Mixed acidophilic bacteria were approached for leaching of cobalt and lithium from wastes of lithium ion battery industries. The growth substrates for the mixed mesophilic bacteria are elemental sulfur and ferrous ion. Bioleaching of the metal was due to the protonic action of sulfate ion on the metals present in the waste. It was investigated that bioleaching of cobalt was faster than lithium. Bacterial action could leach out about 80 % of cobalt and 20 % of lithium from the solid wastes within 12 days of the experimental period. Higher solid/liquid ratio was found to be detrimental for bacterial growth due to the toxic nature of the metals. At high elemental sulfur concentration, the sulfur powder was observed to be in undissolved form and hence the leaching rate also decreased with increase of sulfur amount.
The synthesis of polyphase waste form, which is an immobilization matrix fur the high level radioactive wastes, was performed with the mixed composition of garnet and spinel $(Gd_3Fe_5O_{12}+(Ni_xMn_{1-x})(Fe_yCr_{1-y})_2O_4)$ in the range of 1200 to $1400^{\circ}C$. The phases synthesized from all stoichiometric compositions were garnet, perovskite, and spinel. Especially, garnet was synthesized only in the composition of the highest content of Fe(y=0.9), whereas it was not synthesized in other compositions. This result indicated that the content of Fe was closely related to the formation of garnet. The composition of garnet revealed that the content of Gd was exceeded and that of Fe was depleted. Preferential distribution of elements in the phases can be attributed to the nonstoichiometric composition of garnet.
This study investigated the effects of water-soluble calcium supplements manufactured with eggshells and oyster shells on growing rats. The aim was to review the potential use of food wastes as materials for water-soluble calcium supplements as compared to water-soluble calcium supplements made from imported seaweed powder. When experimental animals were administered three types of water-soluble calcium supplements orally for six weeks, the serum calcium level of the seaweed calcium supplement group were significantly higher than that of eggshell or oyster shell-derived calcium, but blood alkali phosphatase activity, osteocalcin and urine crosslink levels were not different in the three types of calcium supplements. Bone mineral density and bone mineral content in spine, femur and tibia also were not significantly different among the groups. However, when considering body weight of each group, bone mineral density and bone mineral content of the femur were significantly higher in the oyster shell calcium supplement group. These results suggest that at least on a short-term basis, the effect of calcium supplements prepared from eggshell and oyster shell are similar to the effects of seaweed calcium supplements.
Spent catalysts containing platinum were generated in petroleum refinery and other chemical industries. The reclamation of precious metals from such wastes has long been attempted in view of their rare, expensive and indispensable nature. In this study, the recovery of platinum from petroleum catalysts was attempted by a method consisting mainly of dissolving alumina substrate with sulfuric acid thereby concentrating insoluble platinum. Also, platinum dissolved partially in sulfuric acid was recovered by a cementation method using aluminum metal as a reductive agent. The effect of temperature, time, concentration of sulfuric acid. and pulp density on the dissolution of substrate was investigated. When the substrate of platinum catalyst was ${\gamma}$-AI$_2$O$_3$ about 95% alumina was dissolved in 6.0M sulfuric acid at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. When the substrate was the mixture of ${\gamma}$-A1$_2$O$_3$and $\alpha$-A1$_2$O$_3$about 92% was dissolved after 4 hours. As a result, more than 99% of platinum could be recovered by this method and aluminum sulfate was obtained as byproduct.
Accelerated carbonation is a technique that can be used as a CCS technology for $CO_2$ sequestration of approximately 5~20% in a stable solid through the precipitation of carbonate. An alkaline inorganic waste material such as ash, slag, and cement paste are generated from incinerators, accelerated carbonation offers the advantage of lower transport and processing costs at the same generation location of waste and $CO_2$. In this study, we evaluated an amount of $CO_2$ sequestration in various types of inorganic alkaline waste processed by means of accelerated carbonation. A quantitative evaluation of $CO_2$ real sequestration based on a TG/DTA analysis, the maximum 118.88 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in paper sludge fly ash, the maximum 134.46 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash, the maximum 9.72 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in industrial solid waste incinerator fly ash, and the maximum $18.19g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in waste cement paste.
Different toxic wastes are disposed of in our surroundings and these will ultimately threaten the existence of living organisms. Biohydrometallurgy, which includes the processes of bioleaching and bioremediation through the activities of microorganisms such as bacterial or fungal species, is a technology that has the potential to overcome many environmental problems at a reasonable economic cost. Bioleaching were carried out for dissolution of metals from different materials using most important metal mobilizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Laptospirillum ferrooxidans. According to the reaction, bioleaching is parted as direct and indirect mechanism. In direct mechanism the bacteria oxidize the sulphides minerals by accepting electron and producing sulphuric acid in leaching media for their growth and metabolism. In other hand the indirect bioleaching is demonstrated as the oxidation of sulphides mineral by the oxidant like $Fe^{3+}$ produced by the iron oxidizing bacteria. Through this process, substantial amount of metal can be recovered from low-grade ores, concentrates, industrial wastes like sludge, tailings, fly ash, slag, electronic scrap, spent batteries and spent catalysts. This may be alternative technology to solve the high deposition of waste, which moves toward a healthy environment and green world.

