Computational Optimization for RC Columns in Tall Buildings (초고층 철근콘크리트 기둥의 전산최적설계 프로세스)

  • This research develops tools and strategies for optimizing RC column sections applied in tall buildings. Optimization parameters are concrete strength and section shape, the objective function for which is subject to several predefined constraints drawn from the original structural design. For this purpose, we developed new components for StrAuto, a parametric modeling and optimization tool for building structure. The components receive from external analysis solvers member strengths calculated from the original design model, and output optimized column sections satisfying the minimum cost. Using these components, optimized sections are firstly obtained for each predefined concrete strength applied to the whole floors in the project building. The obtained results for each concrete strength are comparatively examined to determine the fittest sections which will also result in the fittest vertical zoning for concrete strength. The main optimization scenario for this is to search for the vertical levels where the identical optimized sections coincide for the two different concrete strengths in concern, and select those levels for the boundaries where a concrete strength will be changed to another. The optimization process provided in this research is a product of an intensive development designed for a specific member in a specific project. Thus, the algorithm suggested takes on a microscopic and mathematical approach. However, the technique has a lot of potential that it can further be extensively developed and applied for future projects.

  • In this paper, the basic design of the electric hydraulic sliding deck system was developed to develop the electric hydraulic sliding deck which can easily upgrade the loading and unloading of the agricultural machinery by modifying the load of the existing 5ton cargo truck. Through the kinematic analysis, The length and structure of the specimens were designed and the materials were selected for safety and economical efficiency through structural analysis. For the basic design of the sliding deck system, we surveyed the agricultural machinery to be transported and selected necessary elements. And have devised a system using a hydraulic cylinder that can meet selected factors. Through the simplified modeling and kinematic diagram, the operating structure of the sliding deck system was grasped and the minimum length and structure of the sliding deck were devised, In order to select the sliding deck material satisfying, four representative materials used in the automobile structure were selected. Selected the parts to be analyzed and compared the stresses and deformation amounts according to the material under the conditions of maximum load through simplified modeling. As a result, SS41P material was used to reduce the unit cost and to achieve safety. The winch system was designed and applied for moving up and down of the farm machinery which can not be operated.

The Selection of Optimal Interchange Types by Quantifying the User Costs and Construction Costs of Ramps (연결로의 사용자 비용과 공사비 계량화를 통한 입체교차로 최적형식 선정 기법)

  • It is stated in the highway geometric design guide that expressway interchange types should be selected considering a set of input variables including travel demand, topography, construction cost and interchange spacing. However, this selection method has a problem of providing different interchange types even for the same input variables depending upon different applications of engineers discretion. A procedure that produces consistent results is necessary and this paper presents the development of an efficient and reliable procedure based on the quantification of road user costs and construction costs on interchanges. To develop this procedure, a survey of existing expressway interchange types in South Korea was made and 10 basic interchange types and 52 supplementary interchange types were identified. To relate road user costs and construction costs to these interchange types, this research uses two method. First, interchange types were expressed by a set of ramp configurations. Second, road user benefits and construction costs associated with these different interchange types were formulated based on the current national guide of the expressway economical analysis. As a result, it was proved that an interchange type to provide minimum costs could be selected consistently and this research result should be useful for future expressway geometric designs.

A Study on Virtual Environment Platform for Autonomous Tower Crane (타워크레인 자율화를 위한 가상환경 플랫폼 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Autonomous equipment requires a large amount of data from various environments. However, it takes a lot of time and cost for an experiment in a real construction sites, which are difficulties in data collection and processing. Therefore, this study aims to develop a virtual environment for autonomous tower cranes technology development and validation. The authors defined automation functions and operation conditions of tower cranes with three performance criteria: operational design domain, object and event detection and response, and minimum functional conditions. Afterward, this study developed a virtual environment for learning and validation for autonomous functions such as recognition, decision making, and control using the Unity game engine. Validation was conducted by construction industry experts with a fidelity which is the representative matrix for virtual environment assessment. Through the virtual environment platform developed in this study, it will be possible to reduce the cost and time for data collection and technology development. Also, it is also expected to contribute to autonomous driving for not only tower cranes but also other construction equipment.

Determination of Grades and Design Strengths of Machine Graded Lumber in Korea (국내 기계등급구조재의 등급구분체계 및 기준설계값 결정방법 연구)

  • Based on comparative studies on standards and grading procedures of machine graded lumber in Korea and other countries, this study proposed a procedure of determining the grade classification and design strengths of domestic machine graded lumber. Differences between machine stress rated lumber and E-rated laminations were detailed in order to clarify the need for the procedure improvement. To this improvement the use of average MOE requirement for grading was introduced instead of the fixed minimum MOE requirement which is currently used in the Korean standards. It was found that the fixed minimum MOE requirement method was easier for an inspector to grade but, less efficient as a strength predictor than the average MOE requirement method. The advantage of average MOE requirement method is statistically MOR-MOE regression-based MOR prediction and highly efficient in quality control though it requires a computer-aided operation system in an initial setup. A major weakness of the current Korean grading system was found that different strength characteristics depending on wood species were not reflected on the grade classification and the tabulated allowable design stress. The proposed procedures were developed taking advantages of respective merits of both methods and based on MOR-MOE regression analysis. Through this procedure, the grades of machine stress rated lumber should be revised to become interchangeable with E-rated lamination, which would be beneficial to the cost competitiveness of domestic machine graded lumber and glued laminated timber industry.

