  • The resonant planar transformer, which had power capacity of 300 W, input voltage of 220 V, output voltage of 15 V, and switching frequency of 500 kHz, was designed and manufactured by using the planar core with large effective area and the flat copper lead frames for miniaturization and high efficiency of the switching mode power supply (SMPS). As well as, a resonant converter equipped with the above mentioned planar transformer was manufactured and electromagnetic characteristics were investigated. The numerical value of turns for 1st and 2nd winding were 12 and 2 respectively. The self inductance of 1st winding was 33.2 ${\mu}H$, very low leakage inductance of 1.27 ${\mu}H$, and the coupling factor of 0.98 were obtained at switching frequency of 300 kHz. The high efficiency of 88.21 % for the SMPS equipped with planar transformer was obtained at power capacity of 300 W.

  • High-power piezoelectric materials are being developed for applications such as actuators and ultrasonic motors. In this paper, ferroelectric property of iron-doped 0.57 (Sc$_{1}$2//Nb$_{1}$2/)O$_3$-0.43 PbTiO$_3$. which is the morphotropic phase boundary composition for the PSN-PT system, was investigated. The maximum dielectric constant ( $\varepsilon$$_{33}$/$\varepsilon$$_{0}$ = 2551) and the minimum dielectric loss(tan $\delta$ = 0.51 %) at room temperature were obtained at 01. wt% and 0.3 wt% of iron additions. With additions of the Fe$_2$O$_3$ the electromechanical coupling factor of radial mode k$_{p}$ and the piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ were slightly decreased, on the other hand the mechanical quality factor was increased significantly. The highest mechanical quality factor (Qm= 297) was obtained at 0.3 wt% Fe$_2$O$_3$, which is 4.4 times larger than that of pure 0.57 PSN-0.43PT ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and dielectic loss was observed between 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 35$0^{\circ}C$ .X> .X> .

  • Squeal noise is a typical brake noise that is annoying to both passengers and pedestrians. Its frequency range is fairly wide from 1 kHz to 18 kHz, which can be distressful to people. The brake squeal noise occurs due to various mechanisms, such as the mode coupling of the brake system, self-excited vibration, unstable wear, and others. In this study, several parameters involved in the generation of a squeal noise are investigated experimentally by using a brake noise dynamometer. The speed, caliper pressure, torque, and friction coefficient are measured as functions of time on the dynamometer. The contact pressure and temperature distributions of the disc and the pad are also measured by using a thermal imaging camera and a pressure mapping system. As a result of the simultaneous measurement of the friction coefficient and squeal amplitude as functions of the velocity, it is found that the onset of the squeal may be predicted from the ${\mu}-v$ curve. It is also found that a non-uniform contact pressure causes instability and, in turn, a squeal. Based on the analysis results, design modifications of the pad are suggested for improved noise characteristics.

  • Field line resonances (FLRs) observed in the magnetosphere often have the amplitude of a few nT, which indicates that dB/B roughly satisfies ~0.01. It is well known that the FLRs are excited by compressional waves via mode conversion, but there has been no apparent criterion on the maximum amplitude in the regime of linear approximations. Such limited range of amplitude should be understood by including nonlinear saturation of FLRs, which has not been examined until now. In this study, using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation code, we examine the evolution of nonlinear field line resonances (FLRs) in the cold plasmas. The MHD code used in this study allows a full nonlinear description and enables us to study the maximum amplitude of FLRs. When the disturbance is sufficiently small, it is shown that linear properties of MHD wave coupling are well reproduced. In order to examine a nonlinear excitation of FLRs, it is shown how these FLRs become saturated as the initial magnitude of disturbances is assumed to increase. Our results suggest that the maximum amplitude of FLRs become saturated at the level of the same order of dB/B as in observations. In addition, we discuss the role of both linear terms and nonlinear terms in the MHD wave equations.