In this study, the location conditions and optimal technologies required for creating urban municipalities that can utilize the space in an abandoned mine area, where there is no infrastructure related to recycling wastes and valuable metals, are investigated. The urban mining industry deals with mineral resources through the processing of high value-added industrial by-products and wastes, and it is a useful linkage industry for the development of mineral resources and prevention of mining hazards. Urban mining technologies targeted at the abandoned mine area constitute screening, extraction, and smelting for recycling waste products. By analyzing the technologies available, an industrial network can be developed for recycling waste batteries and catalysts, which are promising raw materials. It is also important to establish an appropriate location for related industries that can generate value-added resources, rather than the resource supply and demand conditions seen in general urban mines. In order to overcome the accessibility and infrastructure limitations, the economic foundation of the abandoned mine area should consider the linkage of raw material supply, key technologies for recycling useful mineral resources that are derived from urban mines, spatial and site conditions, and industrial characteristics.

Annually a greate many of mineral demolition wastes consisting mainly of concrete and bricks, is produced in Korea. Waste concrete present a significant potential as construction material. Therefor a series of test was peformed on waste concrete to evaluate adsorption for Cu and Pb.
Along with the expansion of industrial activities, the quantity of industrial waste sludge is increasing, and the treatment/disposal of wastes is a social problem regarding the preservation of the environment. In particular, recycling the sludge as a raw material is actively required considering the situation of Korea, which is poor in natural resources and energy. Lime is a necessity for treatment of waste sludge, which often can be made recyclable by lime treatment. In this thesis, a brief description has been given of my views on the ordinary treatment of waste sludge and the effective use of inorganic industrial waste sludge focusing on lime.

Large earthquakes with (MW > ~ 6) result in ground shaking, surface ruptures, and permanent deformation with displacement. The earthquakes would damage important facilities and infrastructure such as large industrial establishments, nuclear power plants, and waste disposal sites. In particular, earthquake ruptures associated with large earthquakes can affect geological and engineered barriers such as deep geological repositories that are used for storing hazardous radioactive wastes. Earthquake-driven faults and surface ruptures exhibit various fault zone structural characteristics such as direction of earthquake propagation and rupture and asymmetric displacement patterns. Therefore, estimating the respect distances and hazardous areas has been challenging. We propose that considering multiple parameters, such as fault types, distribution, scale, activity, linkage patterns, damage zones, and respect distances, enable accurate identification of the sites for deep geological repositories and important facilities. This information would enable earthquake hazard assessment and lower earthquake-resulted hazards in potential earthquake-prone areas.
