The purpose of this study is to figure out current situation of safety education to improve safety awareness and practice in Korean school students. In order to do this, it is necessary to identify the current level of safety awareness and practice with the actual status of accident occurrence. Furthermore it is try to figure out the most influencing factors on the safety education for Korean middle and high school students. The 412 students were taken from a random sample. The samples were one class of 2nd grade students in five different middle schools and four different high schools in Seoul, Korea. The survey was conducted from 29 September 2010 through 15 October 2010. An additional samples for the questionnaires posted in web were collected. The 305 respondents from school students and 80 respondents from web survey were used to analyze for this study out of 800 respondents. SPSS was used to analyze the questionnaires. The overall safety-awareness score was relatively high at 4.56/5 for fire safety and 4.32/5 for traffic safety. Safety awareness was higher for girls than boys and also for high school students than middle school students. Safety education by parents at home gives a good impact on high safety practices. Safety awareness was improved by feeling of necessity for safety training. The safety prevention training provided during the class by teacher and home training by parents improved safety practice. The correct direction of safety education for younger students can be easier in future.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The current South Korean government policy on food irradiation technology should be reformed based on an in-depth investigation of the communications aspect, because the issue is no longer of a technological nature, given the proven safety and efficacy of the processes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The target population of the education program consisted of elementary, middle, and high school students attending 310 schools in South Korea (2013: 63 schools, 2014: 104 schools, 2015: 143 schools). Data subjected to analysis were 13,327 pre-education and 12,641 post-education questionnaires received from 7,582 elementary, 2,671 middle, and 3,249 high school students who participated in the education program from May 2012 to April 2015 (n = 12,831), after the exclusion of inadequately filled-in questionnaires. RESULTS: Analysis of the three-year educational effect trend was conducted by comparing levels of variables before and after food radiation education. The analysis yielded the finding that the post-education levels were significantly higher for all variables. That is, for interest in education, perception (necessity, safety, subjective knowledge, and information acquisition), objective knowledge, and attitude, with the sole exception of objective knowledge in 2013. CONCLUSIONS: Given that post-education levels of perception, knowledge, and attitude concerning irradiated foods increased considerably compared to pre-education levels, behavior change should be induced by providing continuous education to enhance, these primary variables.

The self-administered mailing survey was conducted to collect the available health education topics in the preliminary study, to identify the factor structure of the health education topics and to analyze the conceptual properties on health education with exploratory factor analysis and multidimensional scaling analysis in SPSS 12.0. Results: A total of 21 health education topics were collected from the preliminary survey and 31 topics were, comprehensively, generated for the main survey. In exploratory factor analysis, seven factors were generated in 1.0 or greater Eigen value standard. The seven factors were 'life health promotion,' 'disease prevention and drug control,' 'bulling and aggression prevention,' 'injury and sexual harassment prevention,' human-efficacy and regulation,' 'health protection for adolescence,' and 'alcohol and tobacco control.' The educational need scores were the highest in 'human-efficacy and regulation' and 'injury and sexual harassment prevention.' The two-dimensional cooperates were generated for the 31 health education topics and the two dimensional properties which divided the conceptual space were 'health-safety' for one and 'public/environmental-individual/personal' for the other. That is, middle school principals and teachers primarily, understand the health education curriculum in the sense of 'health vs. safety' and 'public/environmental vs individual/personal.' Conclusions: Health education curriculum and textbook should be developed based on teachers' needs and conditions for health education in school fields. These days the trend of special education is changing from special school-based education to special class room based education, and from separated education to integrated education. In accordance with this change, special classes should be planned for multi purposes so that the class room can be used for the place of teaching and learning, guidance, job education. This research surveyed the special teachers working for 937 schools which have special classes(elementary 631, middle 217 high school 89).