  • The metallic nanoparticles (Pt, Au, Ag. Cu, etc.) supported on ceria-titania mixed oxide exhibit a high catalytic activity for the water gas shift reaction ($H_2O\;+\;CO\;{\leftrightarrow}\;H_2\;+\;CO_2$) and the CO oxidation ($O_2\;+\;2CO\;{\leftrightarrow}\;2CO_2$). It has been speculated that the high catalytic activity is related to the easy exchange of the oxidation states of ceria ($Ce^{3+}$ and $Ce^{4+}$) on titania, but very little is known about the ceria titanium interaction, the growth mode of metal on ceria titania complex, and the reaction mechanism. In this work, the growth of $CeO_x$ and Au/$CeO_x$ on rutile $TiO_2$(110) have been investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES), and DFT calculation. In the $CeO_x/TiO_2$(110) systems, the titania substrate imposes on the ceria nanoparticles non-typical coordination modes, favoring a $Ce^{3+}$ oxidation state and enhancing their chemical activity. The deposition of metal on a $CeO_x/TiO_2$(110) substrate generates much smaller nanoparticles with an extremely high activity. We proposed a mechanism that there is a strong coupling of the chemical properties of the admetal and the mixed-metal oxide: The adsorption and dissociation of water probably take place on the oxide, CO adsorbs on the admetal nanoparticles, and all subsequent reaction steps occur at the oxide-admetal interface.

  • According to the mechanical-electrical coupling characteristics and the electrical Impedance property of resistor-inductor-capacitor(RLC) series resonant circuit, the mechanical impedance analysis of a bimorph piezoceramic patch shunted with a series RLC resonant circuit is conducted. The displacement transfer function of a cantilever beam bonded with a piezoelectric shunt damping module is deduced in the case of single mode vibration of the beam. By the use of vibration damping theory of tuned mass damper system, the parameter optimization of piezoelectric shunt damping system is performed. The optimal resonant state of the shunting circuit can be obtained when the resister and conductor are optimally adjusted. Test results show that the vibration control effect as well improved with optimized piezoelectric shunt system.

  • In mobile phones of multimedia era, microspeakers of high quality sound are essential parts to generate human voice in speaker phone and MP3 song player. In this paper, two types of microspeakers, outer permanent magnet (PM) and combined PM type, are analyzed using electromagnetic, mechanical, acoustical and their coupling analysis. For performance comparison, voice coil diameter is chosen as a design parameter to change excitation position and magnet volume for both types. For combined PM type, sound pressure level (SPL) is improved due to increased PM volume compared to outer PM type. Also, with the decreased voice coil diameter for combined PM type, the 1st resonant mode of the diaphragm is more efficiently excited due to concentrative excitation, resulting in lower and broader frequency range. Therefore, it can be said that the combined PM type microspeakers are more advantageous for high performance microspeaker which are essential for multimedia era.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

  • In this paper, the dynamics of a 2-DOF not 1:1 resonant Hamiltonian system are studied. In the first part of the work, the behaviors of special periodic orbits called normal modes are examined by means of the harmonic balance method and their approximate stability ar analyzed by using the Synge's concept named stability in the kinematico-statical sense. Secondly, the global dynamics of the system for low and high energy are studied in terms of a perturbation analysis and Poincare' maps. In this part, one can see that the unstable normal mode generates chaotic motions resulting from the transverse intersections of the stable and unstable manifolds. Although there exist analytic methods for proving the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits, chaos, they cannot be applied in our case and thus, the Poincare' maps constructed by direct numerical integrations are utilized fot detecting chaotic motions. In the last part of the work, the existence of arbitrarily many periodic orbits of the system are proved by using a subharmonic Melnikov's method. We also study the possibility of the breakdown of invariant KAM tori only when h>h$_{0}$ (h$_{0}$:bifurcating energy) and investigate the generality of the destruction phenomena of the rational tori in the systems perturbed by stiffness and inertial coupling.
