  • Starches from different botanical sources differ in the ratio of amylose to amylopectin contents, molecular structures of amylose and amylopectin, granule morphology, and minor-component contents. These structural features result in different gelatinization, pasting, retrogradation properties, and enzyme digestibility of starch granules. In this review, compositions and molecular structures of starches and their effects on the physicochemical properties are summarized and discussed.

  • Random copolymers are widely used as materials since they afford a convenient possibility of adjusting properties through the compositions of the copolymers. In the case of semicrystalline polymers, the degree of crystallinity generally decreases as the content of the minor component increases, leading often to fully amorphous materials even at low concentrations of the comonomer. • Objectives: In order to investigate the relationship of Radix Trichosanthis components and the melanin synthesis, the author has analyzed the cell viability and tyrosinase activity, melanin content and morphologic changes in n-hexane, EtOAc, n-BuOH, and H2O fraction. Methods: At first, in order to determine the concentration of the Radix Trichosanthis component, the author investigated the viability of B16 melanoma cell. To measure the effects of Trichosanthes kirilowii extracts (n-BuOH, n-Hexane, EtOAc, H2O fractions) on the viability of A549 cells, A549 cells were treated with various concentrations (from 0.5 to $25{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$) of components of Trichosanthes kirilowii. After 24hrs, the cell viability was measured by MTT assay. The EtOAc components of Trichosanthes kirilowii decreased the viability of A549 cells in a dose-dependent manner. H2O and n-BuOH components had no cell toxicity till $25{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$, the n-hexane component showed minor cell toxicity at $25{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ and the EtOAc component cell toxicity was revealed at $5{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ concentration. Results: 1. The results of tyrosinase activity and the Radix Trichosanthis component; n-hexane and EtOAc components controlled it effectively; the n-BuOH components were less effective. 2. The results of melanin content analysis showed that the n-hexane and EtOAc components effectively inhibited, the n-BuOH fraction inhibited less, and H2O component didn't inhibit the terminal melanin formation. 3. In the n-BuOH and H2O component there were no changes, but in the n-hexane component the melanin content was effectively inhibited. 4. In the EtOAc fraction, although the melanin content was inhibited, the cell count was evidently suppressed, Of all of the Radix Trichosanthis components, the n-Hexane and EtOAc fractions inhibited the melanin synthesis best, but owing to its toxicity, the EtOAc components inhibited the cell count. Conclusion: The above results demonstrated that Radix Trichosanthis n-hexane fraction efficiently inhibited the tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis.

  • Shaped single crystals of Bi : $Y_3Ga_5O_{12}$(Bi = 0.041, 0.047 and 0.061 mol%) were grown by the micro-pulling-down method. Optical absorption spectra show an absorption band at 288 nm ascribed to the lowest energy $6s^2$ \longrightarrow 6s6p transition of $Bi^{3+}$ , while luminescence spectra demonstrate the band at 314 nm ascribed to the reverse radiative transition of the excited $Bi^{3+}$ centres. At room temperature, dominant decay time component was found to be about 440 ns with a minor slower component 580 ns.

  • A dynamic density functional theory is presented for the observation of the phase revolutions of a solution-casting film of di- and tri-block copolymers under solvent evaporation conditions. With the evaporation of the solvent, the inverted phases, the minor part of the component becomes the continuous phase at the higher solvent evaporation rate, as observed in this experiment. Further simulation revealed that these inverted phases are converted into the normal phase and the major part of the component becomes the continuous phase, implying that the inverted phases observed in this experiment are unstable.

  • The inorganic compositions of traditional lye, and lyes prepared from the stalks of five different agricultural products: beans, wheat, barley, buckwheat and red peppers, were analyzed. Traditional lye was composed mainly of a weak alkaline salt, potassium carbonate as the major component and neutral salts, potassium chloride and potassium sulfate as minor components. The ash and lye contents of buckwheat have significantly higher then those of the rest agricultgural products. Bean and red pepper stalks lyes were composed mainly of potassium carbonate, similar to the composition of traditional lye, but also contained potassium chloride or sulfate. In contrast, postassium chloride was the major component of wheat and barley stalk lye.

