There have been controversies over whether explosion hazardous area(EHA) should be classified for facilities which use lighter-than-air gases such as city gas, hydrogen and ammonia. Two view points are confronting each other: an economic piont of view that these gases are lighter than air and disperse rapidly, hence do not form EHA upon release into the atmosphere, and a safety point of view that they are also inflammable gases, hence can form EHA although the extent is limited compared to heavy gases. But various standards such as KS, IEC, API, NFPA do not exclude light gases when classifying EHA and present examples of EHA for light gas facilities. This study calculates EHA using the hypothetical volume in the IEC code where the hole sizes required for the calculation were selected according to various nominal pipe sizes in such a way to conform to the EHA data in the API code and HSL. Then, 25 leakage scenarios were suggested for 5 different pipe sizes and 5 operating pressures that cover typical operating conditions of light gas facilities. The EHA for the minimum leakage scenario(25 mm pipe, 0.01MPa pressure) was found to correspond to a hypothetical volume larger than 0.1 $m^3$(medium-level ventilation). This confirms the validity of classifying EHA for facilities using lighter-than-air gases. Finally, a computer program called HACPL was developed for easy use by light gas facilities that classifies EHA according to operating pressures and pipe sizes.

The paper concerns the description of the step by step development process of the new fixed blade runner called "Mixer" suitable for the uprating of the Francis turbines units installed at the older low head hydropower plants. In the paper the details of hydraulic and mechanical design are presented. Since the rotational speed of the new runner is significantly higher then the rotational speed of the original Francis one, the direct coupling of the turbine to the generator can be applied. The maximum efficiency at prescribed operational point was reached by the geometry optimization of two most important components. In the first step the optimization of the draft tube geometry was carried out. The condition for the draft tube geometry optimization was to design the new geometry of the draft tube within the original bad draft tube shape without any extensive civil works. The runner blade geometry optimization was carried out on the runner coupled with the draft tube domain. The blade geometry of the runner was optimized using automatic direct search optimization procedure. The method used for the objective function minimum search is a kind of the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The objective function concerns efficiency, required net head and cavitation features. After successful hydraulic design the modal and stress analysis was carried out on the prototype scale runner. The static pressure distribution from flow simulation was used as a load condition. The modal analysis in air and in water was carried out and the results were compared. The final runner was manufactured in model scale and it is going to be tested in hydraulic laboratory. Since the turbine with the fixed blade runner does not allow double regulation like in case of full Kaplan turbine, it can be profitably used mainly at power plants with smaller changes of operational conditions or in case with more units installed. The advantages are simple manufacturing, installation and therefore lower expenses and short delivery time for turbine uprating.
Silicon carbide (SiC) thin films become superhard when they have microstructures of nanocolumnar crystalline grains (NCCG) with an intergranular amorphous SiC matrix. We investigated the role of ion bombardment and deposition temperature in forming the NCCG in SiC thin films. A direct-current (DC) unbalanced magnetron sputtering method was used with pure Ar as sputtering gas to deposit the SiC thin films at fixed target power of 200 W and chamber pressure of 0.4 Pa. The Ar ion bombardment of the deposited films was conducted by applying a negative DC bias voltage 0-100 V to the substrate during deposition. The deposition temperature was varied between room temperature and $450^{\circ}C$. Above a critical bias voltage of -80 V, the NCCG formed, whereas, below it, the SiC films were amorphous. Additionally, a minimum thermal energy (corresponding to a deposition temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ in this study) was required for the NCCG formation. Transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and glancing angle X-ray diffraction analysis (GAXRD) were conducted to probe the samples' structural characteristics. Of those methods, Raman spectroscopy was a particularly efficient non-destructive tool to analyze the formation of the SiC NCCG in the film, whereas GAXRD was insufficiently sensitive.

