In this paper, we try to verify a normative module based house design procedure consisted of several sequential steps. The first step is to suggest formalization of designing so that we could clarify each phase and operation we are adopting in our design process. The second step is the clearing up the conceptual schema of traditional skills that we adopt and utilize from traditional Hanok framing techniques. The third step is to formulate adequate modular kits for the assembly of house design solutions for the schematic, conceptual and preliminary phases of designing. The fourth step is to implementing our ideas and methods to a proper computational platform such as Unity3D. The final step is to verify our symbolic descriptions of design formalization with the output of our experiments so that we have better understanding of design reasoning characteristics such as in house design.

Protocol testing techniques are expanded from the traditional simple function- testing based on the OSI model, to sophisticated performance testing, conformance testing and interoperability testing. In addition, both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint protocols are to be covered. This paper presents a new multiple-purpose protocol test system where the common platform includes the test sequence generation and test result analysis, and the modular test execution part is selectively adjusted according to the test purposes and protocols under test. This paper describes test system for network routing protocol and test system for transport protocol, designed upon the ideas of the multiple-purpose protocol test system.

In order to manage the wet end chemistry on paper machines, our goal is to control sub-processes through which we can influence the entire wet end operations with maximum effect. The most important sub-processes are: consistency, ash, and chemistry. The management of these three main groups is based on on-line maesurements and automatic control. This paper presents a new wet end management platform, a new analyzer. This new analyzer utilizes a modular structure and modem software. It is part of a new paper machine concept. The controls of this concept are feedback and feedforward solutions that control retention, consistencies, ash, and charge, resulting in a more stable wet end (30...80%), more uniform paper, and better rnnability.
This paper presents an advanced architecture for a traffic generator capable of producing ATM traffic streams according to fully general semi-Markovian stochastic models. The architecture employs a basic traffic generator platform and enhances it by adding facilities for 'driving' the cell generation process through high-level specifications. Several kinds of optimization are employed for enhancing the software's speed to match the hardware's potential and for ensuring that traffic streams corresponding to models with a wide range of parameters can be generated efficiently and reliably. The proposed traffic generation procedure is highly modular. Thus, although this paper deals with ATM traffic, the main elements of the architecture can be used equally well for generating traffic loads on other networking technologies, IP-based networks being a notable example.

The continuing enlargement, deepening integration of EU and penetration of extra-EU enterprise into EU market are forming a new geographical restructure of the production system. In this paper, I analyse the changing geography of the EU automotive production system. The globalization and regionalisation of production activity intensify a competition among the enterprise. The European automotive production system changes to a platform system and a modular system for a diminution of productive costs, a development of various products and a frequent innovation of products. The European automotive enterprise is restructuring geographically the production functions and products in order to promote efficiency on a new production system, enlarged production space and intensified economic integration. The European automotive industry tends to a spatial specialization and agglomeration according to the locational factors of production functions and products and the locational condition of regions. This intensifies the geographical hierarchic structure of production activity between the core and the periphery.
As personal robots coexist with a person with a role to help a person, while adapting various human life and environment, the personal robots have to accommodate frequently-changing or different-from-home-to-home environment. In addition, personal robots may have many kinds of different Kinematic configurations depending on the capabilities. Some may have a mobile base and others may have arms and a head. The motivation of this study arises from this not-well-defined home environment and varying Kinematic configuration. So the goal of this study is to develop a general control architecture for personal robots. There exist three major architectures; deliberative, reactive and hybrid. We found that these are applicable only for the defined environment with a fixed Kinematic configuration. Neither could accommodate the above two requirements. For the general solution, we propose a Supervised Hybrid Architecture (SHA), in which we use double layers of deliberative and reactive controls, distributed control with a modular design of Kinematic configurations, and real-time Linux OS. Deliberative and reactive actions interact through a corresponding arbitrator. These arbitrators help a robot to choose an appropriate architecture depending on the current situation to successfully perform a given task. The distributed control modules communicate through IEEE 1394 for the easy expandability. With a personal robot platform with a mobile base, two arms, a head and a pan-tilt stereo eye system, we tested the developed SHA for static as well as dynamic environments. For this application, we developed decision-making rules for selecting appropriate control methods for several situations of navigation task. Examples are shown to show the effectiveness.

