracking and contributes to the failure of the TBC system. Both the plasma sprayed ZrO$_2$-8Y$_2$O$_3$ (YSZ) coat and the ZrO$_2$,-25CeO$_2$,-2.5Y$_2$O$_3$ (CYSZ) coat are isothermally heat -treated at 130$0^{\circ}C$ and 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 100hr and cooled at different cooling rates. The monoclinic phase is not discovered in all the CYSZ annealed at 130$0^{\circ}C$ and 150$0^{\circ}C$. In the 150$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treated specimens, the YSZ contains some monoclinic phase while none exists in the 130$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treated YSZ coat. For the YSZ, the different phase transformation behaviors at the two temperatures are due to the stabilizer concentration of high temperature phases and grain growth. For the YSZ with 150$0^{\circ}C$-100hr annealing, the amount of monoclinic phase increased with the slower cooling rate. The extra oxygen vacancy, thermal stress, and c to t'phase transformation might suppress the t to m martensitic phase transformation.

The effects of the additions of transition metal oxides on ZrO$_2$ - Y$_2$O$_3$ (Y$_2$O$_3$ - containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals : Y-TZP) system has been studied by investigating fracture toughness and phase stability of the sintered specimens. In the specimens sintered at 1450$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in air the phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic was observed. The ratios of monoclinic phase to tetragonal phase were changed with the additions of CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$, respectively, from 0.00 to 8.00wt%. The fracture toughness was increased with increasing the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio and was maximum at the ratio of about 18%. However, the hardness was decreased with increasing the ratio. The additions of CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ together into Y-TZP resulted in more complex behaviors of fracture toughness and hardness. The specimen with the additions of 1.5wt% Fe$_2$O$_3$, 3.0wt% Al$_2$O$_3$ and 1.5wt% CoO showed the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio of 18% and the highest toughness of 10.8 MPa.m$\^$$\frac{1}{2}$/ and Vickers hardness of 1201kgf/mm$^2$.

The effect of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ phase on the mechanical behavior in 7 mole% calcia partially stabilized zirconia has been studied. The $ZrO_2$ powder containg 7 mole% CaO prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method calcined at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was nearly 100% tetragonal but as the calcining temperature increased certain amount of monoclinic phase appeared. The sintered specimen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was aged at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 0, 24, 48, 72 hours. X-ray diffraction data showed that in the aged specimen monoclinic tetragonal and cubic phase coexisted. The Kc value of aged specimen for 48 hr was about 4.5MN/m3/2 much greater than unaged sample. But aged for 72 hr the KiC value was decreased. The increasing of toughness in PSZ is based on the Stress-Induced Phase Transformation that is metastable tetra-gonal $ZrO_2$ changes t stable monoclinic phase within the stress field of crack and the mechanical fracture energy absorption is occured But in this case due to certain amount of tetragonal phase transformed to monoclinic phase during cooling the microcrack effect by transformation also considered. Trerefore both Stress-Induced Phase Transformation and inclusion induced microcracking effect contrbute to the increase of fracture toughness of 7 mole% CaO-$ZrO_2$ containing monoclinic and tetragnola phase simulataneously.
PURPOSE. To investigate the effect of sintering programs and surface treatments on surface properties, phase transformation and flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia specimens were sintered using three distinct sintering programs [classic (C), speed (S), and superspeed (SS)] (n = 56, each). One sample from each group underwent scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grain size analysis following sintering. Remaining samples were divided into five subgroups (n = 11) based on the surface treatments: control (CL), polish (P), glaze (G), grind + polish (GP), and grind + glaze (GG). One sample from each subgroup underwent SEM analysis. Remaining samples were thermally aged. Monoclinic phase volume, surface roughness, and three-point flexural strength were measured. Monoclinic phase volume and surface roughness were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. Flexural strength was analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis. The relationships among the groups were analyzed using Spearman's correlation analysis. RESULTS. Sintering program, surface treatment, and sintering × surface treatment (P ≤ .010) affected the monoclinic phase volume, whereas the type of surface treatment and sintering × surface treatment affected the surface roughness (P < .001). Type of sintering program or surface treatment did not affect the flexural strength. Weibull analysis revealed no significant differences between the m and σo values. Monoclinic phase volume was positively correlated with surface roughness in the SGG and SSP groups. CONCLUSION. After sintering monolithic zirconia in each of the three sintering programs, each of the surface treatments can be used. However, for surface quality and aging resistance, G or GG can be recommended as a surface finishing method.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Recently Yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) has been introduced due to superior flexural strength and fracture toughness compared to other dental ceramic systems. Although zirconia has outstanding mechanical properties, the phenomenon of decrease in the life-time of zirconia resulted from degradation in flexural strength after low temperature aging has been reported. PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to investigate degradation of flexural strength of Y-TZP ceramics after various low temperature aging treatments and to evaluate the phase stability and micro-structural change after aging by using X-ray diffraction analysis and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). MATERIAL AND METHODS. Y-TZP blocks of Vita In-Ceram YZ (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad $S\ddot{a}ckingen$, Germany) were prepared in 40 mm (length) $\times$ 4 mm (width) $\times$ 3 mm (height) samples. Specimens were artificially aged in distilled water by heat-treatment at a temperature of 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, and $225^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, in order to induce the phase transformation at the surface. To measure the mechanical property, the specimens were subjected to a four-point bending test using a universal testing machine (Instron model 3365; Instron, Canton, Mass, USA). In addition, X-ray diffraction analysis (DMAX 2500; Rigaku, Tokyo, Japan) and SEM (Hitachi s4700; Jeol Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) were performed to estimate the phase transformation. The statistical analysis was done using SAS 9.1.3 (SAS institute, USA). The flexural strength data of the experimental groups were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and to detect statistically significant differences ($\alpha$= .05). RESULTS. The mean flexural strength of sintered Vita In-Ceram YZ without autoclaving was 798 MPa. When applied aging temperature at below $125^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, the flexural strength of Vita In-Ceram YZ increased up to 1,161 MPa. However, at above $150^{\circ}C$, the flexural strength started to decrease. Although low temperature aging caused the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation related to temperature, the minimum flexural strength was above 700 MPa. CONCLUSION. The monoclinic phase started to appear after aging treatment above $100^{\circ}C$. With the higher aging temperature, the fraction of monoclinic phase increased. The ratio of monoclinic/tetragonal + monoclinic phase reached a plateau value, circa 75% above $175^{\circ}C$. The point of monoclinic concentration at which the flexural strength begins to decrease was between 12% and 54%.
Low temperature degradation behavior in yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramics was microscopically observed from the phase contrast between monoclinic surface and tetragonal matrix. The degradation behavior was dependent on the surface treatment of sintered Y-TZP, even if the sintering history is same. In the mirror polished specimen, the monoclinic layer appeared in a uniform thickness from the surface. On the contrary, for the specimen with coarse scratch, the thickness of degraded surface was more than double especially from the coarse scratch. Since the scratch results in local deformation, the residual stress should be induced around the scratch. With the transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic, the volume expansion exerts a stress on a neighboring grains and promotes a successive phase transformation. Such a autocatalytic effect can be triggered from the part of coarse scratch.