The objective of this research is to understand the characteristics of a nonpremixed, turbulent, hydrogen jet flame which is stabilized in Mach 1.8 coflowing air flows. In order to investigate the flame structure, flame lengths and fuel trajectories were measured by using direct photography, acetone PLIF, Mie scattering techniques, and numerical simulation. Effect of increasing air velocity was investigated when fuel velocity is fixed. The subsonic flame length was decreased drastically, however the supersonic flame length was increased slowly Then the change of flame blow out characteristics was observed as varying fuel nozzle lip thickness. The flame stability can be increased when fuel nozzle lip thickness was increased, which indicates that the minimum fuel lip thickness ratio is required for the stable supersonic flames. Also, it is found that fuel jet is blocked by high pressure zone and low scattering zone is made. Then the fuel that was moving along the recirculation zone had longer residence time within the supersonic flames, which made partially premixed zone.
Torque tubes in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) motor transfer torque from superconducting field winding rotor to the room temperature shaft. It should have minimum heat conduction property for minimizing the load on cryo-refrigerator. Generally, these torque tubes are made with stainless steel material because of high strength, very low outgassing and low thermal contraction properties at cryogenic temperatures and vacuum conditions. With recent developments in composite materials, these torque tubes could be made of composites such as Kevlar and S-Glass, which have the required properties like high strength and low thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperatures, but with a reduced weight. Development and testing of torque tubes made of these composites for HTS motor are taken up at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Hyderabad in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastics and Engineering Technology (CIPET), Chennai and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. As these materials are subjected to vacuum, it is important to measure their outgassing rates under vacuum conditions before manufacturing prototype torque tubes. The present study focusses on the outgassing characteristics of Kevlar and S-Glass, using an Outgassing Measurement System (OMS), developed at IIT Kharagpur. The OMS facility works under vacuum environment, in which the test samples are exposed to vacuum conditions over a sufficient period of time. The outgassing measurements for the composite samples were obtained using pressure-rise technique. These studies are useful to quantify the outgassing rate of composite materials under vacuum conditions and to suggest them for manufacturing composite torque tubes used in HTS motors.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the Wii Balance Board (WBB)-based jump performance for the elderly and to confirm the difference in jump performance according to age. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: 40 young adults (aged 22.5±2.2 years) and 33 elderly (aged 75.1±5.2 years) without orthopedics disease participated in this study. Standing on the WBB then, with the signal "start," jump vertically to the maximum height at which you can jump, land on the force plate after jump and keep it standing on both feet. All subjects were required to practice the jump sufficiently before starting the measurement, each measuring three times, and the mean values were used. A one-minute break was provided between each trial. Evaluators waited within 1meter for every test to prepare for fall. Results: The vertical ground reaction force of elderly and young adults when jumping using WBB showed a significant difference (p<0.05) and demonstrated discriminant validity. Between two groups, there were significant differences in overall jump time (p<0.05), maximum value (p<0.05), minimum value (p<0.05), center of pressure (COP) pathlength (p<0.05), and flight time p<0.05). Conclusions: This study found that performing the vertical jump, the elderly showed longer jump time, lower vertical ground reaction force, COP pathlength and shorter flight phase than healthy young adults using WBB and demonstrated that as a measurement tool, WBB discriminated vertical jump performance between elderly and young adults.
Underground environmental infrastructure and energy production facilities, which are recognized as avoidable facilities such as landfills, are emerging as an important social issue due to urbanization and economic growth. In order to safely construct a large-scale plant facility in the underground space, it is necessary to increase the utilization of the limited space layout and minimize unnecessary columns. In this study, the plant modularization method(Pipe Rack Module) was reviewed to solve the problems of work constraints, assembly and demolition, process system interconnection, and maintenance that occur when plant facilities are underground. In addition, plant module analysis was performed by applying various load conditions (earthquake load, device load, earth pressure load, etc.) to improve spatial layout usability and secure structure stability. Based on the analysis results under various boundary condition, the implications regarding the minimum installation interval and module arrangement (draft) of basic modules required for the construction of an underground combined plant were derived.
