An elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis for an axially crown profiled cylindrical roller is carried out using a finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method. Variations of the minimum film thickness with dimensionless parameters show considerably different from those of infinite solutions.

The rate of wear of cam followers in a valve train system is mainly a function of contact stress between the cam and the follower, sliding velocity and hydrodynamic film thickness between the two mating surfaces. The wear or surface fatigue can be reduced by maximizing the elastohydrodynamic film thickness. In this paper, an attempt has been made to estimate the optimal specific film thickness of cam-follower system quantitatively. A general TES polynomial function with real values of exponents is developed and genetic algorithm (GA) is used as optimization techniques for maximizing the minimum specific film thickness. The optimization programs enumerate values of the exponents for synthesis of cam displacement curves. The results show that the minimum film thickness can be increased considerably, e.g. approximately 7% in this paper.

The mask parameters of a coded aperture are critical design features when optimizing the performance of a gamma-ray camera. In this paper, experiments and Monte Carlo simulations were performed to derive the minimum detectable activity (MDA) when one seeks a real-time imaging capability. First, the impact of the thickness of the modified uniformly redundant array (MURA) mask on the image quality is quantified, and the imaging of point, line, and surface radiation sources is demonstrated using both cross-correlation (CC) and maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) methods. Second, the minimum detectable activity is also derived for real-time imaging by altering the factors used in the image quality assessment, consisting of the peak-to-noise ratio (PSNR), the normalized mean square error (NMSE), the spatial resolution (full width at half maximum; FWHM), and the structural similarity (SSIM), all evaluated as a function of energy and mask thickness. Sufficiently sharp images were reconstructed when the mask thickness was approximately 2 cm for a source energy between 30 keV and 1.5 MeV and the minimum detectable activity for real-time imaging was 23.7 MBq at 1 m distance for a 1 s collection time.
To study the lubrication performance of tilting-pad thrust bearing (TPTBs) during start-up in nuclear pump, a hydrodynamic lubrication model of TPTBs was established based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) technique. Further, a mesh motion algorithm for the transient calculation of thrust bearings was developed based on the user defined function (UDF). The result demonstrated that minimum film thickness increases first and then decreases with the rotational speed under start-up condition. The influence of pad tilt on minimum film thickness is greater than that of collar movement at low speed, and the establishment of dynamic pressure mainly depends on pad tilt and minimum film thickness increases. As the increase of rotational speed, the influence of pad tilt was abated, where the influence of the moving of the collar dominated gradually, and minimum film thickness decreases. For TPTBs, the circumferential angle of the pad is always greater than the radial angle. When the rotational speed is constant, the change rate of radial angle is greater than that of circumferential angle with the increase of loading forces. This study can provide reference for improving bearing wear resistance.

Flat plate slab systems are more economical rather than reinforced concrete frame systems because flat plate slab system reduces story height. Furthermore flat plate systems are more popularly needed in construction practice due to flexibility of plan. Korean Concrete Provisions 2003 provide the minimum thickness of the slab that satisfies serviceability requirement to the static displacement. However, floor thickness in residence buildings may not satisfy the floor vibration criteria although the thickness satisfies the serviceability requirements in current design provisions. This study estimates the dynamic properties of floor vibration for existing flat plate slabs, and proposes the slab thickness satisfying the floor vibration criteria. The dynamic response analysis using finite element method and reliability analysis are carried out for this Purpose.
Thickness is a commonly used parameter in product design and manufacture. Its intuitive definition as the smallest dimension of a cross-section or the minimum distance between two opposite surfaces is ambiguous for intricate solids, and there is very little reported work in automatic computation of thickness. We present three generic definitions of thickness: interior thickness of points inside an object, exterior thickness for points on the object surface, and radiographic thickness along a view direction. Methods for computing and displaying the respective thickness values are also presented. The internal thickness distribution is obtained by peeling or successive skin removal, eventually revealing the object skeleton (similar to medial axis transformation). Another method involves radiographic scanning along a viewing direction, with minimum, maximum and total thickness options, displayed on the surface of the object. The algorithms have been implemented using an efficient voxel based representation that can handle up to one billion voxels (1000 per axis), coupled with a near-real time display scheme that uses a look-up table based on voxel neighborhood configurations. Three different types of intricate objects: industrial (press cylinder casting), sculpture (Ganesha idol), and medical (pelvic bone) were used for successfully testing the algorithms. The results are found to be useful for early evaluation of manufacturability and other lifecycle considerations.

The main subject of this paper is analyzing the patterns of maximum oil film pressure and the minimum oil film thickness under various pre-conditions of geometric shape as functions of bearing groove and proceeding oil hole in the connecting rod bearing. As the major analytical tool, elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis has been applied and two-intertwined results of maximum oil film pressure and minimum oil film thickness have been compared and analyzed using EXCITE program. From computed results, the optimal lubrication conditions as geometric shape of bearing groove and the proceeding oil hole have been investigated. This may be useful for the bearing designer as a firm reference.
The connecting rod bearing, which is subjected to periodical dynamic loading, is an impoRant component of the reciprocating engine. In the operation of this bearing, significant parameters are the oil film thickness and the film pressure. Peak film pressures of 20-30 MPa are not uncommon. So the elastic deformation of the bearing housing can have a significant effect on the bearing performance. In this study, a numerical analysis of connecting rod bearing is investigated. Elastic deformation of the bearing housing is considered in the analysis. Separate hydrodynamic and structural analysis are coupled through a direct iterative process. It is shown that as the result of the elastic deformation of the bearing housing, the eccentricity ratio is increased, and the minimum value of the minimum film thickness and the maximum value of the maximum film pressure are decreased. The variations of rotational speed and cylinder pressure affect the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure variations of the connecting rod bearing.
A numerical analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spinning has been carried out. A finite difference method with non-uniform grid systems and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problems. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spinning and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Pressure distributions, film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. Reduction of the minimum film thickness under spinning is remarkable whereas the central film thickness is relatively less. The spin motion have large effect on variations of the minimum film thickness with load parameter which are small in pure rolling/sliding cases. Therefore present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact EHL problems and further studies are required.

This paper describes the variation of lubricant's temperature effects on elastohydrodynamic lubrication. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to solve the simultaneous system of Reynolds and elasticity equations. To show effects of lubricant's temperature, average temperature across the oil film was calculated using the energy equation. Pressure distribution, film shape, and temperature distribution were obtained for fully flooded conjunctions, and various dimensionless speed parameters while load and material parameters were held constant. Minimum film thickness were obtained for various material properties while load and velocity were held constant. It is drawn that the thermal effects have a strong influence on a minimum film thickness under high rolling velocity and slip ratio.