This study aims to investigate the impact of wide use of digital technology, in particular, the Internet, on innovation process and corporate strategy in electronics industry. The introduction of digital technology has changed innovation process, business model and organizational structure of the electronics companies. With the introduction of digital technology, the entire value chain of electronics industry from procurement, sales, and marketing to R&D and manufacturing has been restructured. E-commerce has been a major agenda for e-business. Recently, collaboration among electronics companies through e-marketplace has emerged as an important issue. A web-based e-commerce standard, so called RosettaNet, has been developed for facilitating e-transactions of electronics firms. The development of digital technology has dramatically increased the processing speed and sophisticated the virtual reality technology. As simulation becomes easier and more effective, the uncertainty and risk involved in R&D has decreased significantly. Another positive impact is closer cooperation between R&D and manufacturing functions. Taking advantage of automated and flexible production technology, has a new type of firm, so called, EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) emerged, whose strategic focus is on manufacturing only. The EMS can be seen as a kind of innovative organization, that is, a modular organization for production function. Digital technology has made convergence of computer and communication possible at early years but right now the convergence has been accelerated in extensive areas of communication, broadcasting, information appliances, software, contents, and services. Firms' effort for an innovative product and service has been intensified and the competition for a new standard product and service has become severe in electronics industry. Business activities are always realized in a specific organizational context. Accordingly building up innovation-friendly organization has emerged as a critical concern. Due to the striking decrease of transaction cost, a network type of organization has proliferated, and a business function turns into a modular organization. As a whole, digital technology has pushed electronics firms into developing their own business model, which takes consideration of standardization of business platform and their core competency.
Recently, avionics has been migrating from a federated architecture to an integrated modular architecture based on a multi-core to reduce the number of systems, weight, power consumption, and platform redundancy. The volume of data which must bo provided to the pilot through the display device has increased, because an integrated single device performs multiple functions. For this reason, the volume of data processed by the graphic processor within a fixed operation period has increased. In this paper, we provide a multi-core-based rendering engine in to perform more graphics processing within a fixed operation period. We assume the proposed method uses a multi-core-based partitioning operating system using the AMP (Asymmetric Multi-Processing) architecture.

In this study, we develop a simulation model for Supply Chain Management (SCM) of modular construction based steel bridge. To this end, first, Factory Production/Site Construction system data for the steel bridge construction were collected, and supply chain, entities, resources, processes were defined based on the collected data. After that, a steel bridge supply chain simulation model was developed by creating data, flowchart, and animation modules using Arena software. Finally, verification and validation of the model were performed by using animation check, extreme condition check, average value test, Little' s law test, and actual case value test. As a result, the developed simulation model appropriately expressed the processes and characteristics of the steel bridge supply chain without any logical errors, and provided accurate performance evaluation values for the target system. In the future, we expect that the model will faithfully play a role as a performance evaluation platform in developing management techniques for optimally operating the steel bridge supply chain.
This study suggested a way to compose a flexible environment capable of meeting the needs of various users from the aged people to challenged people, and ordinary people by applying the concept of universal design. The purpose of this study was to develop a more convenient environment by deriving the best size and color for each subject and constructing a detailed design platform for each module. For this, the concept of universal design as well as the current bathroom designs were examined and various users were analyzed prior to developing the design. A virtual environment was prepared based on the results and its usability was evaluated in two phases with various users including the aged people, challenged people, and ordinary people. As a result, it received quite a favorable evaluation from users, over 90 out of 100 in average, which can be regarded as a proof that it is differentiated from existing bathrooms. This study may lead to the change in the paradigm of bathroom in residential space, development of safer and comfortable domestic environment, and the enhancement of the quality of healthy life through the development of a design platform for each module that provides new experiences to various users. It is hoped that these modular systems are continuously studied not only for bathrooms but also for various residential spaces where people can stay.
