The exoticism shown in the western fashion are influenced by such elements as curiosity and escapism. And diverse and plural exotic elements added a fantastic element to the exoticism. 2. • Street furniture such as benches, streetlamps, and shades which are easily accessible in cities has contributed to the promotion of active, lively environment for people living in cities. Furthermore, they make the characteristics of specific regions and cities, and are valued as a communication interface to restore the relationships between people and cities. The street furniture design with inherent publicness is an essential element for leisurely life and refined image of modern people who have experienced severance and mental poverty in uniform, vertical modern city space with the development of advanced science and technology. The purpose of this study is to analyze the new design approaches to street furniture which plays an important role in the determination of the images of modern city environment and to examine the characteristics and trends of such designs. First, in accordance with the flow of studies from publicness and public space to street furniture, the concept and meaning of publicness which is the basic element of public space were identified through theoretical examination, and the characteristics and roles of modern public space were analyzed through literature review, data review, and international cases. Based on the results of this theoretical analysis, the concept and meaning elements, function elements, and design elements of the street furniture which was planned in accordance with the goal and functions of public space were identified. For the meaning elements of street furniture design, fun, health, culture, sustainability, and vitalization were identified. For the function elements of street furniture design, convenience, safety, and delivery were identified. As the characteristics of modern street furniture design, convergent, green, digilog, functional, and universal designs were analyzed. This study is meaningful in that it recognized the roles of street furniture in modern public space as a concrete, practical environmental design element and estimated the development directions of street furniture design in public space.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the modern image by clothing design elements. This research was done by survey method with 25 kinds of modern image photos selected in fashion magazines. The data was analyzed by Reliability Analysis, Factor Analysis, MANOVA, One-Way ANOVA, Duncan's test and MDS. The results of this study are as follows: 1. modern image was classified by 5 factors. Those were sexy-modern, elegant-modern, natural-modern, mannish-modern and minimal-modern images. 2. Sexy-modern image was well-expressed by chromatic and chromatic color coordinations. Elegant-modern image was well-expressed by fitted silhouette, fit and achromatic and chromatic color coordinations. Natural-modern image was well-expressed by A silhouette, loose apparel-fit, chromatic and chromatic coordinations and soft texture. Mannish-modern image was well-expressed by H silhouette, loose apparel-fit, chromatic and chromatic color coordinations and hard texture. Minimal-modern image was well-expressed by H silhouette, tight or loose apparel-fit and soft texture. 3. modern image was positioned into mostly hard or masculine on image scale.

  • In this study, we selected 12 typical traditional restaurants in Korea and China and analyzed their application of traditional design approach. Through this analysis, we tried to explore similarities and differences of Korean restaurants and Chinese restaurants in order to determine the preferable way to express their own traditional design. We categorized traditional design approach as cultural elements, designing method, coloring and materials. The results are as follows: First, following a tradition and interpreting a tradition are considered as compelling design methods to express traditional culture. However, when combining a traditional and a modern design approach, it is important to either strongly emphasize traditional design elements or use small number of traditional design elements as focal points in modern design restaurants. Second, when designing a traditional restaurant using modern design elements with traditional focal points, it is more desirable to follow and/or to interpret a traditional elements, rather than experimenting an excessively unconventional design. Moreover, the design elements of exterior of a restaurant shows the identity of the restaurant. Therefore, using traditional elements in the exterior helps recognizing the traditional characteristics and culture. On the other hands, for the interior of the restaurant, it is better to use modern design method and materials for the practical reasons, such as construction cost reduction and ease of construction. We also discovered that it is more effective to use traditional elements to the pattern and color. The results of this study will set a foundation for further research of developing a design guideline for traditional restaurants.

  • This study examines how various elements characteristic of the traditional Japanese architecture are applied to contemporary architectural designs in japan. The issue of how to incorporate cultural tradition into architectural design has become one of central questions cast on modern architects. In this sense, the Japanese contemporary architecture has often been touted as infusing Japanese traditional elements into modern artifacts both functionally and aesthetically. That is, while Japanese architecture encompasses the essentials of Western modern techniques and styles, it obviously embodies Japanese tradition. Through the examination of various contemporary buildings in Japan, this study specifically explores how the vernacular forms and elements unique to Japan are reinterpreted and reinvigorated in contemporary architectural designs.

  • The creative energy of the Korean women who pursued spiritual artistic practices under the limited situation of male-dominated confucian society in the Chosun Dynasty(AD 1392 - AD 1910) constituted the background for the development of Gubang Craft. Gubang Craft represented their artistic abilities, moral and family values, and the pursuit of self-esteem. Especially embroidery successfully showed four main elements of Gubang Craft such as embellishment, diversity, femininity, and craftsmanship. This paper is designed to explore how the traditional elements of embroidery works are restored and have influence on the modern Korean fiber art.

  • Many other human species appeared in evolution in the last 6 million years that have not been able to survive to modern times and are broadly known as archaic humans, as opposed to the extant modern humans. It has always been considered fascinating to compare the modern human genome with that of archaic humans to identify modern human-specific sequence variants and figure out those that made modern humans different from their predecessors or cousin species. Neanderthals are the latest humans to become extinct, and many factors made them the best representatives of archaic humans. Even though a number of comparisons have been made sporadically between Neanderthals and modern humans, mostly following a candidate gene approach, the major breakthrough took place with the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome. The initial genome-wide comparison, based on the first draft of the Neanderthal genome, has generated some interesting inferences regarding variations in functional elements that are not shared by the two species and the debated admixture question. However, there are certain other genetic elements that were not included or included at a smaller scale in those studies, and they should be compared comprehensively to better understand the molecular make-up of modern humans and their phenotypic characteristics. Besides briefly discussing the important outcomes of the comparative analyses made so far between modern humans and Neanderthals, we propose that future comparative studies may include retrotransposons, pseudogenes, and conserved non-coding regions, all of which might have played significant roles during the evolution of modern humans.