Hardware Approach to Fuzzy Inference―ASIC and RISC―

  • This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost. A Change of Peak Outflows due to Decision of Flow Path in Storm Sewer Network (우수관망 노선 결정에 따른 첨두유출량 변화 분석)

  • In the previous researches for storm sewer design, the flow paths in overall network were determined to minimize the construction cost and then, it was not considered the superposition effect of runoff hydrographs in the sewer pipes. However, in this research, the flow paths are determined considering the superposition effect to reduce the inundation risk by controlling and distributing the flows in the sewer pipes. This is accomplished by distributing the inflows that enter into each junction by changing the flow path in which pipes are connected between junctions. In this paper, the superposition effect and peak outflows at outlet were analyzed considering the changes of the flow paths in the sewer network. Then, the flow paths are determined using genetic algorithm and the objective function is to minimize the peak outflow at outlet. As the applied result for the sample sewer network, the difference between maximum and minimum peak outflows which are caused by the change of flow path was about 5.6% for the design rainfall event of 10 years frequency with 30 min. duration. Also, the typhoon 'Rusa' which occurred at 2002 was applied to verify the reduction of inundation risk for the excessive rainfall, and then, the amount of overflows was reduced to about 31%.

A Study on The RFID/WSN Integrated system for Ubiquitous Computing Environment (유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅 환경을 위한 RFID/WSN 통합 관리 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The most critical technology to implement ubiquitous health care is Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) technology which makes use of various sensor technologies, processor integration technology, and wireless network technology-Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)-to easily gather and monitor actual physical environment information from a remote site. With the feature, the USN technology can make the information technology of the existing virtual space expanded to actual environments. However, although the RFID and the WSN have technical similarities and mutual effects, they have been recognized to be studied separately, and sufficient studies have not been conducted on the technical integration of the RFID and the WSN. Therefore, EPCglobal which realized the issue proposed the EPC Sensor Network to efficiently integrate and interoperate the RFID and WSN technologies based on the international standard EPCglobal network. The proposed EPC Sensor Network technology uses the Complex Event Processing method in the middleware to integrate data occurring through the RFID and the WSN in a single environment and to interoperate the events based on the EPCglobal network. However, as the EPC Sensor Network technology continuously performs its operation even in the case that the minimum conditions are not to be met to find complex events in the middleware, its operation cost rises. Moreover, since the technology is based on the EPCglobal network, it can neither perform its operation only for the sake of sensor data, nor connect or interoperate with each information system in which the most important information in the ubiquitous computing environment is saved. Therefore, to address the problems of the existing system, we proposed the design and implementation of USN integration management system. For this, we first proposed an integration system that manages RFID and WSN data based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Secondly, we defined the minimum conditions of the complex events to detect unnecessary complex events in the middleware, and proposed an algorithm that can extract complex events only when the minimum conditions are to be met. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods we implemented SIP-based integration management system.

Ductility Evaluation of Circular Hollow Reinforced Concrete Columns with Internal Steel Tube (강관 보강 중공 R.C 기둥의 연성 평가 해석)

  • In locations where the cost of concrete is relatively high or in situations where the weight of concrete members has to be kept to a minimum, it may be more economical to use hollow reinforced concrete vertic al members. Hollow reinforced concrete colun-ms with a low axial load, a moderate longitudinal steel percentage and a reasonably thick wall were found to perform in a ductile manner at the flexural strength, similar to solid columns. Hollow reinforced concrete columns with a high axial load, a high longitudinal steel percentage, and a thin wall were found, however, to behave in a brittle manner at the flexural strength, since the neutral axis is forced to occur away from the inside face of the tube towards the section centroid and, as a result, crushing of concrete occurs near the unconfined inside face of the section. If, however, a steel tube is placed near the inside face of a circular hollow column, the column can be expected not to fail in a brittle manner through the disintegration of the concrete in the compression zone. A design recommendation and example through the moment-curvature analysis program for curvature ductility are herein presented. A theoretical moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted, providing that the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. In this paper, a unified stress-stain model for confined concrete by Mander is developed foi members with circular sections.

Data Congestion Control Using Drones in Clustered Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network (클러스터된 이기종 무선 센서 네트워크에서의 드론을 이용한 데이터 혼잡 제어)

  • The clustered heterogeneous wireless sensor network is comprised of sensor nodes and cluster heads, which are hierarchically organized for different objectives. In the network, we should especially take care of managing node resources to enhance network performance based on memory and battery capacity constraints. For instances, if some interesting events occur frequently in the vicinity of particular sensor nodes, those nodes might receive massive amounts of data. Data congestion can happen due to a memory bottleneck or link disconnection at cluster heads because the remaining memory space is filled with those data. In this paper, we utilize drones as mobile sinks to resolve data congestion and model the network, sensor nodes, and cluster heads. We also design a cost function and a congestion indicator to calculate the degree of congestion. Then we propose a data congestion map index and a data congestion mapping scheme to deploy drones at optimal points. Using control variable, we explore the relationship between the degree of congestion and the number of drones to be deployed, as well as the number of drones that must be below a certain degree of congestion and within communication range. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm outperforms previous work by a minimum of 20% in terms of memory overflow.