  • Total lipids extracted from the powdered seeds of Carum roxburghianum were fractionated into hydrocarbons (0.30%), wax esters (0.30%), sterol esters (1.35%), triacylglycerols (72.41%), free fatty acids (6.06%), 1,3-diacylglycerols (4.60%), 1,2- diacylglycerols (0.64%), glycolipids (5.10%), sterols (1.20%), 2-monoacylgylcerols (3.18%), 1-monoacylglycerols (1.46%), phosphatidylethanolamines (1.08%) phosphatidylcholines (0.40%), lysophosphatidylethanolamines (1.48%) and phosphatidylinositols (0.44%) with the help of TLC. The fatty acid composition of all the lipid fractions was determined after converting them into their methyl esters with $BF_3-methanol$ reagent and then analyzing them by GC. Oleic acid was found as a major component in all the lipid classes, whereas palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids were present in lesser quantities. Arachidic acid was identified as a minor component in only seven out of twelve lipid classes.

  • A new binder system and debinding process for low carbon residue in the injection molding of Nd(Fe, Co)B powder are investigated. In the injection molding of magnetic materials, it is demanded to reduce carbon residue which deteriorates their magnetic properties. The binder system developed is composed of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and polypropylene (PP). PEG was selected as a major binder is component to be extracted in a molecular state by solvent extraction in ethanol, which step would leave no residue. PP was selected as a minor binder component to be subsequently removed by thermolysis which step would leave carbon residue. The behaviors of solvent extraction with the variations of PEG molecular weight, temperature, and time were examined. The dependency of residual carbon content on thermolysis atmosphere was also studied. Opened pore channels introduced in a green body by the solvent extraction and microstructures of the sintered magnets were observed using SEM.

  • To compare the composition of volatile flavor components of two different types of rice, the volatile flavor concentrates isolated from brown rices Hyangnambyeo(aromatic cultivar) and Dongjinbyeo (normal cultivar) were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. A total of components, including 16 hydrocarbons, 16 aldehydes and ketones, 15 alcohols, 4 acids, and 10 miscellaneous components were identified positively or tentat ively. Among them, n pentanol was the most abundant component in both samples and Hyangnambyeo contained more aldehydes and alcohols than Dongjinbyeo. 2 Acetyl 1 pyrroline which is chiefly responsible for the character istic odor of aromatic type rice was high in Hyangnambyeo compare to Dongjinbyeo, but these were detected as minor component.

  • In the previous report, we have demonstrated that ginsenoside Rc, one of major ginsenosides, is a major component for the restoration for normal growth of worms in cholesterol-deprived medium. In the present study, we further investigated the roles of minor ginsenosides, such as ginsenoside $Rh_1$ and $Rh_2$, ginsenoside metabolites such as compound K (CK), protopanaxadiol (PPD), and protopanaxatriol (PPT) and ginsenoside epimers such as 20(R)- and 20(S)-ginsenoside $Rg_3$ in cholesterol-deprived medium. We found that ginsenoside $Rh_1$ almost restored normal growth of worms in cholesterol-deprived medium in F1 generation. However, supplement of ginsenoside $Rh_2$ caused a suppression of worm growths in cholesterol-deprived medium. In addition, CK and PPD also slightly restored normal growth of worms in cholesterol-deprived medium but PPT not. In experiments using ginsenoside epimers, supplement of 20(S)- but not 20(R)-ginsenoside $Rg_3$ in cholesterol-deprived medium also almost restored worm growth. These results indicate that the absence or presence of carbohydrate component at backbone of ginsenoside, the number of carbohydrate attached at carbon-3, and the position of hydroxyl group at carbon-20 of ginsenoside might plays important roles in restoration of worm growth in cholesterol-deprived medium.