With the world's fast expanding energy usage comes a slew of new issues. Because one-third of energy is lost in overcoming friction, tremendous effort is being directed into minimizing friction. Surface texturing is the latest surface treatment technology that uses grooves and dimples on the friction surface of the machine to significantly reduce friction and improve wear resistance. Despite the fact that many studies on this issue have been conducted, most of them focused on parallel surfaces, with relatively few cases of converging films, as in most sliding bearings. This study investigated the lubrication performance of surface-textured inclined slider bearings. We analyzed the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The results show the pressure and velocity distributions and the lubrication performance according to the number and orientation of rectangular dimples. Partial texturing somewhat improves the lubrication performance of inclined slider bearings. The number of dimples with the maximum load-carrying capacity (LCC) and minimum friction is determined. When the major axis of the dimple is arranged in the sliding direction, the LCC and friction reduction are maximized. However, full texturing significantly reduces the LCC of the slider bearing and increases the flow rate. The results have the potential to improve the lubrication performance of various sliding bearings, but further research is required.

Backgrounds/Aims: Proximal splenorenal shunt (PSRS) is a commonly performed procedure to decompress portal hypertension, in patients with refractory variceal bleed, especially in non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH). If conventional methods are hindered by any technical or pathological factors, alternative surgical techniques may be required. This study analyzes the effectiveness of various unconventional shunt surgeries performed for NCPH. Methods: A retrospective analysis of NCPH patients who underwent unconventional shunt surgeries during the period July 2011 to June 2022 was conducted. All patients were followed up for a minimum of 12 months with doppler study of the shunt to assess shunt patency, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to evaluate the regression of varices. Results: During the study period, 130 patients underwent shunt surgery; among these, 31 underwent unconventional shunts (splenoadrenal shunt [SAS], 12; interposition mesocaval shunt [iMCS], 8; interposition PSRS [iPSRS], 6; jejunal vein-cava shunt [JCS], 3; left gastroepiploic-renal shunt [LGERS], 2). The main indications for unconventional shunts were left renal vein aberration (SAS, 8/12), splenic vein narrowing (iMCS, 5/8), portalhypertensive vascular changes (iPSRS, 6/6), and portomesenteric thrombosis (JCS, 3/3). The median fall in portal pressure was more in SAS (12.1 mm Hg), and operative time more in JCS, 8.4 hours (range, 5-9 hours). During a median follow-up of 36 months (6-54 months), shunt thrombosis had been reported in all cases of LGERS, and less in SAS (3/12). Variceal regression rate was high in SAS, and least in LGERS. Hypersplenism had reversed in all patients, and 6/31 patients had a recurrent bleed. Conclusions: Unconventional shunt surgery is effective in patients unsuited for other shunts, especially PSRS, and it achieves the desired effects in a significant proportion of patients.
A leak of fuel gas in partially confined area creates a flammable atmosphere and give rise to an explosion, which is one of the most common accident in domestic. Observations from accident in domestic suggest that some explosions are caused by a quantify of fuel significantly less than lower explosion limit(LEL) amount required to fill the room, which is attributed to inhomogeneous mixing of leaked gas. The minimum amount of leaked gas for explosion is highly dependent on the mixing degree in the area. For lighter gas, such as methane, a high concentration tends to build up in the space from ceiling of room. But heavy gas, such as propane, a high concentration tends to build up in the space from bottom of room. This paper presents a method for analysing the explosion hazard in a room with very small amount of leaked gas. Based on explosion limit concentration, the gaussian distribution model is used to estimate the minimum amount of leak which yields a specified explosion pressure. The results demonstrate that catastrophic structural damage can be achieved with a volume of fuel gas which is less than 0.5 percent of the total enclosed volume in domestic. The method will help analyzing hazard to develop new safe device as well as investigating accident.
